Hi Paul, now your confusing me…

Movietone, 25 minutes of unedited footage, what happened to that then?

Also something I’ve always thought as odd, did Westlands not ever take any film of their Whirlwind, seems strange not to do so…

Jerry, did you get much responce from your letter of request for information, photo’s from the people of Yeovil?

My thanks to everyone, again very interesting reading, but then anything Whirly related is always interesting… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Sounds like a Time Team Special to me, can just see it, Summer dig, History of the Whirlwind, Fred Ballam from Westlands and Steve Vizzard from AA as the invited experts… ๐Ÿ˜€

Anyone know Tony Robinson …

    Anthony…

There’s probably alot more somewhere, but this is as much the IWM has without looking to hard… ๐Ÿ™‚

We will be interested in viewing some of the footage to see just what a Whirly can do damage wise, to make sure our’s has the same hitting power as the real thing… ๐Ÿ˜‰

    FILM NUMBER
    FILM TITLE:
[AIRBORNE EXERCISE AT TRAVELLER’S HILL, SUFFOLK] [Allocated]
    PRODUCTION DATE:
    29/3/1942
    SHORT SUMMARY:
Unedited footage of a demonstration of air to ground support to an audience of service personnel and others.
    FULL SUMMARY:
(Reel 1) Hawker Hectors of 296 Squadron tow Hotspur gliders of the Glider Exercise Unit over the battle area in good long and mid shots from the camera aircraft. A glider is shown in free flight before banking and landing. Troops emerge from the now stationary glider and run for cover (note the camera crew in the background and that the glider pilot, an RAF type is not wearing flying kit). A captured Heinkel He 111 and Messerschmitt Bf 110 fly overhead. They are both in British markings and the He 111 (serial AM177) retains its original KG26 unit badge. The scene of troops deploying is shown again taken from different angles. Some of the 8000 spectators are clearly visible in the background as is an Army stills photographer. Participating aircraft commence their demonstration of ground strafing. They include Curtiss Tomahawk Mk II’s of 2 Squadron (one flying at no more than ten feet) and Hurricanes of 32 Squadron. Gun flashes are clearly seen on one of the Hurricanes. After the German aircraft make a return visit, paratroops jump from a Whitley of 297 Squadron (see note) and land. Shots of a Boston of 88 Squadron low bombing and close ups of the targets being hit end the reel.
(Reel 2) After a flypast by a 3 Squadron Hurricane, various close ups of the targets under attack from various ordinance are seen. Thereafter the large audience is seen walking the site as the participating aircraft fly low over the assembly. A Boston Mk III, Wellington, Heinkel He 111, and Messerschmitt Bf 110 fly over towards the camera. More Hurricane attacks are filmed to be followed by a further shot of the crowds inspecting the damaged targets. 602 Squadron Spitfire Mk Vs buzz them. The German aircraft reappear followed by another display by the participating British aircraft. The reel concludes with further attacks by Hurricanes, including a cannon-armed Mk IIc of 3 Squadron.
(Reel 3) The battle area is seen from the air and in the four long shots, Hurricanes can be seen strafing the ground targets. The air to air sequences continue with views of three Bostons and a Stirling. Parachutes descend from a Whitley in the second shot. The smoke screen is clearly shown over the area. A good mid shot shows paratroops jumping from the ventral hatch of 297 Squadron Whitley Mk Vs. In the next shot the troops land. A Blenheim Mk IV of 13 Squadron lays a smoke screen at 100 feet, followed by another at higher altitude which envelopes the camera. A Westland Whirlwind (probably of 137 Squadron) makes a brief appearance as does another Boston and a Stirling of 149 Squadron. After another 32 Squadron attack on the ground targets a further glimpse of the crowds in the target area and paratroop drop are shown. Another smoke laying pass is filmed before an excellent view of a Blenheim flying low and towards the camera. Halfway along the aircraft’s siren is put into its operating position which is particularly noteworthy. Attack sequences by 3 Squadron complete the reel. (Note that the last Hurricane, a Mk IIc, is camouflaged as a night fighter).

Thanks to everyone here, I’ve now found the passage mentioning the Peregrine Battle, K9477 in Ken Wixey’s Forgotten Bombers of the Royal Air Force (ISBN 1-85409-306-1) Shame R-R has mislaid the Photo’s, mind you the new lad there did say they had nothing on the Peregrine at all when I requested the AP…

Jerry, do you know what else R-R have concerning Whirly material?

Niall, pleasure as always seeing you here, sorry I haven’t replied to your last email, will write and get you up to speed with our Whirly replica…;) It’s a ๐Ÿ˜€ & ๐Ÿ™ story…

    Many thanks again to all…

i have been trying to think ,it may have been a Wessex ,not Whirlwind ,could have been 20 years ago at one of the old RAF Henlow show,s ,they had some good Airshows at Henlow years back ,i guess i have made a fool of myself ,in future i will think more carefully before putting a posting on here

    Terry

I wouldn’t worry Terry, I do it all the time… ๐Ÿ˜‰ And it is confusing when there are two aircraft with the same name and the same manufacturer, mind you aren’t the blades of the Helicopter the same profile as the Fighter wings…?

Westlands put me on to a chap who was their historian, cannot remeber His name but he did promise me some pictures, but they never appeared.

That would be Mr Fred Ballam, he’s their Archive Consultant, Fred was an apprentice at Westlands in the War and worked on the last two Whirlwinds to leave the factory, he also spent sometime running their wind tunnel…

I have left messages requesting his help for our Whirly, but so far have been unable to speak to him in person, he does leave his home number if it’s urgent, but I don’t think he would be to pleased if I did… ๐Ÿ˜‰

Mind you he must be in his eighties now, so I don’t suppose he gets in there much now… ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Hi Jerry

    Modifications

Well, the plate looks interesting, and authentic looking to me, even if it wasnโ€™t, it would be worth the ยฃ80 for the workmanship in someone fabricating it aloneโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜‰

Where would the Mods be listed BTW?

I know that there are quite a few amendments in the copy of the Whirlwind schedule of spare parts that I have, but canโ€™t remember off hand if their listed with Mod Numbersโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll have a butchers when Iโ€™m home for you.

Have you got the album I sent you?
