Its caNberra with an “N” !!
A camberra is summat you takes pictures wiv..
Suitable for duty as a Canberra nosewheel, or Shackleton tailwheel if we’re talking proper aeroplanes… :p Rich
Steady!!
😀
Shorts proposed a design, the PD17 which I am told by a current Shorts employee and archivist, was essentially a launch platform on which you attached whatever the standard strike fighter of the day would have been (at that time the English Electric P17 was seen to be the likely contender, it later became the TSR-2)
The PD17 took off vertically and accelerated up to the operational speed of the fighter aircraft at which point it separated and carried out it’s sortie.
The bit which is relevant to this thread is that at the end of the sortie the 2 aircraft would rendezvous and re-connect to land vertically, the PD17 then dropping off it’s parasite fighter to go and collect another awaiting in the circuit!
Apparently the VTOL capabilty was optional and could be left in the hangar so the whole setup could take off and land “conventionally”.
The proposal I have seen is dated October 1960 but it never made it any further than the drawing board. Shorts obviously believe it perfectly achievable however.
Absolutely, it costs nothing to hope!
As for PR9’s..XH134 is the only and current contender. A lovely hemp space to be watched!
And to avoid further thread creep, I too would love to see XX885 with sky under her wings too 🙂
We already have two… possibly three. Just a question of when, hopefully.
Well that is hopeful!
Hmm..spanish placards should narrow things down a little!
Arriba to the stars?
A film is made using CGI aircraft and we complain about the lack of reality, incorrect markings so on and so forth…
So, the film is made using real aircraft..how commendable. They are all painted in markings they never actually wore during their service and many of them are new-builds so never saw any form of service anyway. We’ll overlook that though.
During the filming there is a mishap and an aircraft is lost. We now complain about the reckless use of precious historical aircraft and question the morals of using such treasured rarities for entertainment.
All the while the masses watching the aforementioned film largely are none the wiser to whether the aircraft they are watching are real or not, and let’s be honest probably don’t care at this stage, but it hopefully got some of them thinking about the facts of what actually happened and the sacrifices made by men who had no choice but to climb into the real aircraft and shoot at, get shot at and often fight to the death with a real enemy in a real sky where they had no choice but to be and in the case of this film had no glorious chapter written in history for an awfully long time. Maybe they will even look these young men up on this new-fangled internet (which incidentally is probably the downfall of the good old fashioned according to much of this anti-logic) and learn the true history of these events where maybe the film made some mistakes and oversights.
But no, you’re right, lets bitch and moan about the fact we don’t get to watch the pretty real aeroplanes in the film.
I for one look forward to going to my local cinema to see it (obviously with my popcorn and coke because I am one of those troublesome disrespectful young folk some of you seem to know so much about)
Wonderfully Wet Whittle!
Thanks for the E28/39 Appreciation chaps!
Sadly the wind was such that we couldn’t risk removing the tail stand – she does stand without but the gusts were murderous!
Regards from us all at the Jet Age Museum
Complete thread drift for which I apologise, but would you be interested in a TU-154M nose gear door at all Ken?
Sorry, back to AV8 cakes!
‘Tis all taken care of!
PM’d just in case!
small chance I can help – haven’t the slightest idea what an Akratork rig is though!
PM inbound just in case
Did anyone else catch the Seafire at Staverton yesterday around 3pmish?
Just a crazy guess here, but presumably because someone wishes to pay £52 of their own money to own something which means more to them than the £52 they would be parting with?
Okay chaps..a taster from the facebook page..
And a link to the museum webiste..
