    Heard 2 months ago a Saudi F-15 got shot down and apparently it happened yesterday again. Do these F-15s use flares? How can the Saudis stop these screw ups? I am sure Lockheed or Northrup wont mind making profits out of this.

    http://www.businessinsider.com/us-china-russia-hypersonic-weapons-2018-3 US General Hyten says no defense against it. ” When asked by Republican Senator Jim Inhofe, the committee chairman, what kind of defenses the US had against such weapons, the general responded, “our defense is our deterrent capability.”
    “We don’t have any defense that could deny the employment of such a weapon against us,” Hyten said.”

    So the size and switching trajectory tech on these missiles really make that much of a difference?

    There is one more thing that is confusing me here and its people calling the Kinzhal an Iskander-M. Google images show me they look different or am I just looking at the wrong pictures. Also the altitude of the iskander-M is 6-50kms while the altitude for Kinzhal if air launched flies at a very high altitude. So for those calling the Kinzhal an Iskander missile what Iskander variant are you trying to compare this missile to? I believe there were people in this forum and other websites making these comparisons. I just want to know what iskander variant do they mean this missile is comparable to?

    @niksi
    This looks like a neutral civilized forum, even those that are bias act professional. F-16.net and Russian defense forum looks like a place where XXXX happen and sometimes they resemble your typical 4chan /k/ users when different opinions are given. I feel like knowing more about SAMs and how they target aerial targets, weapons that aircrafts would use against SAMs, etc.

    My apologies for overlooking the SM-6 and focusing specifically on the SM-3 block 2A tests. Thank you.

    “You’re honestly going to lob one missile per sortie while the enemy is dropping a dozen glide bombs with precision per sortie” Depending on the payload the Kinzhal delivers its usage as conventional or nuclear it can still wipe out mobile defense assets worth billions of dollars. They say the Zircon was tested at mach 8, Iskander-m at mach 6-7 and supposedly based off of wiki (using a references of sources that are no longer available) an ex-british general reports the iskander-m having a 2m accuracy with specifications of going from 20 to 30gs avoiding other ballistic missiles trying to intercept it.

    If you look at interception tests by the USN and THAADs based defenses(had one successful interception) you will realize a high failure rate for intercepting MRBMs. Since its air launched I am sure it will be smaller and harder for a radar to detect in interception. And the maneuvering tech will throw off guidance systems trying to intercept the missile.

    But the Kinzhal will still be useless in the future. 1.It will be obsolete by powerful radars like the an/spy-6 using GaN(in the mid 2020s) to detect its small size. 2. applying AESA sensors they say the K-77m can create a 40 mile lock on using its own sensor to follow their targets(without transmission from aircraft radar) on their own which will work great against responding to different trajectories of the missile your trying to intercept. The US is relying on Japan and Britain for JNAAMs so I dont know how long this will take to be applied on mobile defense systems.

    So will India get Brahmos-2 before US gets a waverunner missile or no? Anyone making bets on who gets a hypersonic cruise missile 1st?

    So is it safe now to assume that if all specs are right for the Kinzhal missile it would be regarded as the greatest SEAD weapon as of now? There have been failed interception tests from the USN against MRBMs and recently a successful interception with a land based defense like the THAADs from a C-17 parachuting a MRBM. MRBMs in which I checked wiki fall in the mach 8-12 category if memory serves me right, this missile is possibly mach 10+. However since its air launched from a interceptor I find it safe to assume it has a lower RCS than a MRBM and it flies in unpredictable trajectories to throw off guidance systems trying to intercept it. Meanwhile the Mig-31 does not need any fancy stealth to get close to any defense system because of this missile’s range.

    Any agreement or disagreement that if specs are true this is regarded as the best SEAD weapon?

    I do know that the highest they have tested the Zircon was at mach 8, http://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/18943/putins-air-launched-hypersonic-weapon-appears-to-be-a-modified-iskander-ballistic-missile Commander in chief Sergei says, “The Kinzhal system substantially boosts the capabilities of the Russian Aerospace Force to respond to any possible act of aggression against our country and along with other strategic weapon systems will help deter possible adversaries from rushing headlong into action… The fast-speed fixed-wing carrier allows delivering a missile with unique performance characteristics to the area of its discharge within minutes. The main propulsion unit mounted on the aero-ballistic missile accelerates a warhead to hypersonic speed within seconds. The missile’s maneuvering at speeds exceeding the speed of sound by several times allows it to reliably breach all air defense and anti-ballistic missile defense systems that exist or are being developed.”
    So it could be mach 7. In regards to unlimited range and talks of their missiles using nuclear propulsion. Wouldn’t the correct term be called ion propulsion? I heard there Mars mission they will use a nuclear reactor for ion propulsion. Is this basically what they mean? I believe their drone torpedo is called the status-6.
