The Royal Navy has been given a good enough shafting for my liking and in my opinion is in a sorry state but hey at least we are not an island with 90% of our trade going by sea.

People seem to be taking this as gospel and it must be pointed out this is a supposed plan drawn up for the next SDR if the Government has lost it and wants to gouge defence even more. It’s basically a plan to allow the RAF to do cuts the way it seems best rather than letting the MoD f*ck it up for them. I would hazard a guess that the RAF could lose some jobs at the top and trim the higher ranks to save cash without detriment to capability or experience.

That’s the press for you they have nothing better to do it seems and they seem to have realised that Defence is a miniscule higher on the national agenda so think they can sell more papers. I must add however that it is not that farfetched at all and is maybe inevitable that it will happen.

It is indeed a nice ship and one of many options that the RAN could choose from and has the advantage of modularity in construction.

Harry I think our views are similar, I don’t think brazil needs another carrier and would do better to spend the money elsewhere ideally starting with some decent surface combatants then maybe an LPH/amphibious capacity and so on. Going for a carrier that will be a big white elephant seems daft to me. Spending the cash getting decent surface combatants would be my priority as well as improving deployment ratios and training would be priorities. Then with further funding I would add some replenishment ships similar to the Aegir 18R and start deploying overseas and working with European friends and making connections abroad. Then with even more funding I would add the higher end amphibious capabilities starting with something very close to the Mistral as it covers all the bases. Finally if I had the need and the funds I would add the carrier and air group into the mix basically a staged expansion rather than trying to maintain a carrier that I have little need for.

The Romeo and Juliet designs are still on paper and nobody is building them whereas the CVF will be built and will be cheap enough to run or else the RN would not be getting it. Furthermore the trend is for larger designs and operating a CVF class would not be much more than operating a CdG derivative so the larger design would be more sensible.

Look at satellite photographs I’m pretty sure they could build the accommodation needed on the triangle of land to the north east right beside the base, large numbers of civvies would no doubt be used for maintenance etc so they would live off base. The land available should allow enough houses to be build for instructors and trainees as well as other facilities or maybe a bit more outlandish RAF Mona could be built over to provide all the space needed. There is without a doubt room for what is needed and not many people living locally to object.

Exactly it would take months to move disperse RAF assets that if they don’t get destroyed on the ground or stuck at a base with no runway or taxiway. Far fetched but what are we going to do if **** happens we cannot see the future.

I doubt they have heard it but it does make perfect sense in some ways especially in ‘peacetime’ but it still seems like a daft idea. There are some plans to close many of the RAF stations and concentrate all the assets at a few large bases which would save money but be daft in other ways.

I meant largest by number of aircraft stationed there and personnel rather than the size of the base itself as it would have over 120 aircraft as well as all the instructors and trainees not to mention the helicopter side of things. Brize Norton may rival it for the busiest RAF base but it would be pretty close as all those hawks and trainees would generate dozens of sorties each day and the air controllers would have a busy time of it coordinating lots of small fast aircraft at all levels.

In future i can see all of the transport assets at Brize as the fleet will be pretty small enough for one base with around 24 J model hercs, 25 A400M, 6 C-17 and around 4 A330 MRTT’s.

EDIT: Just remembered if both RAF Linton-on-Ouse and RAF Leeming were closed and the aircraft moved to RAF Valley it would without a doubt be the busiest UK base maybe even busiest European base as you would also have the turboprop trainer fleets based there. Is there even enough room for all those aircraft??

I think if this goes ahead which it has a good chance of doing it would make RAF Valley the busiest and possibly largest RAF base as there are over 120 Hawk’s in the current aircraft fleet. I do have doubts about concentrating so many aircraft into one base and concentrating all fast jet training in one area. Maybe I’m just a crazy paranoid person but I still have reservations.

I’m aware of that Brazil is a friendly country and will no doubt be a good friend but the reason I mentioned it is that it may pop up and the question could be asked if they wanted to buy a CVF. I have no doubt that it would be squashed but is none the less something to think about. What you say is none the less true in regards to the regions past and its stance on the matter, the history also explains Chile’s stance on the matter.

The Brazilian carrier question is no doubt an interesting question and so are most things to do with South Americas largest power and one of the world’s future leaders.

Scooter, it would be an option as it is around the correct size and would be affordable although would need converted to CATOBAR for use with Rafales if they are purchased.

I agree with the sentiment of not posting helicopter numbers but I’m positive they know all that the enemy know all they need to know via the internet. Also the fact that they can sit and watch the ISAF airbases daily they perhaps even have people on the inside local people who work on the base that report back what they see every day. I would bet that the enemy have more accurate information than many of the aviation enthusiasts and members of the armed forces. So it’s not that much of a big deal.

In my opinion the design has more teeth than what is needed by Australia and as pointed out lacks the Helicopter facilities that I would argue are a must rather than an option.

Swerve I thought the Brazilians were politically on the side of the Argentines in respect to the Falklands in believing that they should be Argentine rather than British, I’m not sure what the current situation is. I would not object to a Brazilian CVF as it would be beneficial to the UK and our relations with Brazil. We could charge a fee but should also get a workshare if the propulsion stays the same as the UK CVF but if not i would still want the UK to get some of the work such as aircraft elevators etc.

I’ve no idea how the hell quadbike managed to somehow allow that thought to progress from brain to keyboard. It’s a carrier so it must be able to operate aircraft that we A. Have or B. Will have. The only options are Ski Jump or Catapult so it must have one or the other every image clearly shows a Ski Jump and there is a long history of should it have catapults. He clearly has put no thought into that post or even looked up what the CVF is or seen a picture or anything at all.

Sorry for the rant but come on were using the internet here the largest collection of knowledge known to man.

Well this thread went off topic really fast. Brazil’s best bet would mainly depend on the outcome of the current fighter competition if the Rafale is chosen I would say adding the Naval version to a larger fleet would be a wise move. The CVF might be an option if France decides to build PA2 they could build an additional unit for and with cooperation of Brazil however the UK might block the sale or access to the design. There are no real alternatives for a CATOBAR carrier as the CdG derivative would need re-design work and would still not be ideal due to its compact size. The option of a new design would be very costly and possibly hard to justify within brazil especially when something could be bought cheaper or the money simply spent on other things.

I would even ask why Brazil needs a replacement carrier I know they have one now but many nations have had one in the past and going for more useful vessels such as amphibious ships would be an idea and better use of funds. Chile is again looking into acquiring such a ship and doing the same would be a better idea than going for an expensive display carrier. The option that looks suitable is the Mistral class which is made in France who Brazil seem to be doing lots of business with, who knows next could be some FREMM frigates to go with those subs and possible carrier or LPH.

    Just my thoughts:D
