So there are not such conclusion to expect from this. The only thing certain WOULD be that a controlled descent (ascertained by the extended position of the flap) was done by an Inexperienced pilot. This would be a revolutionary conclusion by itself but still inline with the theory of an incapacitated flight crew and unknown numbers of survivors.

An interesting idea, but it would have to be a pretty experienced pilot to be able to know how to operate the flaps. I’m assuming that by now, if any other passengers on board had flying experience, it would have been flagged up – certainly back when it was thought the plane had been hijacked. It could have been a flight attendant perhaps – I know if I had that role I would learn how to land a plane in an emergency. If they could do that, however, surely they could have been able to change the flight path and head for land, rather than into the middle of nowhere.

The recent discovery of burned parts and mention of batteries is also interesting, but any fire bad enough to damage the fuselage would have surely downed the plane far earlier than its apparent fuel-expiry crash. I would suspect this damage was caused in the crash or even afterwards (suggestion on one news source, they might have been burned on a beach bonfire by locals).

A double-bill at the cinema and Channel 4 last night:

    Drive Nicolas Winding Refn
Gorgeous art-house take on the modern crime film, beautifully directed driving scenes and an excellent kick-in-the-teeth storyline combine with some perfect acting from Ryan Gosling that suits the film perfectly.

    Melancholia Lars Von Trier
As you would expect from the eccentric Dane, this film is incredible but very hard to watch – Von Trier has represented depression so accurately both for Justine (an amazingly good performance from Ms. Dunst) and its effect on those around her. Top notch cast and a sequence that I would without reservation list as one of the top 5 closing shots of all time and one that really needs to be seen in the cinema to have its full power.

    Star Trek – J.J. Abrams
While I enjoy the television series (TOS and TNG) I have no real love for them, so this did not seem to me like the sacrilege that some accused it of (and I was amused by the alternate time-stream message that could instantly counter any arguments from hardcore fans). I found it an enjoyable film although let down by Abrams’ ADHD direction and the unnecessary additional ‘threats’ (Scotty getting beamed into the pipes and the snow monsters for example) that added nothing to the story.

    A Fistful of Dollars

My first viewing. A great start to the Dollars trilogy and, according to my friend Omer, they get better and better….

If you enjoy them, my review site has over 60 other Spaghetti Westerns you might want to check out – Spaghetti Western guide

We visited the graves last year, they are in a civilian cemetery near where he crashed:

As Arthur says, it landed in Manchester so what’s your point?

Considering the weather he really should not have risked such a landing attempt. That would be my point.

Is this yet another case of pilots being pushed by commercial pressures to make risky landings rather than expensive go-arounds and diverts?

Solid pics, love the A380 flypast, what an odd juxtaposition.

Interesting result there, I wouldn’t have expected a prison term (really, our justice system just seems so arbitrary, but let us not discuss this here :diablo:).

Of course the sentence is for lying to court rather than specifically for claiming to be in the military.

I went to the show earlier this year and it is well worth attending, can’t make it this time but it is highly recommendable. Where else can you stand ear-splittingly close to an EE Lightning on full afterburn?

I wonder if there will be a few surprise overflights as well:

I would imagine that tourism would be a big concern for the new government once other things are sorted out, lots of revenue potential there that Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt have done pretty well out of. Getting a museum together with this plane could certainly attract a few crowds.
