Hawk is a sensible choice, remember Russia tried to move heaven and earth to get India to buy the Mig AT. I presume some very favourable offers were being made to india to accept that type and they still went for Hawk.

All three jets could serve the UAE airforce very well but I don’t think many of us will be surprised if it goes to Bae Systems in the end.

On a similar note didn’t France try and push a trainer version of the Mirage 2000 on the UAE?

The Bae Systems Hawk would be a safe choice for the UAE considering its wide customer base, proven performance and they already operate it.

Im sure a recent report in AFM that the T/A-50 is in very good chance so you never know. Of course if the US hadn’t gone for the T-38 upgrade program the T/A-50 would of been perfect for their needs.

Lightning works as a name for me as it harks back to successful types for both tier 1 partners and it also fits in with the UK’s taste in naming aircraft after various weather conditions these days.

Considering the uk operated the BAC Lightning and America the P38 Lightning I think F35 Lightning II is a very suitable sollution.

Both types were successful in their respective services and imagine the naming ceremony:

A nice video montage of both types and how the spirit is being continued with the F35.

These conversions of old types are certainly an amusing disstraction but looking at the amount of research china is putting into Cruise missile type weapons I think its fair to say that five years down the line we will see a deployable system.

Personally I have a hunch that China is probably already testing a viable system so the five year time scale is probably a bit generous.

President Bush is not bypassing Congress. He is just publicly stating what has already been agree to behind closed doors. Just the usual politics………. :p

Which means Congress can still scupper everthing.

I don’t think there is a Belgian airforce anymore rather an air component.

Then there is the new logo and comedy dress uniform.

Welcome dude!

Actually this is an Aviation Forum with a navy Sub Forum, the Navy Sub forum along with the Army one was axed recently to howls of derision! The Navy sub forum was restored eventually to my relief but not the army one.

The Libya deal is a new one on me! Any details would be welcome as well as the boats specs.

Now that the relationship with Libya has been normalised it will be interesting to see what is on the shopping list.

Ahh the old CVF will be built thread…

An interesting development, of course the devil is in the details and I will be interested at how the Bush administration will bypass congress. Someone with a better understanding of the American political system then I maybe able to answer the latter.

Here in the U.S. we use the MK80 series familiy GP (General Purpose) bombs. These bombs can be delivered in HD (High Drag) or LD (Low Drag) configuration. This configuration depends on this mission. If my squadron is coming in low and hot the MK.82 (500lb) would have a MK.15 Snakeye fin or BSU-86 installed. In this configuration the bomb can be dropped (pilot option) retarded or not. MK. 83 (1000lbs) is delivered with a BSU-85 Para-pack fin an air inflatable ballon deployes retarding delivery as with the MK15/BSU-86 this can be delivered non-retarded as well. Hope this helps with your question.
