Absolutely, and like I said, I have no experience in these matters. It’s not my field, I’m simply trying my best because I have been doing a story on Austeen published in a local book.

There was no body ever recovered. That’s the official story.
The Norwegians had almost the same type of uniform color as of the RAF, and beside the obvious flag on the shoulder, they also had different “wings” on the front, as seen here:

My source claimed there was no other pilots shot down over Northern Germany that day. Since 19 squadron obviously lost two pilots, I can’t say for sure where that happened and how this person are so sure that it’s not either Natta or Davidson in that grave.

No disrespect. Simply calling it a scandal to attract some views in order to get to the bottom of this 😀 Mod may change it as he pleases. I didn’t mean nothing by it in that direction. I have no clue in this type of thing, always focused on other sides of aviation history. I’m simply acting on this because some researchers asked me to – since I also have contact with Austeens family.

Were these pilots also missing over the same area? They were part of 19 squadron, Natta and Davidson. 19 squadron operated over coastal Norway and the Kattegat from what I understand. Possible any of those two could find themselves in Hamburg, which is basically a bit on the wrong side and too far north to end up in there. Or?

Well, it’s not my words saying MRES is locked up for 99 years, it was simply stated in the e-mail I got. Honestly, I have no clue. I’ve never gone into this type of research before. I would need to contact them in order to know for certain.

And of course, like Kev35 says, the man buried in that grave, marked 4th of May, may just be another airmen killed earlier on, later found and buried. A quick glance at all the losses from a logical period over Northern Germany would be interesting.

If there is no proof positive date given for the pilots death

It is proven that he died 4th of May, as people saw the plane go down, and as far as I know, no other loss were reported that day, as it was the last day of operations. I’m sitting on letters from pilots to his sister and fiance, the date is correct. He was with 126 squadron as squadron leader, flying a mission to attack German naval vessels. He was hit by U-155 as the first one going in for the attack.

    Here’s parts of the mail I was given (his English is a little off, so it’s not easy to understand what exactly he means);

Our Informaton Status about Major Arne Austeen is, that we found a grave on the War Grave Cemetery Hamburg-Ohlsdorf, the biggest British War Cemetery in northern Germany. There are buried the Missing Research & Enquiry Services also a Unknown Airmen from the 4th may 1945 and Arne Austeen is the only Missing in Action of this date.

In our Research for Nordahl Grieg we realized, that the Grave Concentration Groups doesn?t worked so correct, how we are wishing now.

The problem is, that the Missing Research & Enquiry Services Files are still closed and locked for 99 years in the archives, only the Family can become this files.

    My thoughts exactly.

Perhaps he was killed a few days previously and his remains not discovered untill the 4th ? or could it be that he was on night operations and killed the evening or night of the 3rd

I thought of this as well.

However, I need to know who I’m dealing with – giving me this information. Have to understand just how they can be so sure about this.

I didn’t call you stupid. I was simply philosophizing, throwing in a joke at the end.

Ah nevermind. Why do I bother.

I thought everyone was aware that if you “publish” a photograph on the web it runs the risk of being “stolen”. My defence against this is to only “publish” low resolution photographs and where possible ask for a credit. I have had the BBC and others ask for high resolution copies and so far never received a penny in compensation – it would be nice, but I don’t really expect it! Like probably most photographers on this Forum I am by no means a professional and am happy for someone to acknowledge occasionally that I have pictures they would like to use. As a professional technical author and translator I know very well there is little or no money to be gained from writing or photography in the vast majority of cases, hence my tiny bank account, and I work 7 days a week!

I think this sums it up quite nicely.

DCK, attitudes like yours are the reason so many don’t give a toss about the effort people put into creating photos and music.

Just because I feel a diplomatic approach is better? Mailing them asking if they could attritbute the picture accordingly rather than coming in, guns-blazing?

As was pointed out earlier by another poster with regards the BBMF, would there be an outcry to having it shipped abroad just to fly it or keep grounded in this country?

The BBMF are operating under a bit different rules than the rest. Not official rules per se though. They are meant to be the guardians of history, a crown jewel of Great Britain and her allies.

I was merely trying to point out that the utopian skies for old aircraft, (irrespective of which country that may happen to be in) are sometimes too easily overlooked when simplistic and understandable emotions are voiced.
Sometimes we have to take a step back and re-think.

Point taken, but my general feeling towards a “box with wings” is that it’s supposed to fly. The rest may others deal with as they please!

At the end of the day, the owners of any aircraft or even playstation (as used in your reply), have the absolute right to do what the hell they like with it, even if one’s own rationale does not agree with them and sees it in a totally different light.

Of course they do. But the owners themselves can’t question the fact that a Sony Playstation is manufactured to be played on and a plane is manufactured to fly. That’s the basic. What they may do with it is another thing entirely, but I reserve the right to have the opinion that a plane is supposed to fly. If it CAN fly is something entirely different.

Like I said, it’s just a misunderstanding in the approach here.

    A stupid picture?

Wow, a choice of words really gets people fuzzed up. A dilemma like this always brings up to sides. As clearly seen here.

    But, for those who likes to get involved in rethorics and details;

What I meant with “stupid picture” was not grading the “quality” of the picture. Caling a picture “stupid” in regards of “quality” doesn’t really work. How is the picture stupid exactly? Is it the plane that is stupid? Is it the angle that is stupid? Maybe it’s the photographer that is stupid? 😀

It’s sort of like calling an apple for “dumb”.

There is a bit of a crash in words there..as you can see.

I dont Appreciate my Work popping up on websites im Not aware about because for me they are my Little Joys!

Here’s the only choice you have in stopping it: Don’t post them online.

I can never understand it when people say “it’s just a stupid photo”. It’s the result of a hell of a lot of hard work on the part of the photographer and if someone steals that work then you have every right to be a bit peed off about it.

I take a lot of pictures to my friend, and I do not get worked up about it. It’s for my own personal satisfaction and hobby. If someone steals my photo I will do as previously posted, if I have the time or energy to do so. And you can call all my pictures for stupid if you will. :p

This is the internet. Copyrights have flown out the window years ago. Music, movies, pictures – the lot. You may spend your precious time fighting it, but the only choice you have to avoid these incidents is to not post them online and avoid the internet with your work all togheter.

I choose not to do so and have relaxed on my copyright feelings years ago, to avoid personal mental trouble. 😀

Yeah, be diplomatic. It’s just a picture.

Say that you’re happy they like your picture, however you would appreciate it if they ask you next time around.

Personally I wouldn’t request any money. I would simply request a link to a website I own or have my name somewhere there in case someone wanna contact me for further use of pictures.

It’s just a stupid picture. Nothing to get worked up for.

I know I wouldn’t. But people are very, very different on this issue.
