Maybe it was worth it, maybe it will reduce terrorism. But maybe tomorrow, or the next day, or in 6 months time, some suicidal maniac will walk into a crowded shopping centre, football stadium or school with twenty or thirty pounds of explosive strapped to them and leaving behind their video saying how they only did it to avenge the death of Osama Bin Laden. Wonder whether we’d think it was worth it then?

Did not know the Su-30 was used in such a role.
The area in question is pretty inaccessible and is right now getting drenched in sleet and snow. They might have used the Litening targeting pod to scan a large area and identified the wreckage.
QB , he was 5 km from Pak military academy at kakul..
according to trusted sources he was maybe an instructor there..:D
Nope, his house was less than 700 meters from the academy.
Its funny, a very tall Arab guy moves into your neighborhood with his 6 wives a few kids, some bodyguards, in a mansion like house in a country where people actually know their neighbors, and the city where he choses to build his post retirement mansion happens to be sprawling with dudes being trained to clean out scum like him. Very Machiavellian indeed ๐

I’m not sure. It was precedented before with Su-30MKI – HAL assembled MKI kit was 40% cheaper than the same machine made by IAPO in Irkutsk. But still we don’t see HAL assembling MKMs or MKAs..
I am sure the Russian workers would be out shouting “They took our jobs!!” in Russian if IAPO would have outsourced their assembling work to HAL :p
HAL assembles MKI as a part of ToT, not outsourcing ๐
Osama Bin Laden dead!

Helicopters were used in the attack on fortified compound in Pakistan.
Looks like Pakistan ISI are going to have to do some fast talking.
Living 700 meters from Pakistans premier military academy in a city where lots of Pak army officials chose to retire, at a place not too far from either their capital or their side of Kashmir ๐ We’ll have to wait and see what ISI’s official version is
If they knew where he was, given their history of shrew negotiations, they could have exchanged him for at least a squadron of spanking new f-16’s ๐
largest private yard (no wonder MoD does not want/is reserved in building Naval ships there)
……….Now if the IN ships & service are shifted there, it would be good for adversary as taking out the yard will mean a heavy blow to the Western Naval fleet ships which may have docked there or are under construction. I think it is the promary reason why MoD is not going ahead with any Naval orders there.
JMT
The primary shipyards for Naval orders are still going to be Cochin shipyard, Mazhgaon Docks and Vizag for many years to come, even after the Ruia family shipyard comes into operation. Having the capacity to make ships upto 120,000 tonnes displacement doesn’t mean GoI will order them to make a super carrier.
Anyone have any news on why the SITARA has crashed?
IJT crashes for the third time in 4 years
HAL chairman, Ashok Nayak, said that during the test flight, the pilots may have performed an โunintended difficultโ manoeuvre โand could not recover from it due to which they lost control and ejected.โ
A lot of mistakes was made by the E-3 controlers due to funny aksent by MKI pilots etc..
And still the MKI made a good figure against all the other net sentric aircraft in Red Flag.
Hardly enough to draw ANY conclusion on MKI and Mig-29 network sentric capability.
Spot on. The first Phalcon didn’t come until June 2009. IAF had high casualties at Red Flag in first couple of encounters waiting for the AWACS operator’s IFF confirmation. They later said to themselves “screw it” and started blasting away at anything that they suspected to be hostile, and still ended up with fratricide levels comparable to others.
The Aesa radar could have been a little nightmare for the IAF to get into operational service.
eh ? any known issues with Zhuk-AE ?
is this really going to be another tedious unsourced Typhoon v Rafale diatribe?
We should set some sort of operating rules for this debate because if the last stage of the competition is anything to go by, its going to be a long wait for a winner….
when is the final selection due?
as somebody said on another board, it says a lot of the Indians that they have selected two new designs in the medium category and not settled for a rehash of a 1970s design.
Yes it will be ๐ . Be rest assured that fanboys from 4 nations will cite corruption and politics as the reason for final choice of the winner. The final selection is due anytime in July.
It amuses me that, if this had been a contract for the US military, the losing US competitor would have immediately rolled out the lawyers and put a halt to the whole process. As it’s not a US contract, they’ve both effectively slunk away with their tails between their legs. Hmm, maybe US isn’t neccesarily the best after all, for all that certain companies (and not a few fanboys) would have the world believe? If either are dumb enough to go legal on the Indians, what will the Indians tell them to go forth and do?
As a Brit I’d like the Typhoon to win but the Rafale is just as good IMHO. Good on you India :).
In India, you don’t even need to go to a court to stop a defense deal, ever since the Bofors 155mm gun fiasco, all you need to do to stop a defense deal is to forge some documents alleging corruption and the MoD will immediately freeze the procurement process (check out the M777 light artillery story). Looking at the magnitude of this deal, the media interest in it and one of the most rigorous try outs ever in defense deals, IAF’s top brass’ situation is worse than a one legged tap dancer in a minefield, one wrong step and boom its over.
Coming to viper and SH, IMO viper’s golden era is coming to an end. There is nothing that a viper can do which the Euro canards can’t do better. For me, SH’s exclusion was a big disappointment, it had a lot of good things going on for it, low RCS, EW capabilities, one of the best radars, “silent hornet” modifications, an upgraded EPE engine, one of the best ground attack capabilities, large radius of operation and large amount of ammunition it can carry. I think it might have scored pretty low at trials held at Leh, where it might have had significant problems in taking off in a short distance in the thin summer air. It may not be as bad an aircraft euro fanboys will now make out to be, it just might be the case that IAF’s requirement were very different from USN and RAAF.
GoI is sleeping or getting bogged down by the Gujarathi fora. Mistakes gets repeating itself.
1) creating the largest or one of the largest refineries in Gujrat.
2) largest private yard (no wonder MoD does not want/is reserved in building Naval ships there)
3) And now aerospace (hope it is seperate from any Nataional significance or strategic value)Any war on the western front will see the refineries being the target and the whole of North getting cut-off of vital supplies. Many had criticised the refiniers being setup there, but the Reliance political clout finally made their way.
Now if the IN ships & service are shifted there, it would be good for adversary as taking out the yard will mean a heavy blow to the Western Naval fleet ships which may have docked there or are under construction. I think it is the promary reason why MoD is not going ahead with any Naval orders there.JMT
Its an industry friendly state, skilled labor, entrepreneurial native population, friendly for immigrant workers, short distance from northern states ( for oil and gas pipelines), presence of thousands of SME’s needed as ancillary units….. i can go on and on, its just like saying why build so much infrastructure on pacific coast in China where in case of war Taiwan will like to blow it up.
I agree with your sentiment that it would be under risk, but you cannot dictate business groups on security alone.
No problem, it will then get down to who have the better pilots & tactics. Moreover, along the Western front, MiG-29s represent the “iron curtain” that any probable PAF Rafale might need to breach and MIG-29UPGs can pretty well be able to hold themselves against any Rafale.
(I’m waiting to see the IN MiG-29K going up against the IAF Rafales in the future and I won’t be surprised if the “Russian beasts” wipe the floor with the “French Beauties” like they did back in the 80s.)In addition to that its better to have one entity controlling the a/c rather than having 4-different heads that head in every different direction possible. Also, the Frenchies won’t block any spares like the Brits. Its also better to have something to fight with…
I am sure if it were the case Mig-35 would have been the top performer of MMRCA try outs. Mig-29 was a great aeronautical design and had a lot of potential if it had better engines and avionics. Sadly it could never live up to its hype. I have not yet seen a single IAF Mig-29 with r-77, because its radar is not capable enough to utilize the range of r77. Hopefully this should change with upgrades.
because they need a quick design to build so they can attack Japan NOW, not in the future
Its not as if when they purchased the varyag they wanted to scrap it, melt it and make cars, AFAIK it was always meant to be studied and converted into at least a training ship. From the date of purchase that gives us around 12 years if I am not wrong. Which means roughly 8 years to modify an existing design and fly the first prototype and 4 years to churn out some production prototypes for rapid testing.
Lets take a look at modification of aircrafts to suit the naval role which weren’t originally intended to be carrier borne. Both Su 33 and Mig 29k project started roughly around 1982, Su 33 made its first flight by 1985, Mig 29k made its first flight by 1988 (source: wiki). Tejas had its first flight in 2003, following which IN requested a naval variant which came out in 2010 in the form of naval trainer variant.
So we have all 3 categories of Stobar naval aricraft; light, medium and heavy all developed in less than 8 years. Even SAAB and EADS say they can bring out a naval variant in a “short” time period (lets just believe what they say with a pinch of salt). So if the Chinese wanted to navalise a J-10 they could have easily done it within the time frame and i am sure they would have seriously considered it.
Now the differences between a naval version and the standard version of an aircraft that i can think of are mainly :
1. Low Landing speed and excellent low speed handling characteristics.
2. A small or a drooping nose in case the visibility of landing deck is not excellent from the cockpit.
3. A strengthened airframe to take on the brutal landings.
(you can add more, i am sure i must have missed out a few)
I believe these modifications, at least the last 2, could have been easily carried out by Chinese in a very short time. Now lets see the reasons why J-10 might not have been considered for naval operations. Low thrust weight ratio is what i can think of for one. Maybe high landing and take off speed for another. Can anyone think of anything else ?
