How is that, please show sources that state it lost speed an manouverability and just “HOW MUCH” speed and manouverability did it lose to the MiG-29A/B

    Some data for MiG-29:

    MiG-29 9-12 Fulcrum A MiG-29 9-13 Fulcrum C

Normal take off weight 15000kg 15300kg

Thrust to weight ratio 1.11 1.09

    Ceiling 17500m 17000m

    Top speed 2450km/hr 2450km/hr

    G-limit 9.0 9.0

    Initial climb rate 330m/sec 300m/sec

As you can see the difference is minimal, and agility and maneuvering performance should be the same. Additionally, several sources stated that pilots flying “Hunchback” Fulcrum C reported no difference in handling/maneuvering qualities. Like any other aircraft MiG-29 had and still has disadvantages, but subsonic agility/maneuverability is not one of them.

    A MiG-23M. Maybe the 20 from 35.IAP (Zerbst AB) and 126.IAD of
“AK South” and 16. Air-army (GDR) ~1980. After the horrible expierences from 1982 all did receive new dispenser for flares and chaff.

The aircraft in a photo is not MiG-23M. That is MiG-23ML or MLA.

    Yep…

What happened to SMT’s and UBT’s enlarged spine? Were there any aerodynamic penalties? Originally it was claimed that MiG-29SMT’s swollen spine does not affect flying qualities (Y. Gordon’s MiG-29 title). Also, does anyone know if current MiG-29SMT feature increased thrust engines?

    МиГ-23МЛД,

Is there any information on MiG-25 combat record during Iran-Iraq war?

    Thanks

I have not a video but photos of the two Migs Of the RIAT ´97 – MiG-23UB 8325 and MiG-23ML 2425 of the 41st fighter tiger squadron. MiG-23ML was displayed by mjr. Jiří Kareš on that RIAT ´97

this “spárka” was destroyed in 19.5. 1998, 8325 was the last flycapable two-seater of the CzAF.

Thank you for sharing and posting the pictures.

Since this is Czech Air Force thread, does anyone have video of Czech AF MiG-23ML at RIAT ’97? I believe that it was the only flying display of MiG-23 performing at Western airshow. Any information or links will be appreciated.

The outcome of the dogfight will be determined by pilot experience and training. The Mirage’s advantage in instantaneous turn (30deg/sec vs. 28deg/sec for Flanker/Fulcrum) alone does not warrant first shot/kill.

I think that Su-27/30 is inferiorer than other contemporary fighter not only because of its turn ratio, also because of its unsatisfactory acceleration which never unveiled :diablo:

How is SU-27/30 inferior? According to the above article Mirage pilot stated that Mirage 2000 has initial advantage, but as the engagement progresses “…the sheer power and the agility of Su-30 will overwhelm you”.

In my image, the turn rate and agility of Mirage 2000 should much higher than Su-30MKs, now it is proved by your post. 🙂
I heared that Russia was surprised after that exercise 😀

Mirage 2000 has higher instantaneous turn rate, but Su-30 has advantage in sustained turn rate. This was known well before this exercise took place. Therefore, I don’t really see any “surprises” for Flanker pilots. Rafale vs. Flanker engagement would have been much more interesting.

You are correct that “one” F/A-18 was shot down over Iraq in the first Gulf War. (lucky shot?) Yet, many Mig-25’s have been shot down over both Syria (i.e. Lebanon) and Iraq. As for “Aerial Patrol Aircraft”. If, that is a simple solution why haven’t other countries followed suite? As a matter fact most have at one point or another and have failed miserably. Also, as long as you bring it up? How about AWACS Types opposing your Mig-31E’s! Wouldn’t they have greater range to warn and direct hostile aircraft in positions against the Mig-31’s? (i.e. Flanks) Another point what happens if the Mig-31 fails to destroy all of the attacker at BVR? Are they capable of winning a WVR fight with say a F-15 or F-16? Sorry, but dedicated type like your Mig-31 Interceptor or Aerial Patrol Aircraft. Have been obsolete for decades……….Respectfully:diablo:

It is highly unlikely that well-flown MiG-31 will enter WVR fight if its initial BVR attack fails. Its standard tactic is to turn 180 degrees and escape at supersonic speed. MiG-31 certainly has a performance and fuel capacity for such “hit and run” engagement. It should be treated with respect and caution.

Bla bla bla. Compare the TWR’s. Also the turn rates for the MiG seems fishy considering its draggy design.

MiG-29’s impressive turn performance at low altitude has been confirmed by numerous airshow appearances. JAS-39 Gripen is a good multi-role aircraft, but the Fulcrum is still a formidable opponent in subsonic regime when flown by experienced pilots. Perhaps in a near future a more objective comparison between these two fighters will be available from Hungarian AF.

During Farnborough ’88 MiG-29 accomplished 360 degree level turn in less than 16 seconds, which is at least as good as F-16C’s numbers.
