Hmmm… Nice to see they’ve managed to keep it nice and clean for its 60 odd years and yet still kept the blood looking like its only been on the thing for a week…

    Absolute rubbish…

Unfortunately the late Peter Foote did not make his usual comprehansive report of the dig. There are some useful photos, showing a supercharger and structure from one of the nacelles, a rebuild might be pushing it!

Thank you for posting us the images from the dig Ian, which Peregrine does the photo show, the first or second? Did I dream it, or did one find it’s way to Rolls-Royce Derby… 😉

Got any of them cleaned you could show please…

That’s a wonderful piece of work, your very lucky to have found someone so skilled… Beautiful, do you think the better of the two Peregrines Steve Vizard found would be able to be stripped and documented in that way to produce a working replica…

This report says that one of the Peregrines found was in ‘superb condition’ 30 years is along time to have an engine, plenty of time for a wealthy, resourceful chap to be able to perhaps build a new Peregrine… 😉

I believe Dave Gibbings (judwin) has taken on Fred’s role at Westlands.!

Oh, thanks WF will need to speak with him in the new year. On another point just ordered my copies of the Whirly repair manuals from the RAFM and enquired how much they had on the Whirly – 1012 items listed… 🙂

Fred did say that there were some microfiche that had Whirlwind data, but Westlands would not pay for it to be converted to digital at the time. Where is that now and wonder if it’s not long gone past it’s shelve life…

When I had talked to Fred Ballam, now sadly no longer with us, he said that a great many engineering files had been placed in a skip and simply dumped! there must be someone out there, who rescued something……surely

Frightning… Reading that puts a shiver down my spine, but you can imagine the why, need some space in the archive, have a look see what you can get rid of, all those Whirlwind drawings can go, don’t think we will need them again…

All thats left now is/or was, kept in a crumpled cardboard box… 🙁

Fred did say to me last summer though he had kept all the ‘Stress’ drawings (Fred told me he had worked in the Wind Tunnel for some time and had kept safe some of the stuff that was left there…) that might be useful to us… How I wish now I had got off my butt and gone down to Yeovil to get copies, I hope they are still safe…

I know it sounds tight, but who is in charge of the Archives now, does anyone know?

Perhaps we should put a letter in the local rag asking for anyone with Whirlwind material to contact us…

Isn’t it about time to pool the information we have collected in the one place and see what we have to play with? Perhaps then we might find enough to back engineer a 1/4 scale or better replica…

For instance would it be possible using these few images, the repair and parts manual and some decent photo’s to recreate a good facsimile of our beloved Whirlys tail plane in AutoCAD and then to reconstruct a full size tail plane in real life from scaled up measurements, using the virtual model as the template…?

Didn’t Mr Vizzard loan one to Rolls-Royce Derby?

I had the pleasure of seeing Fred at Westlands 6 years ago, where he helped us kick start our Whirlwind project. A softly spoken man, one you could not fail to like from the very start…

Very sad he has left us, God speed you Fred on your journey.

    Stuart.

Does anybody have access to a copy of ‘Peregrine Aero Engine – Air Publication 1761A’?

PM me your email CD, I think I can help…

Have we found the name of the Camp Commander that had the Peregrines taken out for his speedboat yet? Would the aircraft have been struck off charge, if so what documentation would have had to be filled in if any? Who would have taken them out, the camps technicians?

So often information hard gained never see’s the light of day, one can only hope someone will see this thread and that it might lead to new information about the whereabouts…

Oh that reminds me, where would you go to get my Whirly replica ‘Operational Limitations Plate’ made up for real…

We’ve up dated it from this image, lost the “C’s”…

Interestingly I’ve just finished reading a first hand account of that very raid, from Major General Walter Dornberger of Peenemunde V2…

    Hi
    personal theory only,
But my bet for a holy grail would be the florida area.
P6994 went to a scrappie there and the peregrines went into a speedboat, after the USN finished with it.

    Jerry…

Did you find out or enquire which Base/Commander it might have been and follow up the trail from there… There’s probably an album with a picture of the boat with its proud owner showing off it’s Rolls-Royce Engines…:)
