    It wasn’t so much an accidental nuclear exchange i was commenting on but more the fact that there are numerous issues between China and America that could bubble over to boiling point in a very short space of time, weeks or even just a few days perhaps, diplomacy fails and the shooting games begin…

    Why would anybody use nuclear weapons when the outcome is so absolute? That is the very simple question. MAD is still very much in place between Russia and the US as it is and China is well on the way to towards reaching the same level with India bringing up the rear. Information and power generation targets produce very little ‘devastation’ just massive economic damage.

    The reason that China is rapidly improving its strategic forces is because of the fear that the new US NMD and TMD systems, together with US strategic stealth asset such as the B2 and US advantages in sub forces that America might soon be able to deliver such a devastating first strike against China’s present strategic missile force that China would be hard pressed to fire any missiles capable of hitting the CONUS (of which many would be expect to be successfully intercepted by TMD and NMD) that China would no longer have a credible second strike capability, never mind MAD. That is a situation no nuclear power can accept as such weakness makes it that much more feasable and tempting for a hostile nuclear power to launch a devastating first strike with little fear of reprisals. After all, put in China’s shoes, do you think any American administration would tolerate a situation where China or Russia can launch a first strike of such devastating effect that the US would have a very high probabilitu of having no second strike capability left to respond.

    Nclear weapons have already been used against a non-nuclear power. There is absolutely no reason to argue that it can’t happen again (just look at some of the rehoric against Iran). Many believe that the only reason a nuclear exchange had not happened already is because of the certain knowledge that the consequences of that would be a nuclear counter attack which can very easily escalate out of all control to the point where MAD is achieved. It is this promise of mutal annihalation that has kept nuclear weapons from being used again, and projects like NMD and TMD only serves to weaken MAD, and if the supporters at the pentagon get their way, it will allow the US to pretty much strike at any nuclear power, maybe except Russia, with impunity because America would have a very high confidence level of being able to stop any retaliation strike from doing much, if any damage.

    Thus it can be pretty feasible for the US to start using nukes again if they feel that they can get away with it without having to pay the price of getting nuked in return. I mean, if you see China or Russia as such a potential future threat that you would go to trying to destroy its economoy to stop them realising their potential to become a serious threat, its not such a huge leap to decide it would be better to nuke that country back to the stone age so you don’t have to worry about them coming to get some pay back later on. Solve the problem once and for all.

    Then there is also the accidental nuclear exchange that Jon James brought up. A conventional strike will have to be massive in order to even approach causing the kind of damage you are suggesting. What do you think the guys on the recieving end is going to make of hundreds to thousands of nuclear capable ICBMs and crusie missiles coming at them? Especially in light of the opposing side possession ABM capabilities that will already degrade your counter attack capabilities. Are they going to wait for those missile to detonate before launching back? Maybe, but you would expect them to be far more inclined to launch everything they have before the first missiles hit just in case its a full scale nuclear attack. I mean if relations have deteriated to the point where such a massive conventional strike is likely, then neither side is going to have much chance of giving the other side the benefit of the doubt.

    As for China’s DF25s etc, well note that they are IRBMs, and are not capable of taking out thye second strike capabilities of the likes of the US. However, what do you think the Indian response would be if China suddenly unleashed hundreds of DF25s against them? Are they going to wait and hope they are conventional or launch their nukes? Hard to say, isn’t it? But the possibility that the Indians will launch their nukes in response is very much real. That is one of the reasons why China is so vexed about India getting the bomb – a lot of past strike options have suddenly became too dangerous to be viable options any more.

    When used against non-nuclear powers, there is the Chinese promise that China will never use nukes against a non-nuclear power, and also the fact that non-nuclear powers can’t really fire nukes back, so there is no risk of MAD. They will just have to trust that those IRBMs don’t have nukes attached, and hope that the consequences of nuking a neighbour to glass is far far too high for China to think about it. Which is true. But If China did nuke one of its non-nuclear neighbours, then it isn’t exactly going to bring the world to an end. But China can expect to be isolated for a very very long time, and with the rest of the world desperately trying to come up with a means of being able to defeat China. Think the Cold War, but worse for China.

    As for integrated economies, well exactly the same thing was said about Europe prior to WW1. But as I said it is a very big if.

    Not nearly as much, and the likes of Germany in WWI had far more important national objectives then growth. In fact, pre-WWI German was like Israel in many ways, as it too was a new nation fighting for ‘servival’.

    The world today is far more stable and inter-dependence is far greater. I mean China can bring the American economy crashing to its knees just by flooding the market with the US$trillion bonds they hold. Hell, they can seriously hurt the US economy just by stopping buying more treasury bonds from the US.

    If America destroyed China’s economy, add no more treasury bonds to no more ‘made in China’ goods. Have a look in almost any shop to see how that will effect ordinary consumers and the world economy as a whole. Do we also need to see how much China’s economy would suffer without US demand for Chinese goods? The same thing with Russia.

    Everyone presently just have far far too much to loose from such a course of action, and vested interest in all countries will never allow this. Presidents have been assasinated and dictators overthrown by coups for far far less.

    What you are suggesting will change the world forever, and drastically for the worse. Many many people, especially those with the most power, stand to loose the most. Unless it happens by accident or in the heat of the moment, its not going to happen at all. But you can’t plan and implement the total economic destruction of another major nation by accident or in the heat of the moment, and you can’t hope to keep it a secret from your own generals and advisors if you want to implement it. On the other hand, it doesn’t take a whole lot of planning or preporation to order a nuclear launch, thus its far more likely to happen since there may easily be no one in a position to stop it even if 99% of the country is fiercely against the idea.

    Just something to chew on, lets use the US as an example and disregard existing capabilities (for this example the US is playing the role of victim so please do not get upset).

    Someone, hypothetically China or Russia, twenty years from now decides on a sudden and massive attack. They do this by launching a mass of cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, they use a combination of conventional warheads and EMP (add as you like but no NCB) to destroy non hardened computers, power generation and distribution and points of major infrastructure (airports and ports). Simultaneously ASAT weapons takeout communications, early warning, recon and navigation satellites, just think of the economic damage, it would be epic in proportion. Sure the US could strike back but its war fighting capabilities would be massively reduced. This could all be done in a matter of hours.

    Thoughts?

    Ahd who in their right minds would ever consider such a thing? The world economy is so intergrated these days that in the event of war between the major powers, causing long-term economic devastation would be about the last thing anyone wants to see, since that would hurt your own economy and people as well as the opponents’. In your example, China or Russia would devastate their own economies along with America’s even if the Americans don’t respond at all. Seldomly before had there been a better example of a pyrrhic victory.

    If there is a war, it will either be total, with every nuclear tipped missile able to lift off doing so and ending the world, or it will be a ultra-high intensity limited war with very clear and specific political objectives, where the object is to destroy the opposing side’s military forces, or cause sufficent military losses for the other side to want to call it quites. One of the main goals would be to minimise the overall economic disruption of the war, since none but the loonies really want to go back to the standard of living of WWII.

    Another thing to consider would be the long term implications of such an attack. The Americans have shown that they will try to get even if they feel they been wronged by a sneak attack, and I don’t see the Chinese or Russians being in much of a forgiving mood if someone erased all the hard won economic development they had achieved in the last few decades. It would be all too easy to have many such wars over a course of years and decades as the wronged power try to get even and seek vengence/justice depending on your point of view. And it would not take a big leap of imagination to forecast a major ‘security breach’ at key nuclear installations and for some conveniently small nukes to go walkies from the defeated power, which just might end up in the hands of certain fanatical groups on a holy war against the victor.

    Quite simply, the course of action you are suggestion would be a sure fire way of totally destroying the current world order and shatter the fragile peace between the major powers, and sweep away all the certainties, comforts and safety you and I have now become so accustomed to. And every world leader worth their salt will know that as they will have legions of advisors screaming this at them at the first meantion of such a course of action, and generals who would body tackle them to the ground to stop such madness from taking place.

    It might be fine and dandy for second rate fictional writers to dream up such scenarios and only glamorise the shock and awe of devastation on such epic scale, but here in the real world, where people will have to live with the aftermath and the consequences, no-one in their right mind would consider this. And if someone mad enough to approve this manages to get into power somehow and tries to pull it off, there are checks and balances to prevent him from doing so, and plenty of generals willing to commit high treason to stop them, because the consequences are just that grave if it was allowed to happen.

    A good example of how wars between the major world powers might be fought would be the Falkland’s war, where two ‘near peer’ powers came to blows. There was concious acknowledgement of the need to trade and cooperate with the opponent after the dispute has been settled, thus the British showed restraint and didn’t turn the conflict into a blood fued like it is in the Middle East now.

    That doesn’t make sense. Orbital velocity for low-earth orbit is about 7 km/sec. The collision speed with the satellite was about 10 km/sec. Doing that in a tail chase would need an interceptor with a speed of up to 17 km/sec!

    A head-on engagement with the satellite moving at 7 km/sec and the interceptor adding a further 3 km/sec sounds much more reasonable.

    Well thats what the BBC artilce I read said, and it had diagrams which showed as much. This would also be consistent with reports that the NMD shield radar at Alaska was used for tracking info and also with the position of the ships. If it was a head-on engagement, then you would need to track the sat from much further away, which may not be possible given the LoS limitations of the ships being that far west.

    However, a merge hit does not necessarily equate to a tail chase, I should have made that clear. The course of the missile could still be designed to bring it into the path of the sat, which may well add the missile’s volecity to that of the sats. Its just the closing speeds would be lower then a head-on attempt.

    3. Anyone who thinks this was a simple ASAT modification and rogue sat kill is fooling themselves. Read this:

    The interceptor destroyed the target at an altitude of 130 NM. The target was approaching the launch site at over 17,000 mph in a decaying orbit.

    Now what does that really sound like to you?

    I think you might be a little selective with your presentation of the information there mate ;), as far as I have gathered, this was a merge/tail chase hit, thus the ground speed of the sat is going to be substantually higher then the relative speeds between the missile and the sat at the point of intercept. The decaying orbit was also at a pretty low rate and at a steady rate, making it easy to predict. But then that was what the missile was designed to do to launching ICBMs, only ICBMs will be going in up not down.

    It was an impressive feat of engineering, and the fact that this is a slight mod of an operational missile makes its impact much greater and immediate then a heavily moded ballistic missile that may or may not be entering active service, and I suspect one of the main objectives of this act was to make that clear. Americans just simply can’t stand the idea of ‘evil commies’ having one over them.

    M2K carrier much powerful engine with atleast 400KG more weight than RD-93. Add to that internal fuel capacity of M2K is 800KG more than FC-1. so no wonder it is 1 ton heavier than FC-1. I am not even going into 9 weopon stations and 6300KG weopon load of M2K.

    Please try to at least understand a statement before ranting against it.

    How is anything above not charaterised by the statement that, the two countries/blocks have different design philosophies that make any attempt at extrapolating the weight of one plane using another of a similar size designed by the other country a pointlessly inaccurrate excerise?

    your basically where the French were in Mid 70s interms of aircraft manufacturing.

    That rant only goes to sum up your pathetic compulsion to bash any and everything Chinese any chance you get that consititutes the only reason for you deciding to post in this thread and others like it.

    No, and I even specifically said otherwise. However, when being designed, the J10 was almost certainly designed as a fighter first and foremost, just like the F16A. It has multi-role capabilities because it has advanced radar and avonics, but its struture is unlikely to have been beefed up as much as dedicated multi-role figthers like the F16E. The F2 is a even more obserd comparision as it was designed principly as a naval striker, designed to carry very heavy AShMs, and lots of them, which required an even stronger and heavy structure.

    I’m assuming you mean ‘little more than seven tonnes’. But no, I am not sure what the weight of the J10 is because there are confliction reports. Personally I think its in the 8t range, but I will not rule out 7 or 9t without more evidence.

    However, what I am saying is that it is a flawed comparision to compare the weight of planes based soley on their physical size, and to compare and principly air superiority type that was designed as such against swing role designs that are going to be inharently more heavy because of the need to carry large ordinance as well as tanks and AAMs (which requires more pylons to be rated for heavier loads which equates to more weight).

    Is just me, or the idea of the J-10 being something like 5% heavier than the IAI Lavi is just unbelievable…

    More unbelievable then the J8 being longer then a flanker? Would you beleive that going just by the weight of the two?

    What are the weight differences about an unregulated and a regulated inlet system.Similar thing with radar-system, Grifo-type versus RDI.

    More like you assuming others would pull the same tricks as you would. When I said tanks, I was of course talking about full fuel tanks. Who in their right mind would even think that the J10 can’t handle tanks with fuel in them? :rolleyes:

    What you are not grasping is that only the inner-most pylons are used for tanks, while the heaviest things carried on any other pylon are AAMs and light bombs. Only having two wing root pylons to carry very heavy loads is going to require far less support then needing to clear more pylons to handle heavy loads.

    Of cause you can detune a fighter to single role and shed weight by that, like the J-7. But what will you get from that,

    Er…more agility, better TWR, higher speed, more range etc? Its hardly difficult to figure out the benefits of a lighter plane. In fact, every design decision of a plane is weight v benefit constrained by cost.

    when fitting much more high agility weapons on that. The J-7 and the Atoll is another story, like early Sidewinders.

    Agile weapons will only make up for so much in the lack of performance of the platform, else if we apply your logic, we would not need figthers any more, just fit AWACS with missiles and your set.

    By the way, the MiG-21F-13 was 4980 kg empty, 7370 kg TOW with two R-3S and a MTOW of 8625 kg, but no real radar, to be more than a fine-weather dayfighter.

    It does not matter what OEW the Chinese do claim, because in reality that does change nothing in real performances of the J-10, so stay a bit more relaxed about that.

    Translation, ‘not even factory figures can change your mind’. :rolleyes:

    If CAC comes out and gives an offical EW that is a lot lower then what was previously thought, then that changes every assumption made on the performance of the jet based on those numbers.

    In such cases, applying some -10 dB RAM on the first-stage fan blades can do wonders for a fighter’s overall RCS. It’s interesting that the Chinese and Russians (with the Su-35BM) have opted for RAM on the engine itself for retrofits while the Americans have opted for radar blockers. The tradeoffs may be somewhat different, and I’m not sure which method is better overall (due to lack of hard data).

    No doubt, especially in developing RAM that can be applied to moving engine parts–I wasn’t questioning anybody’s capabilities. 🙂

    I question a lot of things, including the levels of RCS reduction of the Typhoon and Super Hornet, so it is reassuring when I can actually see some visible features, that’s all. By the way, Sukhoi has explicitly acknowledged the issue of external stores, and claim to be working on reducing the RCS of the stores themselves and the pylons; it’ll be interesting to see whether anything tangible comes out of this for Russian fighters (aside from weapon bays on the PAK-FA). So far, there’s the R-77 redesign (conventional instead of lattice fins), although that could be for other reasons, as well.

    That’s a good observation (albeit the Super Hornet only has four if you count the wingtip rails), although it’s just one factor. I still wonder about the Typhoon’s intakes, which may or may not hide the engines well.

    On a side note regarding semi-recessed missiles, I couldn’t help but smile when I read a website that said or implied that the Su-27 hid missiles from radar in the “tunnel” between its nacelles like the F-14. 🙂 I’m sure this was done just because it was convenient and good for drag–sure enough, the F-4, F-15, and other older fighters also have semi-recessed carriage of some sort (the F-106 even had internal bays just to reduce drag)–but these days, the hot topic is RCS.

    Yes, “probably” in the sense that the measures are more visible to the eye–that’s what I was originally getting at. Official statements that are more specific than the ones we usually get would also suffice, but these are rare.

    Well, their overall configurations may be pretty conventional, but their stealth is still quite visible, especially on the F-22. If you look at the attached image of the F-22’s unusual canopy, you can clearly see how it is aligned with the slope and contour of the fuselage, which is not something you’d likely see on a non-VLO fighter. The second attached image shows the strange shaping that is present on the seams of all of its flaps. We all may have a different idea of what “stealthy” looks like aesthetically, but if you’re familiar enough with the actual principles involved, the F-22 and F-35 do indeed look stealthy, and quite completely so (which is key). Of course, only computer calculations, actual RCS testing, and ultimately combat can reveal the truth, as my SR-71 example showed.

    Right, that’s pretty much what I said in the first paragraph of my last post. Perhaps I appeared to contradict myself later on, but that’s just poor writing on my part–there are a lot of factors at play here.

    Good point–however the J-10’s RCS turns out now, it can still get better.

    For “reduced-RCS” fighters, anyway–an uncoated canopy would destroy the F-22’s stealth. 😉

    Agreed, I was just pointing out something that was missing that raised some questions. Even the YF-23, for example, is not above criticism–in another thread, I showed a picture indicating that contrary to popular belief, its intake S-ducts do not hide its engines from all frontal angles, and another that showed that this issue was addressed in the production F-23. And do you want to know about a visible flaw in the F-22’s stealth? Two of its air data probes protrude from either side of the forward fuselage near the nose (one of which is visible in the first attached image). They were all supposed to be flush with the skin, but there was not enough time to get these two working right in conjunction with all of the flight testing that needed to be done, so they were left this way, and are now the largest single contributor to the F-22’s frontal RCS (the F-35 has the same issue–maybe it’s just extremely difficult to solve). I guess this leaves some room for improvement in the future.

    Fair points all round, and I think its safe to say that we are broadly in agreement across the board, thus there is little left to say. 🙂

    It´s called structural integrity. If that theory of yours was correct, the Typhoon with it´s 85% of non metalic composites would be weighting 8/9 tones, it´s not… And the Dassault Rafale should be way lighter than the Mirage F2, the F-16 should be lighter than the F-104, the Mirage 2000 should be lighter than the Mirage III, etc, etc, etc. I can find, literally, dozens of examples in which your comparison is just plain wrong, so leave the “sad” comments to yourself.
    If the J-10, a fighter broadly similar in size to the Dassault RAFALE, is a 7 plus ton plane, we have two options, the Chinese industry just made a huge breakthrough in composite materials and aerospace design, and every 4º and 5º generation fighters from Russia, the USA and Europe are with weight problems, or, the J-10 can´t carry almost nothing under it´s wings. I have serious doubts that any of these are true.
    And the JF-17 can cut almost a ton in clean weight in relation to the Mirage 2000, because they cut more than two tones of external ordnance in the design… And of course, that being “trés triste”, i could alway´s point out that the F5E TigerII, a plane who his almost of the same size of the JF17 and has a similar configuration his only a 4,4 ton fighter, despite being a design of the early “seventies” and theoreticaly being made of “heavier and weaker material a couple of generations behind” the JF17.
    It´s IMPOSSIBLE that the J-10 his a 7 plus tonnes, that´s just wishfull thinking.

    Your entire line of reasoning is flawed even though you already touched upon the reason already.

    You are comparing western design philosophy with Chinese. Just because Europeans and Americans like to make their planes heavy to meet the multi-role criteria is no reason to insist that the Chinese are also doing so. The M2K, F16E, Typhoon and Rafale are all designed as multi-role fighters meant to carry AAMs, bombs and AShMs, maybe even all at once. That requires substantually greater structural strength, which equals wait. Just look at how much weight the F16 has gained moving from the basic AA F16A to the multi-role F16E, and thats even with improving and increasing use of composity materials. Comparing western types to Chinese types is simply apples and oranges.

    There is little to no evidence to suggest that the Chinese are also imposing such requirements on their fighter designs, and for the most part, it looks like the PLAAF is still mainly a type dedicated force because they have the numbers and depth of types to do so. We have not seen the J10 carry anything heavier then fuel tanks or lightweight bombs. It looks pretty clear that the J10 is primarily an AA type, while the strike missions would be left to the JH7As and Su30s.

    You argue that the JF17 is lighter because it was designed to carry less, but funny that you refuse to apply that same logic to the J10. Hell, your F5 example only serves to further underline the point that a plane can be remarkably light, thus physical size is a very variable means to judging weight. Another example would be the J8II, which is actually similar in size to the Flanker, yet you would not have guessed it just going by the weights.

    And also remember that the JF17 uses absolutely no composites and is still a ton lighter then the M2k. One wonders how lighter a plane designed with a similar philosophy but also employs a lot of composites would be compared to western types of a similar size.

    I don’t doubt that Chinese engineers can develop effective RCS-reduction measures, just how much was ordered to be done (research, implementation, and maintenance all cost money). First of all, 15 m² for the unmodified Su-27/J-11 is huge! 😮 If the reduction to 5 m² includes the entire system (with external stores), then they did a pretty good job, although that’s still kind of large for a fighter. This level of reduction is typically the result of treating most every radar hotspot with RAM. The resulting reduction in detection range against enemy radars in this case would theoretically be 24% (i.e. if another fighter could previously detect it from a range of 100 km, the detection range will only be 76 km now).

    There was no meantion of stores and the description seems to be focused on the how they worked on intake and treated the exposed engine blades with RAm etc. The 15m RCS was most likely the result of the Russians not doing anything to try and reduce RCS in the orginial flanker, so a lot of fairly simple measures were likely to have yielded much higher the usual gains.

    But it still shows a lot of capabilities in that regard, which makes it seem unlikely that this was the first attempt made by the Chinese at RCS reduction. Since much of the technology used to modify the baseline Su27 into the J11B came from the J10, I don’t think it would be unreasonable to suggest a very high probability that RCS reduction techniques were also transfered.

    I don’t know, just looking at them, none of the “Generation 4.5” fighters, including the J-10, look like they’re designed with reduced RCS in mind at all, save perhaps for the canopies of the Typhoon and Super Hornet (more on this below) in addition to the Super Hornet’s intake radar blockers. For comparison, an example of an aircraft that was deliberately designed for reduced RCS but still did not achieve what we now call “stealth” is the SR-71, which certainly looks the part.

    Yet the typhoon and superbug both boasts of having very small RCS. I’m not talking about F22 level RCS reduction, but certainly a lot smaller then most 3rd gen figthers. Although one important think both those planes hold over the J10 is semi-recessed body hardpoints that allow them to carry at least 4 AAMs without having to suffer much RCS increases as would be the case when using pylons. That means those two planes probably has a more practical advantage to their RCS reduction measures.

    Also, I would be wary of judging a plane’s stealthiness just on appearences. Aside from the sawtooth doors, the F22 and F35 don’t really strike anyone as having a ‘distinctively stealthy’ appearence, but there is no doubting that they are ghosts on the radar.

    Well, the F-16 similarly has a naturally low RCS, although I doubt this was originally by design (correct me if I’m wrong). Later on, some RCS-reduction measures were taken on the F-16, which includes the visible metallic film on its canopy (hence the gold tint). While some aircraft have such a feature in order to shield the crew from strong electromagnetic radiation, in the case of the F-16 it trades the high RCS of the cockpit area (due to the pilot, ejection seat, HUD, etc.) for the relatively low RCS of the canopy’s otherwise radar-transparent form. Although this is one of the most obvious RCS-reduction measures, it apparently was not applied to the J-10 for some reason (it doesn’t have to be gold-tinted, but the J-10’s canopy looks totally clear). The fact that evidently more could have been done naturally makes me question how much effort was put into reducing the J-10’s RCS.

    Well there is actually pictures of the PLAAF experienting with tinted canopies some time ago, as can be seen with this J11 pic.

    So the PLAAF likely rejected the idea either because it was not deemed to be effective enough to justify the cost, or it could be that the material was not up to standard. Although the later is not very likely was it would never have been tested on an actual jet if it was not deemed strong enough to start with.

    It is also possible that they only just developed the tech, and it will be applied in the future.

    However, tinted canopies is just a minor issue when it comes to stealthiness, there are many other factors that will effect the plane’s RCS and judging a plane’s RCS just on tinted windows is not very sensible.

    It’s impossible to tell from the pictures I’ve seen, but at least the duct is long enough for this to be true. Overall, the level of RCS reduction depends on how much thought and effort was put into it, which we can’t always see. Also, since detection range varies as the fourth root of RCS, the J-10 would need a relatively large amount of RCS reduction to overcome a much smaller advantage in radar capability by its opponent. This is difficult to accomplish when carrying external stores because the combined RCS of the stores, their pylons, and their interaction with the airframe can overwhelm the efforts to reduce the RCS of the airframe alone.

    Considering that China was able to lower the RCS of the Su27/J11 from around 15m^ to 5m^, and that was working with an airframe that never had RCS in mind when it was designed. It should give you an indictation of the capabilities of the Chinese in this regard.

    While you cannot accurately guage the ‘stealthiness’ of a plane just by looking at it, you can determine if RCS reduction was a factor when the plane was designed. And with the J10, there are many details that show RCS was considered during the design of the plan. Things such as the intake design, ‘gloving’ of the canard root, blended body etc.

    But I think the general consensus is that the J10 kicks the J11A/Su27’s butt in DACT because of better radar and missiles (hell, even the J8Fs are rumoured to be better then the J11As in BVR because of this), closer range encounters are not so clear cut, with differing stories, and they two are likely to be similarly matched in that regard.

    But against the J11Bs, it will likely be a totally different ball game. The J11Bs uses the same weapons as the J10s and has a radar that is of a similar tech level, but bigger, which should yield better range. The J11Bs will also benefit from RCS reduction, so the BVR game is going to be pretty tight. Same with WVR. But since we have not heard of any results from DACT between J10s and J11Bs, its hard to tell which will hold the upper hand. But that match up is likely to be similar to the F15 v F16 anaology people have been using before.

    I was under the imprresion from reading on many other boards that the Chinese shootdown of a Sat was seriously stupid in that it left debris in orbit thats a hazard for other stuff up there (including the martians!), now as i understand it or have been led to understand the US shootdown will be differant in that the Sat is almost re-entering therefore the debris itself should basically all burn up therefore not making a huge debris cloud thats lethal to anything it might encounter. Someone please chip in and correct me if i’m wrong!

    You are going to be leaving a lot of debris in space even if the target is in low orbit because the force of the strike, be it explosive or kenetic, is going to send bits flying in all directions and some of that will no longer be re-entering the atomosphere immediately.

    Past US and Russian/USSR ASAT tests were carried out in low orbit, but the last piece of orbiting debris did not come down until 1994 iirc.
