While we’re here, has anyone got any descent PR.9 cockpit pics, prefferably earlier ones?

I can do “last of the line” examples, no use for the early ones though I’m afraid. I joined the squadron too late for Decca TANS and all that good stuff.

Oh Ritch how could you!! 😮

I need to wash my eyes out after witnessing that vulgar display of Canberra decapitation!..and to think the poor old girl flew in 🙁

Nice pics in all other respects though 😀

As most of you know, I’m finishing-off a new Lightning book at the mo – have to say I’m tempted to push to do a Canberra book next – what do you folks think? Worth doing, or is the subject kinda overdone?

Could go either way I think..with the 60th Anniversary approaching there could be a renewed interest and it may give a good focal point for a book, or it could be that post 60th it all dies down again and you’re left with just another Canberra book. That said, I’d be well up for a new take on the type, but I might just be that little bit biased y’know 😉

A couple more..Interior shots of TT.18 WK126, an aircraft I have a long history with. So much so, she inspired my screen name! Again, not typical shots, something a little different..

First up..WT333..I have the great privilege of being a member of the WT333 Operating Team, a bunch of chaps with nothing better to do than keep an ageing Canberra in ground running condition 😀

Next up.. XH131. I was lucky enough to have served on 39(1PRU) Sqn as a young rigger in the late 90’s on the last Canberra’s in the RAF. Here’s a couple of PR9 XH131. Some angles that maybe not everyone will have seen a PR9 from

That’ll do for now as all this photobucket uploading is killing me…somewhat slow computer!

    Woohoo!

    Excellent idea!

I’ll get digging..not got much on the PC but sure there’s a couple I can dig up 😀

That T.17 is gorgeous..despite what many say I never thought they were the ugliest variant..that must surely go to the T.22.

And as for the PR.7..I worked on that when it had fuselage and wing shaped bits stuck to the back end of it! Still loooking great though

Anyway, on with the hunt for Canberra pics! 😀

Sadly there is no way that WT333 will ever fly again, despite being cared for by an active support team and maintained in good ground running condition, she could never take to tha air again,…….especially on our budget:D

hee hee..don’t you love it when 2 people reply at the same time! 😀

    In a word..nope!

I think it could be said that with limitless money and fully certified equipment to hand and end endless supply of full time highly skilled engineers just about any project could be theoretically made “airworthy” as I believe has been discussed here before. The facts however are significantly less optimistic 🙁

Whilst WT333 is a good airframe, like all “outsiders” she suffers from the never ending battle with corrosion. Once it starts, it doesn’t stop. All you can do is chase it around the structure and treat it to the best of your ability. It will alway win eventually though.

There’s the ongoing issue of the Fatigue Life of certain components. Towards the end of their service life Canberra airframes (and engines as you rightly say) were subject to mass of NDT checks and inspections relating to components suffering significantly from fatigue. Like corrosion, it doesn’t go away…just accumulates as time goes on meaning parts become Life Expired or simply beyond economical repair and become too costly and labour intensive to renew.

Those are just a couple of things to bear in mind when thinking about airworthy aircraft, there’s a whole host of other stuff but it all leads to the same conclusion. She’s ground bound for good..albeit with a good amount of sky appearing under her nosewheel every once in a while 😀

So, all this adds up to one final summary..get along to Brunty whenever you can on open days and help WT333’s heart to keep beating by buying yourself a treat from the range of merchandise we have to offer or making a small donation. It all goes towards keeping the old girl running for years to come…and don’t forget.. 60th anniversary of the English Electric Canberra 13th May folks!

    memories!

That could so easily be minor stars and “recs” on ‘874 and ‘849 at Marham circa 2000 when I was but a wee rigger. I think it proves the point perfectly – I’ve seen countless photographs of Canberra’s which did little to stir my imagination, but this one is oh so evocative and takes me right back to those ridiculous 2am late shifts trying desperatly to finish the job in time for Ops later that day. Really enjoyed that pic, thanks for sharing! 😀

    correct!

Indeed it is, good shout Jon 😀 Infact this very aircraft is the inspiration for my screen-name! (seen in happier days on my avatar)

A small team consisting of the airframe owner and a few volunteers, myself included, are on standby ready to re-instate the aircraft on the airport. Tis will be the first time the aircraft has been in one piece since around 1993ish when she was dismantled for transport to the Jet Age Museum. On losing the premises the museum was forced to move the airframe into external storage on the airfield, upon which she was bought by a private collector and awaits her turn for some attention. Boggy conditions prevent us from doing anything until the ground firms up..so..watch this Canberra shaped space!

    Hunter?

Not aware of any Canberra fuselages lying around in Worcs lately, are you sure it wasn’t the stripey (Defence School of Medicine) hunter XL536 up near Upton way you saw? It is currently in a dismantled state on a farm up there..possibilty?

Not normally one for leaving condolences for people I didn’t know personally, but as a Canberra man myself Les Bywaters has been something of a household name for as long as I can remember, so this does come as sad news. I’m sure a lot of people will be thinking of and mouring the loss of this famous Canberra campaigner now and on the 60th.
