Submarine Spitfire
I bought a shirt from the RAF Collection stand at Farnborough in July, and I only noticed today that the shirt i purchased from them says “Submarine” Spitfire on it, blunder? or am I missing something?
No PBY your ok with this one as it was a special order for PO Bond to go with his Lagonda with Gatling gun.
There were several made but the design dept had not worked out how to make them surface again.
White Hart Blackout Screen
The piece about flying the Spitfire with the cloud footage was very moving and summed up why we all like flying. Also nice to see the unofficial mess “The White Hart ” at Brasted remembered. There is a facsimile signed board still there.
Not being pedantic here but no doubt someone will check the names on the screen for the “1940” version as opposed to the final version.

Anyway what does “low budget” mean in real money terms, there seemed to be a lot of names involved on the production side on the credits.
First Light
Rather disapointed that they referred to GW having a complete b/down (in Malta) when in fact he was really pulled out on other medical grounds and in fact was soon back testing Typhoons (hardly a rest tour with their history at the time).
Would have been nice to see him walk around the real locations Biggin and Manston and even better in one of the two seat Spitfires (slightly more in keeping than with David Jason) No disrespect to DJ but an actual BOB pilot would seem more in keeping.

Blunder
YES
p e r plus an unwanted b !!!

Mind you i could have been worse if you had bought a Hawkshead Hurricane hat.
SMOKE TRAILS
Quite agree, one of the best reads about what really happened. and i liked the bit about getting hold of a “lost” spit in france and using it as a personal hack!!
G Wellum still lives down the road in Mullion, and he should write an account about testing typhoons whilst on a “rest”.
Brian Kingcombe (willingness to die) covers the same period in a different way,and was the real leader of 92 in its Biggin days.
If you could combine all three books it would be the the best B O B film ever!!!
BLADDER TANKS
check the fuel caps are venting, and also the fuel tank vent is not blocked

SMS88,
I hope you don’t mind, I couldn’t resist the cry from PSP, even working at low resolution.:)

ABS ON AIRCRAFT
Algorithm is taking a short compulsory break from the forum.
Meanwhile there is no reason that the discussion shouldn’t continue in a civilised manner amongst the rest of us.
Moggy
Whats going on here, when did they start fitting brakes, whats the matter with a tail skid, the irish linen is now plastic, and the engine has exhaust valves made from F1 blanks that do not fail at 20 hours,i call that real progress in 60 years.
Biggest problem in GA is finding a decent airfield cafe,We need a Dillows Franchise!!
CHARTS
Actually, I’ve flown with Propstrike and really, he’s a bit more up to date than that.
So saying, he still avoids the AIAA at Thurleigh and the MATZ at Upper Heyford!! 😀
Banstead was a proper “vrp” before there were “vrp;s” it had the name in white all over the station roof
CHARTS
Anyone who has neat folds in their map is a fop and a dandy and probably irons their jeans.
Real pilots screw charts into a large ball, or stretch them over their (open) cockpits in inclement weather. A spiffy up-to-date map is the first sign of a ‘ new bug ‘. I am proud to say my one still has Croydon, Hanwell and the Great West Aerodrome.
Thats all very well, but do you call “inbound” at Banstead Station!!!
G-AFKX
Was this the machine known as the langley defence hurricane!!!
J HAWKE MITCHELLS
At one time it seemed that Mitchells were spread all over europe, and i certainly saw them at biggin, shoreham, (poss the same one),and dinard, (sick engine)
I also had a first hand experience of flying in one at a bournemouth airshow, when his copilot was late arriving.
my brief was to operate the bomb doors, u/c,and flaps.and for this exercise the details were covered whilst taxying out (two minutes)
The display was mostly carried out at zero height followed by wing overs with calls for flaps at the appropiate times.and passes looking up at the control tower (with me waving to the staff hanging out of the windows)
Due to the non appearance of the next act we then had to repeat the whole thing again!!!
He flew the machine very well, and i was impressed with the care he gave the engines.
One of lifes characters he was a hoot.
low n slow
Well the crowd certainly got their monies worth, but i suspect the driver had a one way conversation with his boss / authorities about it. Perhaps he flew hurricane tankbusters in an earlier life!!!
P O C
I read “fighter pilot” decades ago, and was even lucky enough to meet Paul Richey approaching his car in westminster in the late sixties. He offered to autograph my copy, but i had lent it to someone, and then moved away.
Many years later i read a paperback version of P O C. and came to the immediate conclusion it had been heavily “borrowed ” from FP, but with spitfires substituting the hurricanes, and the situations “enhanced”.
No doubt by also sustituting the BOB for the French campaign it confused the situation, and i never found out how the legal issue was settled.
When i see the shots in modern films/tv series, whilst it is always great to see and hear the aircraft, they always seem to miss out on the “cowlings off ” situation, and therefore those merlin engines are hidden away.
The books on the making of films are usually much more interesting than the film themselves, and in the case of POC. it is not in the same league as FP.
The main connection with the flying side was that some of the returning pilots from the french campaign were involved with training new pilots that flew in the BOB.and therefore tended to be overlooked in later years.
NO 1 squadron did a good job (as did all the others) under difficult circumstances, and anyone reading the proper account, will get a good insight as to what really happened.
Smoke trails in the sky,A willingless to die, and,First light,(Barclay,Kingcome, and Wellum)
Are all quality accounts of the period after the fall of France,POC was just a poor substitute.

anti mist tin
when i was in an atc gliding school (615 kenley) the goggles (winch driving) were supplied in a carboard box with a tin like this.
the goggles (mk7 or 8) were supposed to be used to protect the winch drivers eyes from cable fragments.
in practice the goggles were always snapped up by the gliding instructors and the winch drivers never wore them.
many years later when i flew aircraft that needed goggles i found they were very poor in practice, and a good pair of ski type masks worked very well.
the truth is the mk7,& 8 glasses looked the part, but were always very prone to misting up when you needed them most, mainly due to the glass being very close to the eye,and not having good ventilation.
our boxes contained both clear, and tinted lens, and i lent mine to the late neil williams when he needed a pair to fly the pup one day.
