I can’t exactly remember, but one member pointed out that the intake pylons are unlikely to carry PL-12. Could be big length problem. It might stick out in front of the intake in a big way. Maybe it is designed to carry 2 IRAAM (PL-5E or possibly PL-8B)

If the two intake pylons could carry air to air missiles, the missiles should not be two IRAAMs, because all IRAAMs are fired on pylon, the flame would burn and destroy drop tanker and fuselage. However, a middle range missle like PL12 can be: drop and then fire. This launch manner is safe to the airplane.

May I add my two cents?

It is well known that the most accurate information is usually from public media. Since Mr.Flogger/MIG-23MLD can read Chinese, I’d like to quote a Chinese report addressing the deveopment of Chinese third generation heavy fighter(J11B). The report was from “China Aviation News”, the offical newspaper of AVIC1 and AVIC2. This reoprt can be found on AVIC1’s offical web site: http://www.avic1.com.cn/Chinese/xwzx/detail/20050415_3.htm

There is a paragraph in the report wrote that the fighter successfully passed full scale static test on 9/28/2004 by adding breaking load to the aircarft to test its strength. See the attached picture.

This implys the internal structure of J11B has been re-designed! If it is just a simple licensed copy, the static breaking test is not needed.

I think J11B is a new designed fighter utilizing Su-27’s nothing but its aerodynamic appearance.

    The report also says:

J11B is designed by Shengyang Aircraft Research Institute(No.601 Insitute), is manufactured by Shenyang Aircraft Industry (Group) Corporation Ltd(SAC), is tested by China Flight Test Establishment(CFTE).

The team from No.601 Insitute got “full victory” in negotiation for license issue through 6 rounds’ talks in 3 years.

Also adressed the test works for radar, avionics, filght control system, power supply system and “new type” engine.
    ……….

J-8F serviced in PLA’s navy aviation

J-8F is an effective platform that can fire active radar homing AAM-PL12. J-8F can easily beat Japan’s F-15J,F-4J that do not have capability firing AIM120.

Here is the best KD-88 picture. Please note its optical guidance head and the antenna on the tip of wing.

Two JF-17 Thunders commissioned into PAF

Two JF-17 Thunders commissioned into PAF

    By Mayed Ali

LAHORE: Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mehmood commissioned two JF-17 Thunders into the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in a ceremony at Kamra on Monday.

These two Thunders had arrived at Kamra on March 2. They were moved to Pakistan in a cargo plane as against usual procedure of flying home. These two aircrafts were assembled at Kamra.

It was learnt the aircrafts were suppose to rumble the skies of Pakistan on Monday. However, the weather conditions were not conducive for the flight. These aircrafts will now fly on the first clear day. Before their first public flight on March 23, these aircrafts will keep flying for evaluation and test purposes. These aircrafts will stay at Kamra for the same purpose.

The PAF anticipates acquiring around 10-12 aircrafts by the end of this year. These aircrafts will arrive in intervals. The next batch of two aircrafts is expected within three months. After the arrival, these aircrafts will be put at the disposal of Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra (PAC) for tests, trial and probable upgradation and changes to meet the requirements of the PAF. Moreover, these aircrafts will be worked on by the PAC vis-à-vis specifications for diverse use, that is, for maritime operations, for air-to-air missions and for air-to-land missions.

visually my only two complaints are
    – canards are huge compared to euros
    – the ugly “sticks” supporting upper lip of the air intake.

overall, looks pretty good and order for 150+ AL31FN indicates PLAAF plans good number.

I don’t think the “sticks” ugly. J10’s air intake is designed for consideration of supersonic performence. J10 is excellent in both low speed and high speed. Its max Mach is as high as M2.36, ceiling is >20000m. J10=F16+M2000 or MIG31

The fact is based on the three trial Beidou satellites(Beidou-1), a Beidou industry chain has already been formed in China, from chipsets, user terminals to system application solution. If you type “Beidou” in Chinese google, you will find many Chinese companies are selling Beidou products such as navigation terminals for personnel, vehicle and ship, timing products and OEM boards as well as group management and control system.
    http://www.unistrong.com/product/beidou/index.asp
    http://www.51gps.com/Shop/ShowProduct.asp?ProductID=334

Compared with GPS, a unique feature of Beidou is its two-way text communication capability. A Beidou terminal can report or can be asked to report its position and sent message to remote center without the help of any other datalink. In China, a Beidou terminal can even send and receive short message to/from normal GSM/CDMA mobile phones! This is very useful in exploration, lifesaving, group management and military command and control. This is an interesting example: a Chinese company provides solutions for Army’s command system. By this system, a general can even send command to a tank or a single soldier carrying Beidou terminal:the thorough flat organization 🙂
    http://www.spacestar.com.cn/new/showproducts.asp?id=1&cid=52&unid=192

Beidou receiver and antenna looks bigger than GPS’s. This will be improved after Beidou-2 is ready.

The pictures are snapshots of web pages of existing Beidou products.

What is that? Is that supposed to be a JDAM type of bomb (FT-1)? Or does it use infrared?

Yes, FT-1 should be a JDAM type of bomb. At least its appearance resembles JDAM very much 🙂

Can someone who reads chinese asess if that table resembles something taken out of official publication?

I must say I am a little bit sceptical because the length of j10 seems overstated and weights are very much rounded (unlike f16’s figures), even for fc-1 which should be export plane with stats less confidential than those of j10. If true, who knows what else has been rounded up/down and approximated to what extent.

This table is scanned from a Chinese military mag facing enthusiasts. However the table is translated from a German military mag. So the table is not officially released.

One parameter on the table I agree to is the J10’s max speed:M2.2. J10 pays attention to both subsonic performence and supersonic performence. Look at J10’s adjustable air intake and F16’s simple fixed intake, and J10’s large vertical fin(for supersonic stability) you will know the big difference between J10 and F16.
