They were certainly going right throughout the 50’s since a lot of the photos in the IWM archives could be ordered via them. Many gave the impression of being photos of photos.

To be precise I think you will find that the Swordfish prototype (the F.2038) was , in fact, the TSR II ( Torpedo Spotter Reconnaissance II)
An earlier private venture Fairey design (the F.1875), when fitted with a Pegasus, was referred to as the TSR Mk. 1

There was a Carvair operating out of Lanseria down here in S.A. quite recently.

Noting the direction of travel ( prevailing wind?), time of year and some of the other characteristics, I would not discount it being a piece of litter initially carried up in a thermal. Light plastic sheeting, foil bags and kids’ novelty balloons all give odd reflections at height.

    No Problem 🙂
A big trench was dug out with bulldozers -apparently about 500m long and 15-20m deep alongside the airfield. A large amount of redundant equipment of all sorts was then hauled into it.
The Stirlings were towed in, their undercarriages retracted and the wings hacked off. Eventually the entire “grave” was bulldozed back over.
As I understood it the EAF only looked over the surface at a later date.
I would be interested in any confirmation that the kit was actually dug up by the Egyptians. IIRC we were informed it was a somewhat expanded MiG 21 base in the 70’s.

Thanks for that . My father watched them buried at Kasfereet post-war and we triggered the RAF Museum via Jack Bruce in the late 70’s to the episode.
I just wondered why the term “alleged” crept in.

“That was decades ago and the allegedly spotted Stirling scrapyard in Egypt was long cleared.”

Would anybody care to elaborate on this statement?

It did -as the Tu-98 “Backfin” – a forerunner of the “Blinder”
    Take a look at http://www.avia-tu.ru/tu98.php
    It did fly.

My bet would be a 58 sqn ( if its a GE code ) Mk. V.
(Possibly, if it is “T” P5002 ( according to JDR’s Bomber Squadrons of the RAF)

FWIW 615 appear to have used the code KW during period in question -tending perhaps to support the 79 Sqn case.
Its not conclusive ,as codes were often swopped and changed to create confusion to the opposition’s intelligence efforts.

“NV” could well be 79 Sqn.( B Flight of 32 Sqn according to John Rawlings.)
They went to France in May 1940 .
It could well have been abandoned there during the retreat.

“My latest spat with a film and you’ll probably all laugh was the new pirates of the Caribbean, I know its just a fun film but seeing a British 98 gun First rate ship of the Line, sunk at a single pass by a couple of mangy pirate ships without returning a single shot and then the whole British fleet turn tale and run was too much to bear. Any Pirate that came within half a mile of such a magnificient Ship or even a frigate for that matter with an 19th Century British crew would be a foolish boy.Why does Hollywood insist on making us Brits the butt of all their films surely they can make a good film without insulting our ancestors. Nelson must be turning over in his grave.”

If he’s seen the film I expect he’s still rolling about laughing.
