Some 3D render images and official TAI (Turkish Aerospace Industries) press statement.

No figures have been release yet but it is safe to assume that Hurkus’ performance is going to be somewhere around EMB-314 and KT-1, the two contenders in the basic trainer project for urgent requirement covering 36 aircraft (plus 19 options)

The contract of the “Turkish Primary and Basic Trainer Aircraft Development Program” after being signed between the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) and TAI, became effective on 15 March 2006. The 8-month conceptual design stage of the program, which will last 59 months, was approved by SSM. Within the framework of the program, a total of four Turkish Primary and Basic Trainer Aircraft prototypes will be designed, developed, produced and tested by TAI.

The “System Requirement Review Meeting” of the program was realized in July, whereas the “Conceptual Design Evaluation Meeting” was organized at TAI’s facilities with the participation of SSM Head of Aviation Department Mr. Sedat Güldoðan and SSM representatives, on 8 December 2006. At the meeting, with the approval of the current concept, it was decided to proceed with the next level which is the “pre design activities.”

Furthermore at the meeting; it was announced that the Turkish Primary and Basic Training Aircraft was named “HURKUS” after Vecihi Hurkus, who had numerous contributions in the history of Turkish Aviation.

Within the framework of the Turkish Primary and Basic Training Aircraft Program, which is planned to be realized with maximum local contribution, one of TAI’s main responsibilities is to receive an airworthiness certificate from the European Aviation Safety Agency.

    Why not use a -131 or -184?

AN/ALQ-188 was indeed replaced by AN/ALQ-131 AFAIK, which means those 86-0251 photos possibly old.

Does this -188 immitate Russian or Chinese emitters of some type?

    Most probably.

PLA-MKII’s lesson in media propaganda 101:

Did the Iranian president actually say “wiped off the map”? Apparently it was a “translation error” (or deliberate propaganda)

    http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article12790.htm

for those of you who do not believe please take the original text of his speech in persian and go to the nearest university and have it translated. or try babelfish.

this “mad man” never said “wiped off the map” at all. 😮

Well, actually he doesn’t really need to say it. His missiles do it for himself..

Note: IIRC, the picture is from a parade before Ahmadinajad came to power.

New diesel U-boat for Brazil, nuclear goal fades

    By Andrei Khalip

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, Dec 12 (Reuters) – The Brazilian navy has chosen Germany’s HDW-ThyssenKrupp to build a new conventional submarine and upgrade its underwater fleet.

But the draft deal worth $1.4 billion means the postponement of the military’s goal of producing its own nuclear-powered sub.

Brazil’s five submarines are all based on the same firm’s diesel-electrical IKL-209 model. The new IKL-214 has an improved design but is far from the concept of a teardrop-shaped hull of a nuclear submarine built to operate for years undetected without resurfacing

South Korea has recently ordered 6 additional Type 214 boats to the original 3. Add to this the Brazilian order. Type 214 is also the most favorite candidate in Turkish Navy’s 6 AIP submarine contest. On the other hand there is this problem with Hellenic Navy’s first of four planned Type 214 boats, the Papanikolis.

OK, thanks for the update. I must have missed the EMPAE decisions regarding FAC’s.

According to EMPAE 2006-2015, no major fighting ship procurement was planned other than 6 multimission/AAW frigates, if I’m not mistaken. Did the original contract for Super Vita’s cover +3 options?

Aero Vodochody has been through very hard times and put a lot of hope in Greece for sale of its L-159. If Albatros really is out, than that means Aero got a heavy punch in the stomach.

I believe the name “LCS” is a bad selection for the project. It should be “SCS”, initials of “Straits Combat Ship”, since it was designed both Straits of Hurmuz and Taiwan primarily in mind, I think.

On the other hand, LCS is an interesting concept. It has an enormous speed, that’s ok. But what’s the trade-off for this? Weapon outfit? Displacement, which indirectly effects personnel living conditions, fuel, water and stores and above all seakeeping properties.

LCS-1’s sea trials will shed light to most questions wandering. But I think I’m way too conservative in some issues, I cannot put LCS concept into a proper place in my mind.. (maybe missing good ol’ days of Cold War…)

the program has been postponed again

    http://www.zaman.com/?bl=hotnews&alt=&trh=20061213&hn=39156

is the reason about the engine being of french origin official ?

In that case I think that exactly justifies why Turkey should not be in the EU.

Not exactly postponed, Army requested field tests in SouthEastern Anatolia, according to MoD’s speech, Rooivalk is in favored position.

Not EADS, EDA(European Defence Agency). 22 of 24 EU states are a member including Cyprus.

You are right Wiggin, my bad, I confused two agencies.

I’ve seen drawing of the second of the class LCS-2. Which, it looks totally different? (i.e. tri-ram design) Sorry, I am lost can anyone help????

There are two LCS design proposals. 4 prototype ships will be built. LCS-1 and LCS-3 by Lockheed Martin led consortium and LCS-2 and LCS-4 by General Dynamics led consortium (the trimaran design). These two designs will “compete” after entering service and the winner ship will be selected as LCS design, if I’m not mistaken. Kinda like the procedure followed in ATF and JSF projects

It is decided in the meeting of Defence Industry Executive Committee today that Denel AH-2 Rooivalk will be tested in South Eastern Anatolia for a brief period of time for the helicopter’s operational characteristics. It is very well understood that Boeing’s AH-64D offer (via FMS) was not even on agenda and it was a clear speculation attempt of some well known lobbies.
