Be sure to check opening hours before you go there. 17th of May was obviously like the worst timed day ever to head over. You can also take the S33 bus from the terminal, you’re supposed to show the driver a ticket you will get off at the parking area (neighbours to the museum) but I’ve taken that bus three or four times the past months and they never check. Ergo, it’s free.

I was there on Thursday this week for a meeting with the Norwegian Spitfire Foundation. Luckily, we got to see the 88.

I doubt they have any problems with some photos posted.

Hope so Andy, we haven’t really discussed it – just some thoughts on it and how it would look on jackets and so on – and some very enthusiastic dreamy talks about how Wing Co Rolf Arne Bergs Spitfire would look flying at Legends in the future 😀

Bit optimistic on the flying part indeed.

No idea why you seem to like the film.

Saw it for the first time a couple of years back and it was absolute rubbish.

Iconic it may be. Horrid it is.

Silly XIV’s and the presentation of Baders character is absolute nonsense.

If this is going to be one of those “how dare you remake” threads I need to take a pill or something. Like a remake will somehow tarnish the old or whatever. I saw Red Tails, thought it was horrible and never watched it again. Not once did I think it destroyed the previous decent attempt at it (with Laurence Fishborne). I welcome another attempt if someone wants to try once more, with any BW 1950s movie with acting so bad it makes you feel sick.

Simon was my friend and my contact at North Weald. He was always eager to help out with anything, and took great interest in the Norwegian history of NW. He called me a few weeks ago to make arrangements for a book signing event in June that I would attend with a fellow author. He always seemed to look at me and our friendship with pride – he was excited to know me just as I was excited to know him, so happy to have such a great connection to the museum. Together, I thought, we could bring this Anglo-Norwegian cooperation forward for the next 40 years or so, perhaps even coming up with new and exciting events and ideas for the museum. A brand new generation of enthusiasts, barely 30 years old the both of us with so many years ahead – being involved with what we love the most.

Heres to you Simon, do say hello to all our heroes up there in the blue skies.

Tim mentioned JF767, it was test flown by Norwegian Leif Lundsten in 1943.

    Bloody marvellous!!

Test flown by Leif Lundsten, summer of 1943 while at Worthy Down. I’m tracking down all his Spits.

You’ve certainly put in a lot of effort there, DCK. Unfortunate that nothing has turned up – yet. Been trying to think of other possible people to try but I don’t suppose the likes of the NHS would give any details. Nursing Homes? – so many it would be hard to know where to begin. Her name and the population of the area make it a bit like the proverbial needle in the haystack. Sad to think too that had Major Lundsten not been lost and their marriage had gone ahead, you would be looking for someone with a more uncommon name.

Yes indeed. Nursing homes I’m not sure about, I think they are usually by law not able to give out much information? If they had married in 43 this would have been much easier indeed. Not giving up, but taking a bit of a break right now. 🙂

I found this one though, a memorial service for a Mr. Eric Newby in 2007. A Miss Sheila Lee is listed. The area fits.

If you want to take a look, here’s all I gathered on the name and the address.

Do you know the general area of the channel where he was last seen? A lot more surveying and marine activity has taken place since 1944. As the recent Do217 recovery shows, planes don’t just disappear once they go beneath the waves.

Utah beach. Some people say near Isigny, but no one seems to be certain. It could be either land or water basically.
