Well it rather saddens me that people are happy to throw the words “sick” or “creepy” about posters they don’t know beyond an AVATAR and a forum name. That’s just unfair how can you truly judge people when you have never met them. v3sb raised a question, maybe a bit to soon after recent tragic events but people have no right to attack him or anybody else when he conducted the question politely…at most say let it lie for a while before discussing. As for myself if you look what I typed I clearly stated that I think the Reds are worth keeping and hoped that wouldn’t change due to any unfortunate or knee jerk events. I did express a PERSONAL opinion that they are boring in their current form and it would be worth looking at how they conduct their displays in the future…I rather resent being portrayed as a sick creepy monster for airing that opinion when none of you have actually met me and other aviation enthusiasts have shared that opinion

I agree now is not the right time but please don’t act like a lynch mob! My sympathies go out to the family of the pilot who going on events is a hero who averted a terrible disaster.

Some very interesting pictures have cropped up on CDB in relation to carrier AEW.

Firstly a larger copy of those Z8 landing trials, clearly not a Photoshop and it is the AEW variant to boot:

    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uwsHXY2yrQM/Tk6v9jwprDI/AAAAAAAAAHU/ggW_QtlgTaA/s1600/10_17489_894ef202b5e7d89.jpg
On another note the big picture clearly shows the wire raisers for the arresting gear.

Further from that we have already seen that mock up of a carrier fixed wing AEW and a blurred distant shot of what might be the real thing. Well CDG have this blurred distant picture of what might be one in flight. Its not the ZDK-03 as it has a different tail:
    http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mCHHjEAd2So/Tk8M6VW8qVI/AAAAAAAAAIE/8sRfwvmbJKY/s1600/New%2BAEW%2Btype%2Bmaybe%2B-%2Bin%2Bflight%2B1.jpg
This does pose some questions, this type really needs a catapult something which is clearly not on the Varyag going on the recent deck pictures. In theory they cold run it off the ski jump but that has its risks which leans me to the theory that considering they have been inducting two heli type AEW types that this might be for the indigenous carrier in very secretive construction and she might well have cats. Of course this goes with China’s general high and low risk solutions to new defence projects.

Low risk: rebuilt Varyag using an airgroup very similar to Admiral Kuznetsov. Also allows to build up general carrier skills.

High risk: CATOBAR indigenous carrier using some as yet of unseen types.

It makes me wonder how that would play out, could the J15 design be adapted into a CATOBAR configuration? Or are we going to see yet another new fighter type. Again going down the low/high risk root considering the J15 is a known equation vs an indigenous CATOBAR fighter type.

Hi Serge, to be honest i’ve been kicking around here for pretty much most of the day and the only activity i’ve seen, is the crane moving back and forth and the hooks being lowered and raised. I can’t see into the drydock itself however you may have hit a good point about the dry dock not being fully flooded yet, hence the delay. I am not concerned though i’m sure there is good reason for it 🙂

Well as I said I don’t think there is any delay, its the weekend so staffing will be lower at Rosyth I would presume. Throw in the practicalities of ensuring its done safely and I would expect that nothing will happen for a few days.

Well ballasting down the barge and ensuring there are no leaks in LB03 will be a very delicate task. I remember watching a documentary a while back about construction of a flight 2 Arleigh Burke class destroyer, the floating out had to be done with great care. Now in that case she was in a dry dock and they pumped the water in, this time they have to carefully ballast down a barge. Get it wrong and LB03 could fall off sideways and HMS QE is scrap!

The build strategy video shows LB03 being floated into the drydock, so my guess is they will ballast down the barge and then float off LB03.

It will be the first time QE will float.

Click the link to the other Key Pub thread I provided, you will find many a person who are less then impressed with the Reds.

Not liking the Reds doesn’t make you any less British.

I hope you wont take offence – but obviously being not being english yourself, you just dont understand.

Ive never met a single person who doesnt think the reds are fantastic, they are a symbol of our airforce, not only that a worldwide known symbol of the UK.

If I saw the royal yacht id think “ah another boat”

See the red – OHHH its the reds, God they make my spine tingle

Actually you will find many people who like myself regard the Red Arrows boring, frankly there are other display teams out there who do more interesting displays. A friend of mine maybe a bit cruelly called them the Red Boring’s. At air shows I would often use the time the reds came out as an opportunity to look at more interesting aircraft on the flight line without the longer queues. Not that I don’t think there shouldn’t be a Red Arrows but I have long felt they needed to take a look at what they were doing, a more diverse and interesting display needn’t be dangerous. On the matter of supporting British industry that is true but that argument would be better served of the reds went over to the Hawk T2.

As for when is a good time and place to discuss the future of the reds, well for some people there is never a good time. I hope that the tragic events of yesterday don’t lead to the loss of another military institution but I think it is fair to discuss its future in a reasoned manner.

    Edit:

Actually there is a thread on this very forum about the Reds and lack of interest:

if RR is so good in R&D so why it has so much acq outside UK?
what Helicopters are using RR engines?. and what modern military engines RR have 100% rights?. and how is Civil portion divided between UK/US/ Germany?. because it may not have the IP rights.
RR is never going to be invited for LCA engine. as India wants partner that will ultimately lead to AMCA engine. RR cannot deliver it. as it has none of military engine sole experiance.
RR will be replaced by PW PurePower and CFM LeapX. once that profitability is gone the rest will crumble by itself. RR has pretty much boxed itself into the corner.

Why does RR have so many acq outside of the UK? Answer thats where the money is! Nothing to do with R&D, RR like BAE Systems has been buying up the US and other countries aerospace sectors due to the UK being a **** poor market. Its also very much a result of globalisation, actually I would say its more about buying up installed client base to advance the services side of the business. Buying Allison for example brought a massive amount of customers into the RR fold and its services business. The only part of the engine business RR doesn’t have direct IP rights over is a small part of the ex Allison business which is held behind a business firewall for national security reasons in the US. What modern fighter engines does RR hold rights over? whats it matter? We are talking technology here! RR easily has the technology to independently design a modern fighter engine…well they did its called the XG-40 and was the development basis for the EJ200 an engine that they hold significant IP rights over. Lots of helicopters fly with RR engines in particular those that use the M250. RR probably has more time building fighter engines then any other in the world! It has significant IP rights and R&D capability based inside the UK.

PW PurePower and CFM LeapX? What have they got to do with the price of fish? Neither engines compete with the Trent range! They are aimed at the narrow body market which RR doesn’t participate in except for partnering with the IAE V2500. The IAE V2500 still has a strong market for many years to come and even if it looses share to new generation engines like PW PurePower and CFM LeapX its hardly going to cause an engine GIANT like RR to crumble. The next generation Trent 1000 is extremely sophisticated and RR will certainly have the next generation well in hand.

I don’t care who India selects to help develop its next generation engine but please don’t harbour ideas that RR wouldn’t be up to the job if asked!

Second biggest does not mean it has more knowledge. It is only good in one area. infact RR is the most vulnerable to competition. RR is not a diversified firm . I dont think RR has 100% IP to all components otherwise whats the point of RR Deutchland. I am not sure RR can built modern fighter engine by itself. Klimov has more experiance in heli engines. and first 3D TVC.
French has more balanced portfolio of Turbomeca and Snecma. Snecma has agreement with GE through CFM international that they would not enter into large size engine market without GE. It is more like business decision rather than lack of ability.

Rolls Royce lacks a diversified product portfolio?!:confused:

Have you looked at their website, they are probably one of the most diversified manufacturers out of all the companies mentioned. Certainly when it comes diversification Klimov is a minnow in comparison to RR! Don’t allow the RB199 and EJ200 fool you, both were developed from RR concepts and technology. If RR wanted to they could easily develop their own fighter engine, they have done it in the past and they can do it again if required.

    Lets have a look:

Civil aerospace – large, medium and small aircraft engines. Helicopter engines, turbojet, turbofan and turboprop.

Defence aerospace: Turbojets, turbofans and turboprops. Combat jet engines and helicopter. Distributed generation systems and APU.

Marine: Automation & control, Bearings & seals, Electrical power systems, deck machinery, Engines (gas turbine and diesel), Propulsors, Syncrolifts, Reduction gears, stabilisation and ship design.

Energy sector: Gas turbines, gas compressors, Diesel engines, Fuel cells and automation.

    Nuclear: Civil and submarine.

Throw in the services side of the company as well which is huge due to the massive product portfolio and Rolls Royce is one of the most diverse companies in the industry after BAE Systems. They have significant IP rights as well so the idea that they are week in that respect is laughable!

Indeed the big three global engine makers are GE, PW and RR.

The EJ200 is basically based on the RR XG-40 ACME technology demonstrator engine.
