Thoroughly enjoyable show despite the cancellation of the Canberra and RNHF Sea-Hawk ( was particularly looking forward to that having never seen one in the skies before).
Highlights for me – Sally B and BBD, Sea Fury, 2 seat Spit, and a rather sprightly display from the locally based prototype Bulldog.
Thanks to all involved.
“Can anyone please give me a detailed history of a) how the Wellignton ended up in Loch ness, and b) what the circumstances were that allowed it to be pulled out? How did the recovery all come together? Who did it? What was involved, etc?”
Dave,
I have a copy of “One of Our Aircraft: The Story of the Loch Ness Wellington” by Robin Holmes at home which charts the entire story from discovery to recovery, along with the aircraft’s operational history.
I am away from home at the moment and won’t be back until the beginning of next week, but will happily forward the info to you then if nothing else comes up in the meantime.
Also scheduled to display at East Fortune on the 29th for us air-show starved Scots !!
In that case, I guess that Aim, Fire,….. DUCK, was the order of the day !!!
Before that, ( this is something I’m sure I was told as a child ), was there not a system in place where angled blades were mounted on props to deflect any bullets that may have hit the props. If I’m talking rot please tell me, but if not, how effective were these ?
Does anybody know if airworthy Historic aircraft at any of the ” At risk,” locations were flown out to other bases before the series of hurricanes hit – as per the evacuation of the the majority of the local populace.
Apologies if this has been covered already.
Comet C2 And Shackleton both landed at (shortish) grass strip at Strathallan. Mind you, main gear collapse of the the Comet on touchdown may have assisted it’s braking potential !!
Not A specific type, but “Bomber” by everyone’s favorite easy listening band – Motorhead ! Love Missile F- 111 by Sigue Sigue Sputnik ( their one and only hit I think). Also, Arlo Guthrie mentioned ” A Big Airliner ” in Coming into Los Angeles, but, if you know the song, one can only assume that old Arlo was probably too stoned to appreciate a specfic aircraft type…..Man!!!
Anyone know whether the Blenheim / Bolingbroke restoration for static display or to an airworthy condition ?
Eddywinch 82,
Having seen the Blackpool Vulcan at the weekend, would say that I don’t think that there will be much left to preserve shortly…..in a shocking state.
I remember watching the Mossie at Strathallen when I was but a nipper – a fair while ago, but an indelible memory. Fantastic aircraft, beautiful setting, and a sound never to be forgotten. On the subject of sound, what are your favorites?, a crackling Merlin, a grumbling Griffon, the whine of a Goblin…….??
Managed to get one (rather poor) picture through gap in doors – couldn’t gain access to hanger unfortunately.
