Her view was that the editor has the last say,and his/her decision on what constitutes ” news ” is final, whatever the circumstances.

An old pal of mine is a lecturer in media and photo journalism. Above his desk is a large printed banner with a simple motto: “IMPACT IMPACT IMPACT”

There are lots of fabulous B-36 images out there in Google land, but would be nice to keep this thread UK deployment related.

Sort of UK related is that W/Cdr Ken Wallis flew the B36 but I suspect he was on deployment to the USA. If you get the chance to do one of the ‘gyro days’ or a visit to his hangar/garage there is a B36 throttle unit (can’t miss it with all those levers 😀 ) on one of the benches, a presentation from SAC.

    Design origin: 1941!

Indeed, the design request was sent to Consolidated and Boeing on 11th April 1941.

The B36 is my all-time favourite aircraft, I first saw photos of it in ‘National Geographic Magazine’ in the late 50’s. My uncle had many years’ worth of the mags and as a schoolboy I would read through several issues at a time looking for said pics (which included an article on Burtonwood). I wrote to Convair (Gen Dynamics) in the 60’s and got some super photos and operating info from them.

The first time my wife and I visited the US in 1989 was so I could visit the USAF museum and see their example. My aim is to see all the others, I ‘got’ the Pima B36 in 2007 and hope to visit Castle this autumn for theirs. I also saw the bits of the XC99 at Dayton in 2007 but they didn’t count as they were just ‘bits’ at the time 😀 That just leaves the SAC museum in Nebraska.

I think I have most of the books on the B36 but Meyer Jacobsen’s huge work (400 pages) is the doggies do dah’s.

    Great thread, this 🙂

Please tell me how Von Braun as a designer of a weapon…is different from Wallis…who knew his bombs would breach dams causing flooding of civilian areas?
Or did Chadwick think the Lancaster would be used to drop flowers?

Please don’t class these men as equals.Von Braun was a very different character. Did Harris or Wallis use a concentration camp to supply their needs. Von Braun was a card carrying Nazi and had been a uniformed member of the SS.
I worked for many years with a guy whose father survived the ‘factory’ at Mittelwerk/Nordhausen, he was a young boy, a Czech Jew and no other members of his family survived. My coleague David made the pilgrimage to the site a couple of years ago. His father had recently died and would never discuss his time there.

Sorry for the thread hijack but it is a sore point with me.

    regards

It’s no more an invasion than anyone else driving by your house.
    Don’t get your knickers in a twist….:D

Well it is a bit more, like I said it equates to someone taking a photo through your curtains from the street, would you stand for that? 😮

There is a resolution issue here too. I checked another friend’s house which is large and set back from a busy main road. You couldn’t make out any real detail of even the front door. I just looked like an estate agent’s advert. However my (previously mentioned) other friend’s street is narrow (as is mine) so you can see right into peoples houses if the window has no obstruction.

I think streetview could be useful and fun but I just have a few reservations. If my knickers get too twisted I can always have the house blanked out.

even though it is possible to zoom into the front of houses it isn’t excellent quality as it does get very blurred and unclear, hardly enough for it to be called an invasion of privacy.I

Sorry to disagree but I’ve just checked a friend’s house and the net curtains prevent any views but looking at the neighbours house opposite you can see the fireplace and tv.

As a homeowner I class this as an invasion of my privacy in the same way that I don’t want someone standing looking in to my room from the street with a camera. We aren’t on the system yet, but I will keep checking.

Does the airport have any control over the AVP charges? I thought the gatekeepers and ‘wardens’ were Bolling Valley staff, and it was run by the council – or whoever Bolling Valley are.

This is bad news indeed (though forecast on various forums after the ‘open skies’ agreement was reached).

It’s one thing hoping that BE would fill in with Gatwick, but Gatwick isn’t Heathrow (well obviously:rolleyes:) It isn’t really even London. I have used the BD service from/to LBA on many occasions, usually to connect with a LHR flight and whilst I dislike transiting LHR as much as anyone, it’s a case of ‘needs must’. A connection via Gatwick would mean it’s probably easier to use the train from the word ‘go’ (I did once use the B.Cal helicopter transfer:D but that was dropped decades ago) I’ll probably think further afield for the long haul flights and go from MAN. On my last 4 long hauls I have asked for costings/timings from KLM and whilst the cost was just OK the timings ( and also eventual destinations for further connection ) were useless. I have also personal (and friend’s) experiences of unreliabilty from KLM. That just sticks in the corner of your mind when planning big trips.

I have happy memories of sitting at the bmi gates at LHR in comfy seats, a quiet atmosphere, a nice coffee shop and views over the runways. Compared with the overcrowded cattle shed that BA calls the shuttle gates – and thereby maybe hangs the reason – quiet gates = low income.

Ah well off to Australia for Avalon (and a bit of exploring too) in a couple of weeks flying from MAN with Singapore – but even they’re shrinking that service and rumoured to be chopping it later in the year. What’s the world coming to? 🙁

How on earth can you come to that conclusion

    Also re DazDaMan’s similar point.

    I don’t have to – If I want to feel it’s derogatory, then that’s all I need.

The law states that basically anything can be considered as racist/sexist/gender-ist etc.etc.etc if the recipient OR any other party deems it to be.

There has already been a variety of feelings in this thread. One does, one doesn’t like ‘Jock’ . I remember news items of the various home Nations talking about racism by (mainly) the English against them. How the dickens is a Scot or a Welshman (sorry – Welshperson) a different race to me.

I am not advocating acceptance of hate words in a hate scenario but the recent news items about the Princes and the speed with which the media get onto the relatives of the recipients just get up my nose. So I want my share of petulance too.

Perhaps I didn’t use enough emoticons to get the irony across in my post so I’ll make up for it now.

    :dev2::p:D:diablo:;):rolleyes:

Duly ammended – no insult or offence intended on my part, apologies if any caused.

Sorry to sound off and nothing personal intended, it’s just a point I feel the need to bring out every now and again. I do like what you have amended it to (as an Englishman) but that opens another can of worms :diablo:
