Thanks for trying to help but I didn’t need that much information and the details BAZV provided seems to have identified my man despite the slight discrepancy in the names.
According to a German source this was the man that confronted Franz von Werra during his attempt to steal a plane from Hucknall and not Henry Andrew Boniface who was on Xmas leave.
Plant had been temporarily seconded to take over the Adjutant abscence and ‘Boniface’ being such an unusal name was the only ont that stuck in his mind even though he was
not present during the quetioning. Plant was with No.16 Service Training school instructing Polish pilots. Not the most desireable posting. If there is anything you can add to this incident please get in touch.

Thanks for your help. The officer you have unearthed seems to be my man, despite the slight
discrepancy, and proves he was an active RAF officer during the time of my research into the
adventures of Franz von Werra. According to a German source he was the one who fronted
down von Werra during his attempt to steal a plane at Hucknall and not Henry Andrew Boniface
who was on Xmas leave. ‘Boniface’ being such an unusual name that it was the only one he
remembered during his interogation but it was Plant that faced him down as he was acting
as temporary Adjutant having been seconded from 16 Flight Training school where he was
acting as an instructor to Polish airmen. A tiresome job.
Thanks again for being so helpful and if you come across anything on this incident please
    keep me in mind.
    All the best

THanks for that but I doubt that a farmhouse-even a very large one- could have provided accomodation for upwards of 500 airmen!

Thanks for the info. I already knew of the Me110 units taking part but I wasn’t sure of the numbers involved and you have confirmed it was 70. I had no idea that the Me109s were from JG1 which was the unit Werra was glad to be away from because of the inactivety at Jesau. Transferred in Feb 1940 to JG3 to protect Berlin he missed this chance of early combat as well as the initial attack in the west. Not getting into serious action until the 20th May.
The date of the 19th April was a mistype on my part. Again thanks for the info-I’d never have found that item on the internet!

This appears to be another pic of the same incident.

    Hello Skyskooter
Yes your photo is of the same incident and it’s unusual in that I have never seen this image before which I must have missed during my research all those years ago. When we were doing the preparatory work before filming the TV programme which featured the complete bomber crew, Peter Ayerst, and many eye witnesses, we were told by the girls – by then mature women – that they had been interviewed and filmed for a newsreel which was shown in cinemas all over Britain. We surmised the filming was done by either British Movieton or Pathe News but nothing was turned up by the HTV researchers. I have often wondered how thorough they went about their work? Did your photo come from this footage?

    Hi Andy
I should read all the threads before posting a reply which would have contained the information that back in 1989 when I presented a TV programme on the events surrounding the crash of 1G+FS the young girls were then spritely women in their very early sixties and their married names were Wendy Smith (husband Mike) and Cathy Goodyear (husband Norman) and I have a nice photo of them taken with Peter Ayerst at the crash site. Also I have a photo of them with four of the German crew of 1G+FS when in April 1988 they visited Chester to check out the scene of their earlier visit in 1940. During this visit they were ‘entertained’ in the officers mess of RAF Sealand and it was an enjoyable visit for eveyone, their visit making the TV news and was a precursor for the subsequent TV show. Peter is still alive and the girls would be in their mid-eighties so they could still be around. I’ve lost their addresses but they were then living in the Chester area and I have some old telephone numbers if you want them.
    Again all the best

Two girls and a crashed bomber

Sitting here after several days of caption writing, I thought I’d just share one of the great images I have been collating and describing.

    Just a lovely period photograph.

    Hi Andy
We’ll meet again over the Cliffs of Dover and in case you do not already know the identity of the two young girls in the photo they are Wendy Anderson and her cousin Cathy Jones posing alongside Heinkel He111P (1G+FS) that crashed at Borderhouse Farm on the 14th August 1940 and the event is well covered in my book. I have other photos of this incident if you are interested.

    All the best

Thanks for your comments regarding the attack on Middle waallop on the 14August 1940 but this is also covered in great detail in chapter 6 of my book. A couple of the photos you have featured were used to illustrate the damaged caused and these were from a sequence of photos I obtained so many, many , years ago that I have no record of their original source. Your images are somewhat sharper than mine and there are about 4 or 5 I have never seen.
But your photo of a crashed Ju88 (?) is cetainly not the one shot down after attacking Middle Wallop as it ended up as a burnt out wreck as per the photo in my book.

    Colditz Glider

A full scale replica has recently been constructed by enthusiats at the Altenburg Museum – Museum Flugweit Altenburg/Noblitz -and will shortly be transported the short distance to Colditz where it is to be put on display. It appears from photos to be a faithful reproduction even down to featuring a gingham pattern covering fabric which I believe was used in POW pillowcases.
Check it out on their web site-http://www.flugweit-altenburg-noblitz.de.
Hope this information will be of use.

    Heinkel remauns in Somerset garden

A detailed account of the action that resulted in the crash of Heinkel He.111P
(1G+OT) of 9/KG27 at Puriton forms a crucial part of Chapter 8 of my recent book ‘Achtung Spitfire,Luftwaffe over England,Eagle Day 14 August 1940’. Based on first hand accounts from Luftwaffe and RAF combatants, and local eye witnesses, it fully describes the action fought over the Welsh Valleys and the Bristol Channel resulting in the abandonment of the Heinkel just after it had crossed the coast. There are photos of most of the German airmen but for some reason the publishers didn’t include them all. It was part of a Kette that was wiped out by flight of fighters led by Stanford Tuck. I should have been on the dig but I was on holiday in Jersey and Gaterh and Ian started without me!

The tragic personal life of Alan Feary and his unfortunate demise is featured prominently in chapter six of my book ‘Achtung Spitfire – Luftwaffe over England’ but for some reason the publishers did not see fit to enclude a photo of him of the ones in my collection. The son he never knew David Drake-Feary lives in Australia.

Geoff Stevens – real name Stephens – now lives in Newark having moved from London some years ago. An excellant artist an example of his work forms the front cover of my book ‘Actung Spitfire – Luftwaffe over England’
