Indeed I have but thanks for the suggestion.
Nothing wrong with tankers of course – just that they’re slightly over-photographed when compared to the bombers!
Well they were tankers longer than they were bombers.
I believe one was used to detect the hydrogen line (echo of the big bang)
An ex II (ac) kite.
She’s looking very spruce, well done lads.
What, this one?
Mark
Taken at Swinderby I assume.
@Creakingdoor: Mercury spillage caused by a heavy landing so I assume from the a/c self.
There is an account that a brand new E E Lightning was scrapped (or at least never went operational) for a similar reason.
F1a XM170 total flying time 14 mins.
FSII you’ll find mainly in military Avtur it’s not used much in civil stuff.
Commercial diesel and Avtur are still a fair way apart on the SG table which tells us a few things about them.
Diesel waxes sooner than Avtur but you can go further on a gallon.
You guys are just splitting hairs for the sake of it 🙂
Okay okay, It has been decribed to me (when I was still in training) that all kerosine is diesel but not all diesel is kerosine. Does that clear it up? 😀
And Paul is spot on – just research TWA Flight 800 and you’ll see how different JetA1 reacts when it’s in an enclosed environment.
lancastermkx JetA1 is Diesel with additives, nothing more, nothing less.
I wouldn’t put it quite like that.
JetA1 or whatever it is today is slightly lighter than commercial diesel.
A comparison of weights (SG)
Avtur (turbine kerosine) 0.78
Avtag (turbine gasoline) 0.76
Avcat (carrier kerosine) 0.80
Diesel (commercial) 0.82
Gasoil 0.84
These are of course average weights, it does vary slightly per batch.
The emergency response is more to ensure the fuel doesn’t enter the water table (ground water) thereby causing possible environmental issues.
Plus you don’t want all your groundies slipping on it and putting in huge compensation claims.
A photo of the offending part. Looks like turbine to me
Avro’s Vulcan = swap old Olympuses for newer Conway turbofans
If I remember correctly there was a trial fit.
Personally, I would stick with the Olympus, the Conway had some issues that were never resolved
Nicely done Blue 2.
I seem to remember the Artouste stand looking a little different in the good ‘ole days 😀
Have you tried Cobham?
I do believe that a number of Lightnings were fitted with OWT to simulate the radar signature of the Backfire, also the last flying Lightnings on the Tornado trials were similarly configured.
