The Americans will have some strict disposal rules imposed as well. The F111 shares some components with the F-14 and the Americans are paranoid about parts getting to Iran.

Well as I said we shall see, I remember much talk of the sky falling when woman were allowed onto the surface fleet but in general its been OK. Not perfect but OK.

RN has clearly said that woman will first go onto Vanguard class, as it will be officers first I think the accomodation can accomodate that.

In the end the MOD and RN have been in an increasingly difficult position on this matter, with the USN taking the plunge (pun intended) last year they couldn’t defend the prior position. They are hardly rushing are they, two or three female officers in a few years time.

If you watch the news report Prom you will see the navy clearly stating that radiation is not and was not the reason/excuse given for not allowing woman. The reason given was carbon dioxide poisoning of the foetus, its a weak excuse frankly. If a woman gets pregnant she is off just the same as the surface fleet.

I bet on no decision for tommorw :p And if there actually is a decision I think Rafale.

But personally, I’d love to see the whole thing canceled, just for the rants it will bring

Don’t worry I have my “ACME RANTOTRON 2000” on charge!:diablo:

On a vessel where people have to hot bunk because there isn’t enough room for all the crew, you don’t have the space to partition. Basically you have two options.
    1) design new subs for gender partitions.
    2) Create gender inequality in berthing conditions with the women having the senior enlsited/ junior officer staterooms and all the men relegated to the large bunkroom regardless of rank.
    3) Just shove the women into the current berthings requiring them to shower and change with their mostly late teen-early 20s male counterparts.
    4) Somehow do an all female crew.

But as I have already said these excuses that have been trotted out over the years by the RN are rather weak when other navies have managed mixed crews with far smaller Diesel subs. Did the Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Spanish and Australian navies make significant habitation changes to their submarines to allow mixed crewing? I doubt it. So I call it out as a clear excuse rather then a valid argument.

Well America decided to induct some woman into submarine training last year which was probably the last straw for the RN. There have always been excuses about shared use of heads, beds, lack of space and cost.

Considering navies like the Norwegian, Danish and Swedish have done it since the mid 80’s in far less roomy Diesel SSK the above excuses look fairly silly with USN and RN operating nice big Nuclear subs. Norway had its first female submarine captain in 1995.

This is the second time a UAV is downed this year by using electronic warfare.

On September 12, 2011 Armenian forces downed an Israeli made UAV over the disputed Karabagh teritory. According to the Armenian side, they downed it without firing a shot. They say they used electronic warfare. Video link:

Interesting. Maybe UAVs and UCAVs are overrated.

The Elephant in room is the datalink for UAV and UCAV, even if it is a frequency agile setup its still jammable by a nation with reasonable electronics knowledge. The other issue is availability of control channels, in theory a digital system could allow lots of aircraft to be controlled but there are limitations with bandwith.

The supposed solution is autonomous UAV/UCAV. Problem with those is firstly you have to pack some significant processing in to get it take pictures of the right place and there is no way any politician will allow them to carry any weapons however sophisticated they are.

No crew will ditch an aircraft or bail out over the sea if they can avoid it even in warm waters. The aircraft was flyable albeit not in a condition to get it back to a friendly base. Hence forced to land on Hainan, they smashed or threw out as much as they could but it was in my opinion far more of an intelligence disaster for the US then the loss of this RQ-170. If the US was really concerned about it falling into enemy hands they would of had nowhere near the Iranian border.

In the end its one of those things, Iran gets some semi sensitive technology which will take them a long time to fully understand and some PR pictures. My guess is the intelligence gathered so far for the US was far more valuable.

    You know I don’t know.

Frankly I am slightly confused why Australia is having those problems. Just ensure the T&C’s plus pay are attractive enough to recruits. Or is it more of an issue with getting enough officers?

Indeed I agree with Musashi, the health excuse was fairly weak as it was: Carbon Dioxide risk to the embryo. If a female crew member gets pregnant shes off the boat anyway surface fleet or sub force. Its a volunteer service anyway so the woman accepts the risk signing up for it.

In general the same rules about men keeping their torpedos tucked away apply in the surface fleet, its imperfect but if somebody wants to serve our nation I see no reason why they can’t volunteer as long as they can meet the same entrance requirements.

So in the same vein I have no problem with woman applying to join the Royal Marines or Parachute Regiment. As long as the physical requirements are not reduced they get the same chance as the men. (Woman have applied none as of yet have passed the physical selection process).

In theory an all female crew would be better in a Submarine, woman tend to be smaller and are psychologically more able to work together as a group in a confined space.

I’m sure mixed crews will be fine in the sub service, actually I am surprised the service held out this long.

Not yet as far as I am aware.

To be honest whilst it will be irritating to the US it isn’t as significant security breach of technology as the EP-3 that was forced to land on Hainan Island after that crash with a J-8. That was an intelligence field day for the Chinese!

The RQ-170 will have sensitive technologys but considering the US was prepared to risk it over Iranian territory shows that they accepted the risk of it going down.

True China’s strategic fuel reserves are sizeable and they could run a COGAG based fleet (to be fair modern Gas Turbines are fairly fuel efficient in their own right) but the cost savings of CODAD can’t be ignored.

Also commonality is probably another reason for the 054 and its sub classes success. By developing ASW and AAW variants from the basic GP frigate they make fleet maintenance far easier.

Another thing to consider is the availability of Gas Turbines, so far China has used American and Ukranian GT sets in their vessels. Chinese Gas Turbines are well into development but probably not ready for a production ramp up, in respect of the QC-185 WS-10 variant I have a hunch work priority is being given to the aero engine rather then the marine program. The Diesels in the 054 are modern (based on the SEMT Pielstick 12PA6V280) and fully made in China.
