    Rii,
Shiv Aroor is a defence enthusiast like most of us, but with a press pass. If Indian MoD wasn’t so niggardly with PR pictures, press releases, product development cycles and R&D works, the mainstream reporting on defence would be much better.

All three are quite ugly, but workmanlike in appearance.

    A-7 looks like X-32 ‘Monica’s father πŸ™‚

S Band AEW&C: Astra a partner, expects orders soon, has supplied 3 units of TR module array (this can either mean 3 full scale arrays or 3 units of the series production type; we know a full scale LSTAR with 1240-1280 modules already exists).

    1244 to be exact πŸ™‚

Does that link mention BEL tendering the work? That document BTW is a great find.

    Yes, from the document :-

This is how it works: The Indian armed forces express the requirement of a new technology / product to DRDO, which in turn undertakes the responsibility of designing and developing the product. Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) takes the responsibility of production. Bids are invited
from players to participate in the design and development of the sub-systems as per the specification of the product. Players are paid for the prototype developed with margins dependent on the competitive bidding. Once the product is developed and a prototype is approved by the respective armed forces, bids are invited for commercial production or it can be given to the player that designed. The bids are evaluated first on technical strength; the
remaining players then compete on cost. Same private players who were involved in the design and development of the sub-components hold a good chance of winning the commercial order because 1) the prototype made by them has already been approved by user, and 2) their knowledge about the technology has already been proven.

    They are basically sub vendors.

Is the plan to use Kaveri still or move on to something more ambitious?

    EDIT: I mean for MCA.

Pretty much yes, Kaveri would be flight tested on Tejas early 2014 and hopefully AURA by 2015. Any further upgrades or blocks of Kaveri would have to be roughly the same dimensions as the existing version and be able to replace Ge 404 in MLU for Tejas.

Twower visited Ivanovo, flew on A-50U. More pics + video coming, so far posted this:

Pretty shocking that MOD allowed him to even go on the plane, let alone photograph it.

At least they turned off the monitors (or at least edited them).

PS : I wants that keyboardzzz.

Thanks for that link Twinblade ! While the guy interviewing him pronounced AESA funnily, the gist of the interview confirms a lot of things that we weren’t fully sure about..it’s good to know that LRDE has managed to get a T/R module fabricated and working in-house and that BEL will be manufacturing those in India itself for the Tejas Mk2.

BEL tendered that work to Astra microwave. Check out the link I posted earlier on Astra microwave, it has many more details.

Hi Twinblade, thanks for the link. I was looking particularly for more detail and/or substantiation of the following claims made here:

The only publication to substantiate this link is this book :-

    http://books.google.co.in/books?id=UszFlttyB0AC&pg=PA204&lpg=PA204&dq=mirage+2000+r-27&source=bl&ots=fjT0axrbOR&sig=cx9DZokSX4QD6tROqgOuHkfVlC8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Ss_qT9esEcexrAfRq63VBQ&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=mirage%202000%20r-27&f=true

In an effort to simplify logistics, the IAF has successfully integrated western missiles with its Soviet designed aircraft and vice versa. Under the first such program, MiG-21s were retrofitted with a capability to launch the Magic II AAM. More recently, MiG-29s have been adapted to carry the Super-530D. Integrating Soviet missiles with the Mirage 2000s proved more of a challenge, but was overcome by the mid-1990s. Indeed Mirage 2000s on missions over Kargil in the summer of 1999 were carrying R-73 AAM. The Mirage 2000 is also capable of deploying the R-27 AAM. It is more than likely that once the R-77 enters service in quantity, it will be integrated with the Mirage 2000

^^ In both the links the author claims that MiG-29’s were adapted to fire Super 530D and Magic 2 and Mirage 2000 were carrying out tests with R-27, R-73 R-60.

Anyone know offhand of any reliably sourced and preferably detailed information regarding (1) the effects of US sanctions on LCA/Tejas or (2) IAF’s experience with Mirage 2k and Dassault relating to the Kargil conflict? Am researching for an essay on the political and geopolitical aspects of MMRCA.

    Hrm, fair enough. Cheers.

For (2) this is the most comprehensive link on mirage 2000 at Kargil.

Indian Air Force take delivery of Global 5000

    http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/6606/indianafglobal.jpg

The Indian Air Force have taken delivery of a Global 5000 from Bombardier, from an order originally destined for a Maltese customer.
Arriving at Shannon on Sunday night from St. Louis Downtown, msn 9424 / C-GHVB stayed the night before departing to Tel Aviv the next morning.

Indian Air Force Global 5000 on delivery through Shannon. Photo copyright Malcolm Nason
It’s unclear if the aircraft is destined for some work with Israel Aerospace Industries in Tel Aviv before final delivery, but it is understood that the Indians have been shopping for a system similar to the Raytheon developed Global Express based Airborne Stand-Off Radar (ASTOR) system deployed by the UK’s Royal Air Force recently in Afghanistan.

^^ While this link says that the bombardiers might be used for airborne stand off radar, an earlier Hindustan Times report said that it is meant to replace older RAW assets (for which a global RFI has been issued).
