I would say this has worked out rather well for the RN Super Nimrod! Constant footage of about how effective the CdG is and plenty of reporting about how Harriers and Ark Royal would of been far cheaper to operate then the RAF aircraft in Italy. Also reports about expensive hotels and drink fueled binges by RAF pilots has certainly helped the Royal navy’s case when it comes to getting the QE class.

Hopefully we will get some good footage (helped by the RN PR department) of Ocean deploying Apaches.

Whilst I don’t think the efforts of the RAF personnel operating over Libya and the point that it is possible to conduct the strikes, the waste of it in comparison to fielding a carrier is being made to the public!

On another note I do feel a strong case is being made to retain Sentinel R1 in service. They have been vital for operations over Libya and frankly as they were going to be retained in service until 2015 anyway I can’t see how it significantly change things if that SDSR decision was reversed!

There is obviously some marketing in the “omnirole” statement but also a bit of truth.

simultaneous decoupled mission management between the front and the back seat, the ability to perform SEAD with its onboard spectra suite and AASM which can also be used in multiple type of engagement is not bad. Nothing inhereantly exclusive to the rafale but it is indeed a very flexible operationnal asset as shown in Lybia.
In theory some other aircrafts would be able to do the same things but I think that in terms of “operationnaly proven” or “concept of use” the rafale has pushed this “omnirole” or “swingrole” doctrine the furtherst.

Look at the number of things (type of missions) a rafale could do…I think it is already pretty respectable.

You must know full well saying that will only anger Typhoon fans! Also tired of the “Omnirole” blah blah blah marketing speak! In the rest of the world we say “Swingrole” which means exactly the same thing as far as I am concerned. All of the jets that competed were Swingrole capable, the Omnirole stuff is just boorish!

I fully expect raging Rafale fans trying to explain the wonders of Omnirole capability vs Swingrole…

Indeed and why fit EMKIT as well when you have EMALS that can launch drones perfectly well.
