Jerry have you spoken with a Walter McGowan?
Only I found this:

ref my last post. The wing bombs. To carry 250 lb. Bombs.
I designed the carriers, a nasty design problem. I solved it and got a raise for doing so.
Great to read that they were put to good use.
Walter.

I worked on the P9 the first prototype in the Experiment shop, 1938. I was an apprentice. After a flight I was with the ground crew after a flight. It was a cold wind blowing, “high ups” and the cold ground crew drifted off for shelter.
I was told to stay with the plane.
I was alone and so climbed into the cockpit for warmth.
Picture an 18 year old youth in charge of a secret fighter.
Imagine that today.
Later I was promoted to the design department and worked on the installation of 2 Merlin in the production version.
This was not to order yet, so the funding was Westlands.
At that time the firm was taken over by John Browns the ship building people. They refused to finance the project.
So we stopped the design.
What a mistake. Initially the guns were drum fed, limited the firing time but later had belt feed.
They sure made quick work of trains and enemy road convoys.
I have a model where I can see it each day.
Here:
Mike…
Picked up the items yesterday, will get them off to you asap… 😉
Stu…
Well, untill anything else turns up we have this and there’s Rocketeers Whirly windscreen for hands on measurements…;)
The chap who was supposed to make our project P9 Whirly cockpit was going to make the virtual cockpit using just these documents, then check them against the pilots notes images by placing a ‘virtual’ camera in the same position as the ‘real’ camera with a lens of the same focal length…
Can’t that be done for this project?
Remember that Fred told me the drawings Mike Keep made with his help were the most accurate to date. But that it was found by Fred after their completion and subsequent print to be flawed still in a certain part of the main fuselage/cockpit framing…
I made a drawing at the time showing the area in question, will post it.
I must admitt, amongst the whirlwind pilots I spoke to, two said it was a b***** dangerous aircraft to fly and they were glad when they had stopped flying them.
B***** dangerous… 😀
Hi Jerry
Can you tell us why they thought it B***** Dangerous… 😉
Stu…
I thought I had changed that last night…
Now I find I’m unable to do so myself, would a passing mod do so for me please?
I’ve met Capt Brown a couple of times and he’s a fantastic guy!
Just a quick note and I hope you don’t mind me asking – but do you think the title could be changed to ‘Interview with…’? Only reason is that the current title looks like it could be a link to an obituary.
Said and done… 😉
