I would’t compare ESSM with Barak, becouse Barak is losing big time there.

Also IMO the Main gun on the AB can handle just fine Surface ships & at closer distance it gets just more deadly.

Finaly, if a ship realy gets in range of less then 500m you can use the MGs just as well.
If I recal corectly, in the incident where the US CG shot donw the Iranian plane, they had opened fire upon the Iranian PT Boats with the main gun & not the Phalanx.

Nop, the reason Phalanx is of is becouse they think that the ESSM can handle the sjort range SAM are just fine & that having aditionaly the Phalanx would mean having system redundanci on board.

Well, maybe the Harpoon or Excocet don’t make the ship sink, but maybe that isn’t even the point.

If you sink a ship the enemy just picks up the survivors & get them home. If you damage a ship the ship is out of the fight as wel, but the enemy will have to send ships to save it & there crew & if they do they have to spend resources, people & time to repair it.

There is a saying htat says: “You don’t have only to be good at what you do, but you also got to be looking good when doing it”

Well, seems that the French never heard that before 😉

Yep, Bangladesh & Ecuador are candidates up for the Leanders.

As for the Phalanx time will tell. They could be mounted on the Ls, but ho knows what will happen.
But so far I haven’t heard of any planes regarding that.

Also, with the retirement of the Countys, the Barak SAM will be sitting in the Chilean backyard & it is up to be seen what will happen with it.

danmac1 is correct, the 40MM stay becouse they’re already in the inventory.

But on the long run, the idea is to equip all ships with Harpoons

That the Harpoon is not on sales to any South Amrican Nation is not longer true Ja Worsley, since Chile just adquired 20 Block II on a 1st adquisition to the US.

Those will be mounted on the Dutch & the T23 for now beeing.

AS for the Williams, it is planed to recive the folowing refits in short time:

    -Mounting of a Oto-Melara
-Update from Seawolf to Seawolf II
-Incorporation of the Excocet 40 MM

This upgrades are supost to be done in 2007 or 2008

the Countys are going to be sraped, actualy one has already been sold to India to be dismanteld.

The last 2 remainign Leanders are for sale.
Ecuador & Bangladesh have shown intrest so far on those units, but acording to the deal made with the UK (on the Type 23) they’re in charge of resailing them, & later upgrading tham as well

I can see how it is supost to get out of the water, but how is it going to be taken back into the sub?

Also, wouldn’t such a mission endanger the sub, by giving away his position to an eventual ASW warplane in the area?
