Because by declaring the rUK to now be foreigners, you are putting them in the position that carrying out their chosen defense policy may be untenable. Admittedly it’s a messy situation, one where neither side can get everything it wants, but that’s the opposing point of view.
As you say, it does depend on how it is done, and if there is time for a proper handover. But still, it puts the other 90% of the UK in the position of having to buy some new and expensive defense infrastructure which they have already invested in Scotland for the past 50 years. If Scotland is demanding control of Faslane and the associated facilities, I think it’s only fair that they either
A) Count the entire cost of these facilities towards their total portion of the defense assets when it’s all divided up.
or
B) Refund rUK taxpayers for the 90% of the facility that they paid for.

So what? You are also currently British, you are represented in our national parliament meaning nuclear weapons are not being imposed on Scotland. It was a national decision. Personally I think they should have been placed in the South West but that is immaterial, until a referendum that goes for independence you are still part of the family and defence is a national decision.

What do you mean “their back yard”? It is OUR back yard. Unless there is a yes vote in the Scottish referendum we are still one nation. How are the English dictating to the Scots? Are Scottish MP’s prevented from sitting in our NATIONAL parliament? No! Actually Scottish MP’s have been used to force through legislation that doesn’t even affect them.
Yes the SNP are dictating the matter as independence could very well mean total nuclear disarmament for the UK as a whole. These are not facilities that can be easily picked up and dropped elsewhere. This is a national decision as far as I am concerned.
You might be Scottish but like myself you are also currently British as well and represented by an MP in our national parliament. You have a voice nationally just like the Welsh, Northern Ireland and the English.
No the SNP totally hates nuclear weapons, you only have to watch footage of their conference. Joining NATO is nothing to do with giving tacit support for nuclear weapons. It is all about making the idea of independence sound less scary for the Scottish public, it is exactly the same with other issues. They don’t really want to keep the pound or the Queen but will say otherwise for the referendum.
It is politics.
In the end whilst it is no secret here that I support CASD via Trident I also feel this is a decision for the whole nation. A decision to retain or remove our nuclear capability should be made by all of us via our elected parliament in Westminster or a national referendum. If parliament or the nation via a referendum decide to drop our nuclear deterrent whilst I will be personally unhappy I would nevertheless respect the will of the nation. On the other hand I highly resent the SNP (and their CND cheerleaders) via a referendum of only the Scottish population of this nation effectively dictating what should be a national decision.
The only thing in that list which is a deterrent is CASD with Trident anything else is not worth the effort or money.
So the only realistic options on this list is:
A) Disarm
D) Continue with current system, but rebuild infrastructure
On a personal level I rather resent the SNP (with CND cheering them on) effectively dictating the future nuclear posture of the UK.
In the end the cost of the Osprey plus an only a moderate performance advantage over a helicopter based solution is the main barrier for non catapult carrier nations.
Remember the Osprey isn’t pressurised so it can’t particularly take advantage of an increased altitude, the main advantage it has is its speed allowing a faster transit to station and I presume an increased endurance/payload capability. Considering only the US operate the type any nation wanting it have to stump up the cost to integrate into service. Is that worth it over adapting an already in service medium to heavy helicopter?

Look Freddy, you keep posting articles to support your point that the F313 is some form of budget suicide WIG but those articles are from disparate sources and make no reference to the Iranians. You are seeing correlation but forgetting that doesn’t mean causation, unless those articles directly reference Iranian aerospace developments they are not relevant.
The F313 is a laughable mock up and it is starting to leak out now that heads have rolled in Iran over it. It is not a WIG, if you can post an article citing Iranian developments in the area we can review that, until then you are frankly wasting our time.
I’m not entirely sure if people here entirely understand what the F117 was designed for. The F117 was born out of USAF experience of the Vietnam war and was developed to fairly specifically target the Command and Control facilities/nodes of a Soviet style integrated air defence network. The F117 would destroy those command nodes thus punching a hole that less stealthy bombers could move through unmolested (or that was at least the theory).
The curious thing is much of the aircraft’s stealth abilities were down to its mission planning system that plotted a route that favoured the low observable nature of the airframe by placing the aircraft in an optimal position against known radar sites. During the first Gulf War the F117 was far more successful then the USAF was expecting, the USAF was fully expecting some to be shot down in 1991.
Hmmm I wouldn’t say the Vikramaditya will be little better in capability then Viraat but to be honest we are splitting hairs here, the ship is hardly a stellar example of wise procurement. I would also say that it meets the core need for an INS Viraat replacement so I don’t think saying:

Anyhow, in respect of Steam Plant demanding data JSR is a bit silly. It is a well established fact within marine engineering that steam propulsion is more expensive to maintain and operate. Even the last bastion of steam propulsion in the civilian world LNG carriers are starting to move away from that form of propulsion. It is getting very difficult to find suitable trained people to maintain steam plant, the engineering watch keeping for a Gas turbine ship is 25% that of a Steam powered vessel. Here is a book for you to read, a bit old JSR but it has all the key data about steam plant vs gas turbines…even some nice equations to sink some numbers into if you are so inclined.
I have a hunch that the US Naval Institute knows slightly more then you JSR about the details of marine propulsion :very_drunk:
Along with the F-35B – will the RC-135 be IFR equipped with a boom receptacle ??
If so, what will we use to refuel them ?? – is the boom on the Voyager working yet ???

UK F35B will have a probe not a receptacle for a boom. (The lift fan gets in the way anyway)
UK RC-135 are not getting a probe, they will use a receptacle only. We have an agreement with the Americans to use their tankers for our RC-135 fleet.
UK Voyager are not boom equipped, they are equipped with wing mounted pods and a centreline HDU (depending if it is a KC2 or KC3 variant)
I have come across a few RAF cargo/refuelling types who are of the opinion that we should of adopted the KC-135 (RR Conway powered then re-engined to CFM56), it would of been very handy in a number of situations. For example Black Buck would of been far easier with the KC-135 vs the Victor.

The Americans have deep pocket, whilst it caused consternation when first announced I think this is a very happy solution that offers significant possibilities and cost savings. The Americans were apparently VERY interested in what project HELIX offered so now we are part of the Rivet Joint program there is a good chance those capabilities will find their way onto Rivet Joint/Airseeker.
Why did the RAF buy the 40-50 year old RC-135, instead of developing a Joint European ELINT/SIGNT aircraft based on an Airbus design?

The USAF plans to keep the KC-135/RC-135 is service for another thirty maybe even forty years, they have a huge fleet and the maintenance to support it alongside the bone-yard AMARG. The KC-135 has an over engineered airframe and we have the last off the line, they are very well maintained as the Americans do a bare metal overhaul/rebuild every few years of all the airframes. In comparison to civil airline types they are low cycle and well understood in respect of fatigue. Our RC-135 will have far lower hours the the USAF examples, the US examples built up huge hours during the Vietnam war but the US has no need to replace for the long term.
The RAF has full USAF spec RC-135 with a few unique UK only boxes and participation in the development of the type in general meaning we get the Americans to pay for costly development and integration stuff.
The electronics inside the RC-135 are rather hot, the gloss white upper helps maintain internal temperatures at a reasonable level. A different colour would involve certifying it and that costs money that could be better spent elsewhere. The Daily Fail tried to raise a stink over it but frankly it is a very good idea to stick to the US colours, they look very nice and similar to the old transport command colours. Also as pointed out the letter font is proper and not the PR type driven mess that the rest of the fleet has to suffer.
Frankly ZZ664 looks really handsome in the grey white gloss IMHO.
