Black Mike…..Still useful and doing its bit at the Leuchars displays by opening up for cockpit photos and making money for the fund. Long may it continue.
Soppy I know, but first phone call of the day to the other half.
Her in Scotland – Me in Kazakhstan.
Listening to her lilting Welsh tones always cheers me up.

I know that it’s not at Duxford and the photo quality and framing leaves much to be desired (a miserable day, weather wise, and I was still learning how to pan and shoot), but I thought that this image of Sally B, making a very low level pass along the runway at the Biggin Hill Air Show in May 1979, might interest some. You can get some idea of the height of the pass by reference to the figures in the foreground. They don’t do it like that now!
Is that someone waving out of the Bomb Aimers position in that pic ?
Sorry for the minor thread creep, but just had a look at Wikipedia page for the Snargasher, which led me on to the R.S.3 / R.S.4 Desford. States there that it was in flyable condition until 1973, but I was under the impression that it was still airworthy at Strathallan until later then that…. Can anyone confirm or deny ?
What was that movie with Tommy Lee Jones flying Apache helicopters, in the end the Apache’s duel with JA-35 Drakens, cant remember the name of the movie
If I remember rightly, it was called “Firebirds”, with Nicholas Cage as well. Not Oscar winning material ( in my opinion) 😉 !!!

Cracking pictures!! – I also remember visiting the Ark and Albion (possibly also Hermes?) at Portsmouth Navy Days a few years after this.
Is that HMS Belfast in the background of the first photo?
Re HMS Belfast, if it was indeed 1963 then it’s unlikely. The ship left Singapore on 26 March 1962 for the UK where she made a final visit to Belfast and after an exercise in the Mediterranean was paid off on 24 August 1963.
What Beach?
What Aeroplane?
What Manoeuvre?
Clue, I took this in 1983.
Beach – Dunno
Areoplane – Scottish Aviation Bulldog
Manoeuvre – Stall Turn ?
And could easily have been released – cut the trace, or cut the hook.
There’s no honour in bashing an animal over the head once its been vanquished.
Wasn’t on the rig at the time of capture, but do know that to “release” it would have involved dropping it 80-100 feet back into the sea. As for bashing it over the head, I would hazard that it was done through necessity rather than a lack of Honour.
Occasionally there are times – for right or wrong – when you have to take a course of action that isn’t necessarily your first choice.
