Thanks Bruce, wasn’t sure if that was still the correct avenue. Does Father Christmas do aircraft transport and logistics solutions do you know?
Having missed the boat somewhat as to the result of attempts to sell of/dispose of the exhibits, how might one go about enquiring about the acquisition of the cockpit of the Canberra in order to see it saved?
Yum!
Thanks baz! 😀
Scott,
Delta Jets were pioneers (as I understand it) in the development of electric start conversions for the Hunter, so another avenue for you to try.
As Aerial touched upon ,the massive weight penalties of electric start were a big contributing factor in it never being implemented on the Canberra. Going back to your earlier question about carts though, we are simply using old stock carts – when they’re gone, they’re gone!
Contact for Delta as follows:
office@deltajets.com – Chris Vaughan is your man.
Sorry old chap, Canberra’s have never been electric start equipped!
We are still starting using lovely dirty cartridges courtesy of Plessey and their triple breach starter 😀
Any talk of electric start was at a feasability study level only I am afraid – alas, it never happened.
Hi Scott
That would be us then!
I don’t know of anything specific held by the team, but that said I wasn’t involved 5 years ago so can certainly ask the question.
I do have a feeling somebody else on site has a collection of RR electric start feasability study paperwork which was written up for the RAF’s PR9 fleet shortly before retirement, which sounds very much like what you are referring to. I can make enquiries there too.
Will see what we can do..

My aforementioned bargain Canberra. Far from perfect but I kinda like it…
Wow, XH135 in a ball gown and with a different haircut!
Having worked on the real XH135 in service (a hemp PR9!) my Warrant would’ve had a fit if the jet looked like that after I’d BF serviced it!
Not that I’m complaining, I am rather fond of raspberry ripple Caberra’s too of course (see signature link) and your doppleganger ‘135 is very tasty!
Woohoo that’s the first time I’ve ever guessed one of these cryptic ID queries right!…what’s the prize? 😎
What about The Hunting H.126? You mention “pilot sat almost on top of his engine” as is the case on this aircraft and I’m sure I have a recollection of reading that the H.126 had an air start capability, though whether that was on board or not I couldn’t say. What with it’s “blown flaps” trickery on board it would be a distinct possibilty wouldn’t it?…just a thought!
How about an unsubscription to the VTTS appeal so as to leave some space on the doormat of the chosen friend for christmas cards?
According to the revised listing it could now be either Phantom or Vulcan! 😀
Gotta be a contender for comedy listing of the year surely? :p
Peter, the canopy in question in the ebay link has no evidence to suggest it is hinged …you may be seeing the picture posted later on of a hinged PR9 canopy 😉
twighlight
My best efforts..
I see a B(I).8 canopy on a regular basis (forum member here, maybe he can confirm) and it looks very similar to that.
!
Who could that possibly be then? 😉
I certainly see the similarity, but from the photo (assuming as you say lenses aren’t playing tricks) the agle of the frint hoop seems too upright – the B(I)8 and PR9 canopies have quite a pronounced forward sweep making them very hard to stand on end!
Also, is that very accurate scratching in the last photo or MDC? My laptop screen isn’t great so I can’t quite tell..if it is MDC it rules out the B(I)8 and PR9 for sure
Chairman sounds good to me Scott! I can’t keep up with the titles and positions in the museum world any more…
