Great video the cockpit sequence looks like a Spitfire? same U/C indicator and trim gauge? etc Westlands did build Spitfires perhaps they borrowed these instruments for the prototypes? The pilots notes i have show a totally different arrangement.

Right first time Graham the cockpit sequence are from a Spitfire… 😀 Sadly theres only one short film of the Whirly and it does not include any cockpit footage, I’ve used part of a Spitfire startup to create a link for the take off sequence but have had to magnify them to hide the fact that they are not Whirly ones… 😉 So the Whirly pilots notes will be different…;)

I would suspect that there are many ‘common’ instruments to both the Whirlwind and other early War aircraft. Just trying to get some decent interior shots are nearly impossible, the original photo’s taken for the official pilots notes are apparently ‘unobtainable’ which is a shame as the ones that are in the pilots notes are of very poor quality, although a magazine that shall remain nameless has used one in a review of Westlands little ‘Crikey’

There is substancial information to be had from the Repair AP’s…

I seem to remember Mr Fred Ballam saying that there were drawings left, but that they were all on microfiche and Westlands would not pay to have it copied digitally… As to what exactly is left I’m afraid I never found out. A lot of information can be gleaned from the official repair AP’s which Hendon have though… 😉

    Easy…

Dismantled by the Germans and securely packed away safe from the ravages of time in a secrete underground factory… None other than a Westland Whirlwind, complete with its two Peregrines… 😮

I think seeing WJ954 the B.2. Prototype was the biggest thrill for me, although the Javelins were a close second.

    Bit of info…

‘The B.2 prototype (WJ954) flew for the first time on the 4th of September 1953. The B.2 was a one-off prototype stressed for low-level, high-speed penetration as a target marker required by outdated RAF WW2 tactics. Shown off at Farnborough a few days later, the aircraft had two major visible changes – the nose was longer and the undercarriage was now located in big fairings underneath the wings instead of within the wing itself. This meant the wing could be a stronger structure for its low level requirements. WJ954 continued as a flying test-bed for a while but was eventually transported to Foulness in 1958 to be destroyed by having various weapons fired at it to assess the vulnerability of modern aircraft to gunfire.’

Marvellous, Southampton now has a chance to really put her self on the map… Not only for the people of Southampton, but also to the memory of the people who fought in the Second World War and to a legend of the R.A.F. The Spitfire and the pilots that flew her were the major part in the beginning of the end of Nazism in Europe…

So how do they envisage this monument to undoubtedly one of the greatest aircraft of all time…? By sticking one on its tail in the earth like a kid might stick a toy that has lost its owners interest… Ha!

    It should be like this;

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/Secudus/SpitMod01.jpg

Banking, high above the earth in polished gleaming stainless steel, with three great supports radiating out from under the fuselage, down toward three ground monuments; one for R.J.Mitchell, the second to Roll-Royce and the Merlin and the third to the Battle of Britain and the Men & Women who served…

That is a monument, one made in tribute to those that fell so long ago to keep the wolves from our door…

VX927, thats only what I’ve got around to do so far, overall it will be around the 5 minute mark.

I understand what you mean about the text, but I need to put something down for those not versed in Vulcan history – more tweaking in order will solve that… 😉

I hope to cover the whole 9 yards in the end, whether I can get that amount of footage ( Hence the three-in-one sequence) in the 5 minute mark, or will have to lenghthen it will be found out in due course!

    Thanks for the input, VX….:)

As for constructive critisism there are two points I would like to offer, firstly the roll that Roly Falk did appears to be speeded up a little, not much but enough to give you the wrong impression.
Yes I noticed that, only a tad though to keep it in sync with the sound track…

Also the transitions are too quick, there is not enough time for you to read the captions and then absorb the picture.

Well, there again they needed to be to keep with the rhythm, otherwise it would have been far to long, its not a problem that can’t be got around, just can’t think of how to achieve it yet… 😉

What is the soundtrack?, this doesn’t sound very ‘British’ to me, has more of an Irish feel which may not sit well with this very British machine.

Last of the Mohican’s… Most of the ‘British’ sound tracks I heard sounded very dour and down beat and as I didn’t want to use any modern instrumentals I chose the Promontory. It’s beautifully simple and works well with the video…

I’ve given it a go over again especially the main title sequence, which I think is more pleasing to the eye than the one before. The changes I’ve made have resulted in a altogether tighter tribute.

Still along way to go but am experimenting with different ways to put more information on the screen without it looking cluttered.

The link below will show the last update and on another note does anyone know where I can get a good ‘Cutaway’ drawing for this…

    Thanks to everyone…

Speaking of Red Flag… Was there any film footage taken? There’s alot of written info about the exploits of the Vulcan’s and Buccaneers and their crew while participating in Red Flag, especially about them foiling the Americans attempts to stop our chaps getting through…

Two that come to mind are Vulcan’s flying through the Grand Canyon and a low flying Vulcan with a couple of Bucc’s tucked neatly under its wings… Actuality or urban myth?
