I don’t know the reports said GE F414 IN. May not be EPE.

Ain’t the MK2 design freezed won’t the EPE need bigger intakes than vanilla 414 ?

GE says EPE is the exact same size as a normal 414, and Gripen NG design team says Gripen inlets need minimum redesign (some sources claimed that width of the inlet need to be increased by only 1 inch). In my opinion, atleast the naval STOBAR version should be fitted with EPE to take up as much load as possible. 414 EPE offers almost 50% more thrust than 404. (although it will make the task of Kaveri Snecma team to please the IAF top brass more difficult)

A bulk of confusion is happening because the DRDO project has the same name “Arudhra”

    IAF to induct medium-power radars

The Electronics and Radar Development Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) too is developing an indigenous medium-power radar with the same name.

So yet again Isreali route was required for aa AESA radar. Its rather disturbing to see that even after getting the Greenpine years ago, India have not yet progressed on radar tech. Anyway Gujarat badly needed a good radar coverage and hope they will be installing enough of these in the region. The Armed forces biggest headache was & will be to protect the refineries in the event of hostilities.

can anyone provide the current status of the AESA t/r module development & the progress?

India got the Greenpine barely in 2005, developed its own (allegedly) more powerful version “Swordfish” by 2010, and is now in the process of scaling the technology. Its ok to buy proven stuff till your homegrown systems mature.

I agree with most of what you except few….

But what we need to understand is that the large refineries came up in Gujarat after the 1971 war and the decades those passed was peaceful. But the years ahead are going to be different. Its good to be optimistic that Pakistani cruise missiles/BMs will bypass these. πŸ˜‰ But its always good to be realistic and not to put all eggs in a basket!

    OT:-
Actually blowing up the reliance refinery will not affect Indian market one single bit, a massive chunk of refined product is exported(hence it is so close to Kandla Port, both for accepting crude and exporting finished products). It is like a back office for Europe’s petroleum industry, where old refineries are not so efficient and setting up new ones or expanding the old ones is a pain due to strict environmental laws. Gujarat also has the minimum distance from Gulf states. The refining capacity in India exceeds the demand by a huge margin.

    Hmm…so it could be 2084 after all….
    http://www.iai.co.il/sip_storage/FILES/9/38029.pdf
says air det. range of 256 nm..which is much more than 300 kms[although the export version will be downgraded in all probability] and max target of 1200!
so this is interesting eh and much needed too..

by the way aroor also changed the heading of his article from “indigenous” to “israel-built” πŸ˜€

    Das for Pak-Fa ?

I can’t understand the translation. Can this system be retrofitted to legacy flankers ? Is it gonna be there on Su-35 and Su-27 BM ?

Why would ISraelis be Present Unless !!!!

    My Thoery : –

Original project sanctioned in 2008 ran into trouble so they added some back end stuff to an Israeli radar and made it their own.

or maybe they decided to license produce the radar in India ?

really einstein ? πŸ˜€ I wonder why are they calling it arudhra when it is (as you claim) the EL/M-2084 ?

this looks same as the arudhra to you ?

rayrubik, it’s our old BSmaster prasun sengupta saying it’s israeli, we know what his credibility is. arudhra is a separate program from the radars ordered from israel.

If Prasun Sengupta says its Israeli, then its definitely Indian :p

There is some confusion about this radar.
Some sources say its from LRDE and some say an Israeli origin.
Now from Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence Report – May 2010
it said we were acquiring 15 medium power radars from Israel and 8 from DRDO.
Now I have not been able to identify which Israeli (Rafael ? ELta?) radar we are acquiring:confused: and also not been able to find anything regarding the origins of Arudhra from any israeli source.
Here is another picture from Outlook

Too much confusion on this one.
Israeli medium-power radar to be commissioned in Gujarat this week

IAF Beefs up Network-Centric Operations, Installs New Radars along Gujarat

The state-of-the-art radar, Arudhra, is being inducted towards strengthening the air defence in the Saurashtra-Kutch of Gujarat. Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik, will do the honours and induct the β€˜Arudhra’ medium-power radar developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE) of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the official said.

Can anyone take a shot at the power output of the radar by looking at the cooling array on the right side of the picture ?

Something to put a spanner in the works…

Tellis: US fighters lost MMRCA contract due to technical faults.

Both US bids for a major Indian Air Force fighter contract lost because of technical faults – not US export control policies or corruption in New Dehli, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace scholar Ashley Tellis said in an interview.

    http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2011/06/03/357566/tellis-us-fighters-lost-mmrca-contract-due-to-technical.html

Lack of maneuverability ? seriously ? Why is Gripen out then ? IAF sure does train hard in wvr but i doubt if they would have given wvr performance preference over bvr. With all due respect to ashley tellis, i would prefer the diplomatic neutrality argument over this argument anyday.

Like R-40, Astra is a BVR IR guided missile.

Unlike R-40, Astra does not possess a huge warhead for killing supersonic B-70 bombers or huge, archaic 1960s vintage guidance electronics package.

Instead, Astra’s small warhead appears to be sized to defeat tactical airplanes and modern electronics shrink the size of the guidance package allowing use of a smaller aerodynamically efficient missile airframe and motor.

But the article contains inadequate information on missile speed, trajectory shaping (or not), midcourse corrections, sensor focal plane array size, and other stuff we like to see in an aviation enthusiasts’ forum.

Astra vs Mica IR anyone? Challenge, challenge…Hello Bueller?…anyone out there?

Indian motor with R-77 seeker, till indian seeker comes online.

French A/c was booted out in the first phase and then it came back after French interviened. ????

Just a rumor. Rafale was overall a decent performer. Overall it was a very tough contest between Gripen, SH, Rafale and Typhoon. SH couldn’t perform as well at Leh airforce base due to its rather “graceful” flight.

It would take another wikileaks to bring out the complete truth of evaluations.

EF is already obsolescent and short of funds, Rafale already has a new version in the pipe (2012 entry into service) and the French DGA is looking past 2020 :

    Sir,
If Rafale and Typhoon cleared IAF evals… that means

Mig-35, F-16, Gripen, SH are definitely obsolete as Typhoon is,

Rafale is the only decent non fifth gen in the market… RAFALE STRONGGG !!! FTW !!

PS : No offence to what rafale is capable of, its a nice bird, but the fans would go to all limits to write off EF
