Military Pilot Training in the ample air space in Finland
Patria has developed the Kauhava Air Force Base into an international military jet
pilot training centre together with the Finnish Air Force and the Ministry of Defence.
The “Nordic Pilot Training Centre” offers both advanced and tactical jet training in
ample air space using upgraded glass cockpit Hawk jet aircraft. The training,
designed to meet the European/NATO training standards, is based on the Finnish Air
Force training methods with proven track record and over 10 years experience of
training pilots for F-18 Hornet.
The Finnish Air Force has outsourced with great success its elementary and basic
pilot training to Patria. Also Finnish Army and Frontier Guard aircraft and helicopter
pilots are trained in this training unit located in Tikkakoski, Finland.
Patria provides also basic and advanced professional pilot training up to ATPL level
for the civil aviation and is one of the largest Flight Training Organisations (JAR-FTO)
in the Nordic region.
Considering the small number of pilots we are talking about maybe they should farm the training out to another country as they already are doing with their Typhoon pilots in Germany. Finland by all measures has good flight training but other counties could do it as well. It would mean a sgnificant cost saving for their airforce, all they would need is a conversion course onto Typhoon to allow for local mission operational requirements. The only argument I can see for Austria to operate a small number of trainer jets is to keep pilot hours up when they are not piloting Typhoon.

I do agree that the UK should look at adopting the US model of reservist pilots it would offer cost savings whilst maintaining capability.
Typhoon got a gun as it would of cost too much not to fit it.
It then became fitted but not used to keep the Treasury happy and then when A-Stan kicked off the capability was fully restored – despite the aircraft not going to A-Stan.
Actually it would of been easier to leave off the defensive aids suite like the Germans but the RAF didn’t want that! The rumour is the RAF always intend to have a full gun capability and went through this silly process to get it pass the Treasury.
Sentinel was probably offered up to the penny pinchers looking for savings within the ISTAR fleet? Sentinel would always take second place to a Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) platform (Nimrod R1/RC-135). You can imagine how much money is being invested in the RAF RC-135 Air Seeker project? A lot of money invested in it, so something had to go.
I expect that Sentinel will obtain a very good re-sale value? Either another NATO country or as a NATO fleet?

Actually I think they might be rather hard to export even within NATO! The Sentinel R.1 fleet has some very sensitive technology in them. I would think the US has some say over who the UK could sell onto if at all considering its fitted with variant of Raytheons ASARS-2 which is also in the U2.

Actually I’m going off the idea of a medium range SAM it looks like point defences only at the moment.

Well as said Pakistan has already stated that it wanted the J-10 design to mature before they adopted it. JF-17, new F-16 and upgraded F16 were the quickest road to fleet modernisation at this point.
I would think that Pakistan when it does adopt the J-10 will want a Chinese engine more then likely a variant of the uprated WS-10G. They will also want an AESA radar as well.
I have a hunch that Pakistan is mindful of the J-XX and possibly sees it in its fleet after 2025 but they have there hands full as it is for the next decade inducting JF-17 and J-10. I think Pakistan will see J-XX as a credible answer to India’s PAK-FA but thats not saying that China might be developing a single engine stealthy variant of the J-10 which might fit into Pakistans fleet better then a large twin engine fighter. Anyway thats just my speculation for the moment.

What engine to power J-20, which touches some most vulnerable area of Chinese aviation industries. Officially, the WS-15 is still the final powerplant for upcoming Chinese 5th generation fighter jet, as illustrated by below chart. The image at upmost right is the core engine of WS-15.
I’m not entirely sure the upmost right engine is the WS-15 core, it looks wrong. More like a small turbojet to my eyes.

Well firstly the WS-10 has a different configuration to the AL-31 – 3 fan and 9 compressor stages with 1 high-pressure and 2 low pressure stages vs 4 fan and 9 compressor stages with 2 single-staged turbines. In respect of the CFM-56 whilst its core is similar to the GE F-101 DFE and GE-F110
it is a civil engine with different tolerances and material specifications.
Both the AL-31 and CFM-56 along with whatever data they have found would help with WS-10 development but it is still a significant technology jump for China, remember the most sophisticated millitary Turbofan they have worked on was the RR SPEY/WS-9.
I would think for any J-XX testing program AL-31 would be the safest option but the WS-10 is reaching a point of reliability to support a flight test program. Noticeably now Shenyang has the WS-10B actually entering service with the J-11 and a higher thrust WS-10G in development they are in a far better position then they were a few years ago.
Actually the WS-10G as well as supporting the J-11 and J-15 program might be intended as a lower risk backup solution for the WS-15 engine intended for J-XX. China has a pattern of developing low and high risk solutions for many of its defence programs.
