P-40
Hello Gents and Ladies… I don’t usually get involved with these types of discussions, as I usually bow out to my more learned colleagues, but for this I will make an exception. Donovan Berlin, chief designer for the P-36/40 series wanted the Merlin for the P-40. True….but he did not get the version of the Merlin that he wanted………He got a Packard built -1. A SINGLE stage, two speed blower……… essentially the same engine already installed (Allison). He wanted the same engine as the P-51B. A Packard built -3…. A TWO stage, two speed blower…… The “F” and “L” models both were built with Merlins… performance was roughly the same, with the Merlin having a slight edge at around 12-15,000 ft (off the top of my head). I remember seeing a taped interview with Stephen Grey, asking him about the P-40. His thought on the airplane was this…. In HIS opinion, if the P-40 would have had the same engine as the P-51B/C/D, the airplane would have had at least a 400mph/plus top speed at altitude. Taking shelter in Texas…. Alan
Lone Star Huri
As of last October, the Lone Star Huri had been undergoing some engine runs and was expected to be test flown and in the paint shop……. The colour scheme is not what you are going to expect…. although I can already here it now that this mark Huri never flew with those markings 😮 etc..etc.. Alan

Twin Mustang
Yes the P-82 is back in Midland and was re-assembled for Airsho’ 05. Yes the ownership of this beauty is in dispute…. no secret there….. but here is an update on the aircraft…. While the P-82 work was underway at Breckenridge with Nelson Ezell and co., structural repairs were completed, new plumbing installed in the center section, and the gear was swung! Looks great! I also had a chance to inspect the aircraft while at Breck and was really amazed that despite all the years down at Harlingen, the airframe was in really good condition…..some light corrosion, but nothing at all like on the B-23. The big rebuild issue was and is going to be props… Ham Standard would make the left hand prop, but it was not going to be cheap… the original left hand rotation Aero Products prop just seems to not exist anymore (so far). Shack follow-up
OK, gents I’m a little dis-appointed…. I really thought that the Shackleton flying again would stir up thoughts, comments, etc….. So, I know it’s a little late in the evening now, but Daz, MOTF, TJ, Steve T, & Moggy, I really thought I would elicit at least some response…. at least Sconner did….. and NO comments on Mr Patterson? 😮 What is the world coming to? LOL.. thanks gents for the most tounge-in-cheek comments in the world of warbirds…. Alan
