If my memory serves me well, there are two Tomcat squadrons in Western Iraq alongside Syrian border flying “Operation Steel Curtain”. Are those last operational Tomcat squadrons, or am I mixing up things too much?
Agusta Westland (A-129 Mangusta), Denel (CSH-2 Rooivalk), Eurocopter (Tiger) and Rosoboronexport (Ka-50) have presented their proposals for ATAK-II attack and tactical reconnaissance helicopter project. It is expected that decision will be announced in the second or third quarter of 2006.
AFAIK the F-4 is still the property of the US Goverment and special permission is needed if the THK is to give/sell it to anyone else.
Nope. First two batches of F-4E’s were bought with national budget, while remaining were donated. They were not procured under FMS, F-16’s were. Turkey did not ask any permission when conducting Terminator modernization programme on her fleet of F-4E’s.
AFAIK there is a big junkyard in Konya, but not sure.
They are horizontal rudders.
I am wondering why the SF-260, is not included in the proposal? is it because it has a side by side configuration?
Turkey opened this project to replace her ageing fleet of Cessna T-37B/C Tweet trainers. TuAF is looking for a high performance turboprop trainer that can meet the performance criteria that a basic jet trainer has.
SF-260’s will give basic training to Air Force Academy pilot candidates.
Note #1: Switzerland lifted arms embargoe on Turkey last year.
Note #2: This project (36+19) is NOT a license production one. Turkey will procure the aircraft directly from the manufacturer.

Torpedoes that Turkish Navy use:
Ay-class submarines (Type 209/1200)
Mk14/Mk23
Mk37II/III
SST-4
Preveze-class submarines (Type 290/1400)
Mk14/23
Mk37II/III
Mk24 ModII Tigerfish
(UGM-84 Harpoon)
Gur-class submarines (Type 209/1400 Mod.)
Mk24 ModII Tigerfish
DM2A4L
(UGM-84 Harpoon)
Note: Turkey originally had a contract for 2-battery version DM2A4 (DM2A4S) for Gur-class submarines. An additional contract with Atlas was signed then to upgrade these torpedoes to 4-battery (German Navy standard) version (DM2A4L). This addition caused a delay in the procurement schedule.
Has there been any test since the trial of BrahMos on December 24th?
F-35 Nazgûl
Hell yeah!! 🙂
China Stops Production of Fighter Jets Under Russian License
MosNews
China has suspended the production of Su-27SK fighter jets under their Russian license, Russia’s Vremya Novostej newspaper reported on Tuesday, Nov. 2. According to Chinese military officials, these planes no longer satisfy the requirements of the Chinese Air Force.
The license to produce 200 fighter jets was purchased by China in 1996. The conditions of the contract stipulated that the jets would be assembled at Chinese plants using Russian components. The value of the contract amounted to $2.5 billion. However, after assembling 95 jets out of the planned 200, the Chinese side addressed the Sukhoi Construction Bureau with a request to stop deliveries of the assembly kits. The request was made in May, and neither side disclosed the reasons for the contract being suspended.
Vremya Novostej quoted a source in the Russian delegation at Airshow China-2004 that opened on Monday, Nov. 1, as saying the Chinese side had requested the Su-27SK fighter jets be equipped with additional guided anti-ship missiles. However, this model of fighter jets was not designed to attack targets at sea.
Representatives of the Sukhoi construction bureau presented the new model of Su-27 fighter jet — Su-27SKM at the airshow. This plane could satisfy all the Chinese requirements, because it is equipped with guided “air-to-sea” missiles. However, it is unclear whether this new modification of Su jet will be delivered to China in the near future.

Yes, Ka-50 Hokum, Ka-52 Alligator will not be used by Russian Army. Ka-52 was selected by Yemen, if I remember correct.
The information I quoted was from The International Institute for Strategic Studies publication, The Military Balance, 2002-2003 edition. There were no notes about Su-34 deliveries. I also read some news that inital production runs for Platypus has begun.
Hi,
According to IISS The Military Balance Russia has the following in her inventory:
Long Range Aviation Command:
63 Tu-95
15 Tu-160
117 Tu-22M/MR
20 Il-78 Tanker
30 Tu-134 Tanker
Tactical Aviation:
371 Su-24, 144 Su-24 (Recce)
235 Su-25
5 MiG-25, 40 MiG-25 (Recce)
255 MiG-29
392 Su-27
256 MiG-31
20 A-50 AEW
Naval Aviation:
10 Tu-142
26 Il-38
4 Be-12
45 Tu-22M
52 Su-24
10 Su-25
52 Su-33
I must add that, according to reports, total annual flying hour for a Long Range Aviation pilot is 25 hours, for a Tactical / Air Defense pilot is 15 hours, while NATO standart is approximately 180 hours.
Army aviation has approximately 1700 helicopters (Mi-8/17/24/26). There were 8 Ka-50 in incentory for evaluation, but eventually Mi-28 Havoc was selected as new generation attack helicopter (I don’t recall the number of order). Ka-50-2 is a tandem two seat version of the original Ka-50 Hokum, which was offered to Turkey for her attack helicopter project (with the nickname “Erdogan”). Ka-50-2 is often confused with Ka-52, which is a side-by-side two seat version of Ka-50.
If I remember exactly, the original version of Su-34 carried no radar, maybe it was prototype, I’m not sure. I read somewhere that a low rate production run has begun, but deliveries depend on budget.
