    [QUOTE=Taygibay;1737565]@ Boom, belated answer, sorry!

Just about anything from R&D and production of the engines
and AESA to setting up a larger plant faster?

Money helps, but right now PAK-FA project is getting all the funds it can burn.
Cliche’ Alert: you can’t expect 9 pregnant women to deliver a baby in a month.

I do believe this has been answered by numerous
“raised eyebrows” posts. I am sorry mate but the
TEJAS is not comparable to the GRIPEN NG. Your
vital project has fulfilled its role of teaching the
industry how to design and produce a modern jet.
That expertise could have been used on making
the NG in India as Junior partners to SAAB as NG
is not in production yet and then as Senior partner
    on the AMCA.

No its not. Doesn’t mean mark 2 can’t be. Gripen NG is not made up of phoenix ash and magic potions that cannot be matched up by continuing to develop Tejas. The only thing going for Gripen NG against Tejas is that Gripen NG offers all those capabilities NOW, not 5 years down the line.

somehow i get the feeling that Gripen-Tejas thing is going to generate as many flame wars as Flanker-Eagle, Viper-Fulcrum, and Typhoon-Rafael.

There’s been one case (Morocco) of F-16 being bought in place of F-16, & given the abysmal mismanagement of the competing Rafale sales campaigns, I think MiG-15s might have been selected ahead of Rafales in that case. That’s also the only case I know of where an F-16 variant other than F-16E (Block 60) or derivatives competed with either Rafale or Typhoon – & F-16E has always been eliminated from those competitions.

True. Doesn’t negate the fact that the performance is still good enough to be called for try outs. To be fair to f-16 it has had probably the longest and the most glorious chapter in military aviation and even the older airframes with modern upgrades pack quite a punch.

A pure delta can not ever be as agile as one with canards, so they can stop trying

I didn’t say they were trying to do that :p , its the other capabilities of Gripen NG that they are trying to match :diablo: and they will 🙂 :dev2:

Cant say the result is not welcomed by some..

Dont understand comparison of the NG to the LCA mark II or not.

They “PLAN” to make the MkII as capable as NG, that means there is work to be done on sensor fusion, data links and to replace El 2032 processor with a home grown one which has to be at least as capable as 2032 if not more, and all of these things have been in the works for a while, which means it can be done.

To say that there is parity between a Block 52+ F 16 & Rafale F3 or Typhoon T2B with AESA is absurd.

    Block 60 may be

If its a fairly modernized f-16, it needs to be respected. If its an f-16 with friendly awacs and tanker support in a friendly IADS, you should respect it even more. If its flown by the best pilots of an air force which has an overall respectable level of training, doctrine and tactics, it can cause enough damage to slow down enemy advance even against overwhelming odds. There is a reason why it is a gold standard for any multirole aircraft designed after it, and despite being the best thing to be invented since sliced bread, rafale and typhoon often have to compete with f-16’s for sales.

Btw I have been hearing about f-16 sales and up-gradation of existing airframes for the past couple of years, how many new frames have been ordered and how many older ones have been upgraded ?

What success in Bulgaria, Romania & Slovakia? And how did not using European parts cost them Poland? The Poles bought F-16! Brazil still isn’t decided.

EJ200 in Gripen C/D means the C/D would have had to be a bigger upgrade. C/D used the RM12, same as A/B. Only got a new engine for NG.

    SU-35 back in Brazil F-X

I suppose this should make F-X even more interesting 🙂

It’s great that the downselect appears apolitical, though CISMOA (and, to some extent, wikileaks) probably defeated the yanks. SAAB’s new R&D centre in India is unlikely to be some sort of glorified theme park and will likely participate in AMCA. An uprated EJ-200 would be a good fall-back option for the AMCA- avoiding the Tejas debacle.

Storm Shadow will go some way in addressing (any) concerns the IAF may have had regarding Typhoon’s imature/maturing A2G capabilities, and as the French will (yet again) defeat themselves- Typhoon it is! (…and I’m very happy!!).

    well everyone gets a share of indian defence pie;
Russians get MKI, PAK-FA, Mig-29 Upgrade, MTA, Brahmos
    Americans get C-130 and C-17’s
French get scorpenes and M2k upgrades
    Britons got HAWKS
Germans still haven’t got anything and neither have Swedes,

So i suppose Britain and Germany get M-MRCA, and Swedes get lots of money on AMCA consultancy.

That makes every supplier happy 😛

    very naiis!

a potential high seas battle between J-15s and IN Rafales and MiG-29K.. that would be interesting.

If the chinese can fit a lraam on this baby before indians can fit meteor on tejas-n and mig-29k, the battle can be pretty one sided, unless of course indians do it first.

I wonder if NATO will ever run out of letters for all these Flanker variants :p

I mean seriously, why make an aircraft that has “only a passing resemblance to su-33 and was conceptualized way back in early 80’s and is a totally different aircraft” when they have proven themselves to be capable of making complex aircrafts as J-20. Even though anyone with an anti-china bent believes that j-10 a rip-off, there are enough design differences to inspire confidence among chinese nationalists, and with J-20 i was convinced that chinese designers have come of age, hence the disappointment with j-15

One thing for certain is that there won’t be problems identifying the difference between aircraft from the PAF and IAF. Future PAF aircraft will stick to the conventional wing layouts while the IAF is going for delta wings.

not if PAF gets J-10, canards and delta wings, i suppose i have seen that somewhere…

    http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2011/04/27/356054/saab-dropped-from-indian-fighter-deal-shortlist.html

    The Gripen has been dropped.

So has the Super Viper, Super Hornet and Super Fulcrum.

    http://www.hindustantimes.com/News-Feed/newdelhi/India-says-no-to-US-fighter-planes/Article1-690522.aspx

Now its down to the Typhoon and the Rafale!

Either of super hornet and gripen or even the viper could have been at number 3, but then the 3rd best performer could have been the lowest bidder, and that would have seriously messed up all the ToT aspirations. By keeping only the top 2 performers they have ensured that ToT happens.

This really isn’t a navalized J-11B at all. This is an Su-33 with modern avionics and electronics system for the most part. It’s based off a prototype Su-33 purchased from the Ukraine. Most Chinese aviation forums are pointing out the electronics, radar, and weapons systems though were most likely all Chinese and far newer than the circa 1980’s equipment of the Russian Su-33.

I know that. i just didn’t want to start a flame war :diablo:. Lets not call a spade a spade, rather call it J-15 or whatever designation is allotted to it.

    A navalized J-20, perhaps ?

As an aviation enthusiast, I am a little disappointed with J-15. Of course we had been hearing rumors for years regarding an aircraft that has “only a passing resemblance to su-33 and was conceptualized way back in early 80’s and is a totally different aircraft” but i expected the first chinese naval fighter to be based on j-10 rather than j-11. Modifying J-10 for naval use might had made a point about their aircraft designing abilities.
