It cannot be slip of tongue ,it poor piece of journalism , Aura and AMCA are two different projects
It could be possible to integrate some UAV like features on fighters a decade from now (F-35B has an auto land feature and it is cutting edge). Right now there are several projects and simulations attempting auto take off and auto landing for UAV’s and we may see a few of them materialize by the middle of this decade. The ability to develop AI which can handle FBW of manned aircraft for take off and landing is, in my opinion, more than a decade away.
PS: The idea of converting thousands of near scrap f-16’s into a flying swarm of UAV’s each carrying a insane load of weapons, integrated by a common AI is scary. The sheer power of coordinated radar scanning by the swarm and data fusion by several IRST’s would be enough to expose any signature black holes (5th gens). It is completely possible with technology available today, all it needs is development of a suitable AI.
Slip of tongue maybe, but iaf officer mentions in one liner that amca will be a ucav. Juicey just hope they get a decent project team.
Link ?
Wow, where is that picture taken?
The Mi-28 looks good in grey.
On second thought could this be the Mi-28 undergoing trials in India? It would explain the colour.
The nearly overhead strong summer sun and dry dusty background suggests that this bird might be in India. But why paint it in IAF grey so as to not attract attention and then publish pictures on the net ?
Hmm, must be nice for the Indian AF – choice bet Rafale and Tiffy, real nice. Lucky they don’t have to be choosing between the Shornet and the Viper! That would have been crummy!
In any case, reading the tea leaves – the biggest question is – has the M2K upgrade gone through? IF it has, imvho, the Rafale gets the boot, and the Tiffy wins the race. IF the M2k deal has not yet been signed, the Tiffy is probly going to lose.
I fully expect Dassault/France to offer some kind of package deal – Rafale + M2k upg to make it more lucrative. Perhaps we may hear more of the UAE M2ks in this connection as well. INtersting times…
USS.
Actually, Dassault’s offer to give discounts on M2K if Rafale is selected is being seen more as a stick rather than a carrot. Although French munitions are terribly expensive, the winner will most likely use Indian missiles and LGB’s. It would be interesting to see how IAF and MoD are going to calculate lifetimes costs. Probably the financial models used for the evaluation will never be made public to anyone other than the vendors, but the case seems too strong in the favor of Rafale. This is a deal for Dassault to lose now, if they lose this one, probably some heads will roll in Dassault management.
Besides, Rafale-M argument isn’t that strong, considering that by 2025, IN would get AMCA. If Rafele-M is included, then 4 different type of aircraft for carriers will make up for a logistical nightmare worse than what IAF faces today. This is not considering the possibility that AURA might be considered for naval role by then. In all possibility, a catobar carrier would be launched keeping AMCA timeline in mind.
How does ´roping in SAAB´ more count as ´doing it on your own´ vs. ´roping in MiG, TsAAGI, Salyut, Saturn, Tikhomirov, etc´?
Not as in a major partner, but more like a consultant on the lines of KFX for korea and EADS for NLCA.
Anyways, going on the assumption there is any substance behind this story ;),
Russian involvement is doubtful. Even if it were true, it would feature Russian engines, radar and avionics for Russsian version and Indian engines, radar and avionics for Indian version. Basically the two may be only similar in appearance and totally different on the inside.
But who knows if it´s for real, I can equally see the Snecma-Kaveri project developing to something that meets the requirements, if not spectacularly, adequately…
Snecma-Kaveri GTX-K10 is expected to deliver 90-95 Kn by 2015-16. The goalposts for further co development are rather obscure. It is totally within the abilities of Russia to pimp up RD-93 to upto 95-100 KN by 2016 using materials from 117. Twin 95 KN engines would make it comparable to JSF in terms of thrust. From there on it depends how “light” do they want it to be.
i don’t want to bang on about this, but it goes against everything i have come to understand….
and any other evidence? is this just a poke at one of the MMRCA candidates?
I don’t think anyone should be amazed at it. South asian forces have until recently not operated AWACS. Their trainings and doctrines have had a large proportion of WVR combat. Given the fact that at least some squadrons, if not all, spend as much time in air as NATO forces, its no surprise they are damn good at WVR.
about putting all the eggs into one basket:
air supériority:
PAK-FA, Su-30Mki, LCA, M2k, Mig-29
Ground attack
Pak-FA, Su-30Mki, LCA, M2k, Mig-29, Jaguar, Mig-27
if i were india, i wouldn’t want to operate the same aircraft on my carriers for the Navy as the Airforce would have for the MMRCA….
I personally think its an oversimplification to say that what is good for the airforce is good for the navy. Maybe in France, but not in the UK, and not in the US.
Unfortunately true for IN. The two aircraft to enter service in IN are already operated by IAF 🙂
IAF is getting serious on Tejas FOC. Apparently there are 2-3 sorties a day. Anyone in bangalore near HAL area who might have a chance to snap a few pictures ?
A more confusing report from flightglobal
Does India want yet another stealth fighter?
Now the Indian aerospace and defence press reports Indian Air Marshall PV Naik is in talks with Russia about a lightweight stealth fighter.
It’s not clear if Naik is simply discussing a stealth fighter lighter than FGFA; if so, it is perhaps an invitation for Russia to join India’s ongoing AMCA project.
This article too traces back to brahmand
The JF-17 design is supposed to drastically cut the man-hours of time needed to keep it airborne compared to MiG-21. It’s fuel consumption will increase, but cutting cutting man-hours is more important in the broad scope of factors. Why do people keep insisting a small fighter like JF-17 will be relatively expensive? The claim is unsubstantiated.
JF-17 is probably the cheapest light fighter in market right now. There may be doubts about what it is capable of, but definitely no doubts that it is the cheapest of all.
Another report ..russian source this time..
http://www.aviaport.ru/digest/2011/05/30/216410.html
…………
medal64..I think if this happens it will be similar to FGFA…Indian mod for Russian a/c.Raises questions about the future of Indian AMCA though…btw it says development of light fighter for IAF ( and export )..do Russia have any plans for a fifth gen light fighter as a replacemnet for the various types in russian service?
this report quotes brahmand as well, and brahmand quotes, well no one :p Indians have an interest in replacing Jaguars, Mig 27’s and M2k around 2025-30 and put new birds on 2-3 large carriers ( that puts it to roughly 300-350 units for airforce and 100-180 for navy). The number of airframes required in India are enough to go for a medium sized fifth gen (aka AMCA).
Russians, at least officially, have not acknowledged the need for a medium sized fifth gen, as of now.
Angela Merkel is in India and putting pressure on Indians to buy the Typhoon and Sarkozy does the same. The EADS belongs 30% to FRANCE and 46% of Dassault belongs to EADS which makes RAFALE and TYPHOON brother and sister. India should buy both fighters to keep everyone happy.
not fighters, but we buy subs, artillery, helicopters and transport aircrafts and re fuelers too 😛
Its an offset- and as long as its related to the defence industry, it is considered ok. What might not be ok is to try to get a civilian project to be a part of the defence offsets.
OK, so they could have gotten away in MMRCA tender by giving offsets for artillery and helicopters ? i doubt it
Now this is something that will make the offsets part of the C-17 deal worth it !
The other half of the offsets, according to the proposal, would be shared between Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd for training and maintenance for the aircraft, Tata Consultancy Services for defence strategic communication systems and Defence Land Systems — a joint venture between Mahindra Group and BAE Systems — for armoured vehicles.
btw how do armored vehicles feature in C-17 deal ?
Why is the serviceability of the allmost brand new Flankers so poor? Lack of spareparts? (Same problem India has had/has)?
India has less problem with flankers but a hell lot of more with Mig. Buying a flanker is cheap, maintaining and keeping it battle ready is expensive.
