plawolfhmm, but isnt the missile and targeting pod on the ‘under-necel’ pylons to either side of the M400 pod proving to be just as good an obstical as the nacels would have done to the pod’s FOV? i think the areodynamic elemint would be the more important cause (maybe having the pod in between the engines causes some major airflow changes?).
besides, even if the structure is just a pylon, it doesnt neccessarily mean that it is just a pylon. as i really doubt any half decent engineer will waste that much space on a fighter by leaving it empty and not have something (secondary function?) in mind for it (or rather the space in it).
for example, it would make a decent sized conformal tank, but the loose fitting between the plane and the ‘pylon’ would seem to rule that out (unless its a self contained tank that can be quickly and easily installed/removed); it might make a decent housing for an intergrated EW/ECM suit (note the absence of the jamming pods on the wingtip mounts); it can hold additional avionics to support the M400 pod or just to add extra capacities to the plane itself etc.

If the pilot was able to RTB and circle, why wouldn’t he have been able to eject when it became clear it wasn’t going to recover from it’s nose down attitude?
might have only been a minor problem (or at least it seemd that way) to start off with. the pilot tried to save the plane, but when the real danger became apparent, he might not have had time to eject.
also, some older ejection seats require the plane to be at a certain posture (and maybe within a certain speed braket as well) for the ejection to be successful. if the plane have control problems, the pilot might not have been able to right the plane in time to eject.
there are loads of possible reasons, its almost impossible to tell which is the real cause unless more detailed info becomes available.

most of the PSed pics are off too poor a quality to be made by professionals. they also add in pointless details like carrier hooks and display team paint schemes which has zero intellegence value.

highly unlikely (boardering on the impossible). if the canisters did carry LACMs, that would leave the destroyers without AShMs, which is an unacceptable possition.
also, 8 LACMs dont really count for that much this day and age, and certainly doesnt come anywhere near justifying loosing the much valued AShM capacity for a modern destoryer.
it is also extremely unlikely that the missile on show is some sort of AShM.
the nose isnt sharp enough to make it an efficient supersonic weapon. but there is just plainly no need for a subsonic missile to be that huge, as subsonic flight doesnt burn nearly as much fuel as supersonic (meaning its extremely unlikely that anyone can manage to obtain realible target info far enough out to exploit the missile’s full potential range), and also because such a lumbering weapon is not going to find it easy to get throw the layer defences of most modern warships. especially since the design doesnt look that inspiring in the manoverability area.

More technology gathering by the Chinese for one.
To force the Russians to sell more advanced weapons to the Chinese for the other.
and most of all, it is political, to reward the Europeans for defying the US and reinforce “multilaterism”.
The usual Chinese style is to buy an initial batch of fighters in a large quantity, then license to make in China for the rest. Or absorb the technologies to be applied to a similar indigenous plane. That will be the PLA style.
But the Chinese political style is to use money, in the form of large purchases, to spread influence. Except in the case of Russia, Israel and the Ukraine, where arms purchases had a political motive, most of these purchases were non military—$11 billion of natural gas from Australia (John Howard is against the floating of the Yuan and Australia is now reluctant to honor ANZUS agreement in a China-Taiwan conflict); $5 billion worth of natural gas from Indonesia; various purchase to South American and Africa, and so on. Just remember China managed to diplomatically isolate Taiwan with the help of economics.
I’m not surprised of the European connection. Look at the Y-8 balance beam AWACS project, then the pics of the PLAAF officers viewing the Gripen. According to some reports, the Chinese war chest may go up to 100 billion. Also in the list are allegedly German submarines
Of course the local Chinese military-industrial complex will cry hell, but the Chinese military industrial complex does not have the size and the political power as held by their counterparts in the US and Russia.
But once again, one has to note that the Chinese had many serious proposals to buy other types of Russian arms before (A-50U, BMP, T-80 tanks, Backfires, Akulas…) but they all fell through. So my guess it’s all just floating bait.
Personally I think the Chinese do not expect the sanctions to be lifted, and if lifted would be thrown with many conditional sentences, so that it only looks good in paper. That’s why I think they went ahead with the anti-secession bill, knowing the consequences to the sanction lifting. Perhaps they really did not want the sanctions lifted—so they won’t be obliged to open the wallet—but their real purpose was to create frictions between the US and the EU, and for that, they may already have succeeded.
The real question is what if the EU actually lifted the sanctions—will the Chinese be obliged to buy something from the EU? That would really call upon the Chinese money bluff. But if the sanctions are lfited, replaced with conditional clauses, the Chinese would have achieved a political victory in paper, without buying any arms, and spending money. The political victory was their main goal anyway.
The end result would be European defense contractor displaying their wares in Chinese shows and Chinese sending delegations to Europe for talks on proposed arms purchases, but the real intention is no other than intelligence gathering, and the end result would end up improving the indigenous products. Example of this ploy was the Chinese looking to buy some BMPs, went to Russia for a close look of the thing. The deal never happened, but BMP like turrets started appearing on the next generation Chinese IFV.
its not just the ‘peek’ under the bonnet aspect that appeals to the PLA. there will be a huge array of none-military european high-tech products that would be available for purchase should the embargo be lifted. things ranging from supercomputers to the latest machine tools.
it doesnt really appear that a lack of theoretical work is what is hindering chinese technological advances, but rather the inability to transfer theory into reality. the tools and computers and advanced matericals tech alone would give the indiginous chinese defence industry a quantum leap in capacity, allowing it to making things it could only previously dream about.
then there is the ‘software’ side. with the embargo lifted, a far greater degree of co-operation and exchanges would be permitted, this should help to improve the standards of the chinese personel using the tools and weapons, and so will also be of great benefit.
as for the money, well beijing has always got the bigger picture in mind, and it doesnt do to go back on your word. even if the embargo is lifted by strick rules limite the amount of military equipment allowed to be sold, china would still reward the nations that led the way in helping to end the embargo.
airbus jets are just as good as boeing ones. giving airbus a near monopoly of chinese civil airline purchases for the next couple of years would amount to a huge windfall for france and germany, and purchases of supercomputers, advanced materials tech, machine tools etc would give the other ‘helpers’ a big bonus as well. it would also give boeing extra motivation to put its political might behind trying to relax the rules on the american side.
that is no doubt another objective that beijing would like to achieve, but one that is more of a bonus if it happens, as opposed to a real target that beijing is determined to reach.
