A little ‘bump’ as the restrictions start Monday 12th. I’ve also put up a direct link on FlyOnTrack hot news to the index to all the AICs about restrictions, as well as the 2 direct ones for RIAT and Farnborough

    Everyone likes (positive) feedback so…

Let me pass on a big thanks to everyone who has helped from D&D.
D&D had requested more calls to help check equipment, and also help with their controller training and currency. They are particulary pleased with the results so far – for example, the average number of practice pans and training fixes in a MONTH is 150. On just the Monday-Friday of that first full week (ie: not even the weekend when more fly), they got 124 calls. And practical consequences? Well as long as various technical things, on the Tuesday, they had a controller who was being ‘validated’ for the role. Normally this takes them between 3 and 5 hours. It was all over in only 2 hours, because of the number of training fixes in that period.

So thanks to everyone who has already tried it, BUT remember this wasn’t a one week wonder, they do need them all the time, so keep them coming when you have a minute. I’ve told them also if they can pre-notify a validation (to a particular day), I’m sure enough pilots would make an extra effort then.

I’ve now added a pamphlet about D&D into both the hot news item and the links page on flyontrack – http://flyontrack.co.uk/content/links.asp -first subsection.

I’ve amended the pdf newsletter referenced above to (temporarily) remove the quoted lat/long for the London City VRPs. (They are still there in VOR/DME form). Rob Hill (BMAA) was on the ball and wondered why they were in either Somerset or Holland – leading zero missing, he deduced. Anyway, they are being re-checked and will be re-issued in the pdf. They are correct in ‘official documents’ like the AIP but were wrong from this morning in this pdf from when they were ‘put up’ around 11:00 til about 14:25 UTC. When the lat/longs for the London VRPs re-appear, they will be correct, for the moment they just say ‘being checked’

    ps: ‘Thanks Rob’

Just for info, the same thread is on the following forums in case you want to see/compare what different groups think (no significance to the order other than the order my browser tabs were in today):

One idea I’m pushing to become ‘the norm’ is to get more value out of the 2-yearly meeting with an instructor.

Here http://www.higherplane.flyer.co.uk/bfr-ground.pdf is my current menu of ‘hot topics’ that I now show to anyone coming for a 2-yearly instructor flight. Some items will not be relevant to that pilot, some will already be known, but it’s a trigger mechanism for individual pilots to say that they want to know more about items on it.

The list is also up on the pilot’s noticeboard at my airfield so pilots do not actually have to wait two years to find out about something, it can trigger them to come for a briefing at any time, but they will definitely get the opportunity every two years.

For example at an strut talk I was giving I met a pilot whose ‘strip’ is under an ILS at a major airfield where a ‘listening squawk’ is being trialed. He hadn’t heard of the concept before but thought it a great idea. My concern was that these sort of things are not being discussed as part of the 2 yearly session with an instructor, which was seen as just a flight when it could be so much more. Not everyone follows forums or has time to read magazines

All the winners now on the flyontrack website

I’m just confirming a competition now for the July new charts, will post later, however, can I make a point that was part of the competition just ended – WADDINGTON AIR SHOW RESTRICTIONS start tomorrow 3/07/08 til the 6th, and remember the ‘standard’ 6 mile radius restriction up to 7000′ expands a bit for the Red Arrows displays on the 5th and 6th.

See http://www.nats-uk.ead-it.com/aip/current/aic/mauve/EG_Circ_2008_M_045_en.pdf for a diagram and more details.

Well three winners – quite a diverse group – one spamcan/Hinton Lark BWPA member, one Jabiru BMAA member with 278 ‘strips’/airfields in the book and one with his first licence issue paperwork sitting in the CAA right now! Over 50 entries, so approx a 1 in 18 chance of being a winner. – see http://www.flyontrack.co.uk – if you want to see names.

I would look up when the next chart issue happens (and next competition) but the CAA website is down!

ALSO: the list of known (at this time) restrictions for the Summer (red arrows, duxford, old warden) on the same site has been updated – look for the ‘eyes’.

Just a little reminder this competition ends Saturday night – – 5 minutes work at the most, no entry fee. Odds usually 1 in 20 to 30 range, same this time. Better odds than winning a tenner in the lottery I believe, free entry and prize worth more!

Irv. The competition is a brilliant idea.

Thanks – If this one goes well, the competition for a half-million Southern will open as this one closes, as it is due out Mid March. (oh no, 😮 more Southern bias! I must look up when the others come out – let me think, where can I do that? – oh yes, it’s the sort of thing I’d find on Flyontrack links page! 😉

What does the NMS label mean on the 7000 squawks?

    No Mode S

And if the ‘level’ shown is 3 digits, it’s a flight level, if it’s two digits, it’s an altitude (converted by the radar ‘knowing’ the QNH, as the transponder will always transmit a flight level)
