My dear late father “had” Concorde 002 as his responsibility for preservation when it arrived at Yeovilton in the mid 70’s. With an enthusiatic group of volunteers (002 Squadron R.I.P.) plus a lot of begged, borrowed and stolen help from the aircraft industry it was put into a state for conservation and ,thank God,got its hangarage. The real cost and effort was pretty exorbitant (and well hidden from bean counters I suspect) even then. Looking at the above posting by CKing, I cannot but agree with the “hangarage” sentiment. But is it realistic for all the Concordes currently extant? I think not.
Once again the problem surely begs the establishment of a national policy on historic aircraft preservation – a point which I know many members of this forum appreciate. Any comments?

Its “SAM Missiles” which gets my goat. One could write a book on the idiocy of reporters. It’s not the truth -its news!
Almost as bad as the continuity howlers in commercial films about the military or aviation in general.

Wasn’t there a fracas some time ago about a Northrop Company Model, allegedly classified, found for sale on e-bay that looked like a growth attack version of the YF23? Pictures of the model were in the american aviation press as I recall.

“It was the first four engined jet to fly in the world”
    “WHAT?!!!!!”
I think there were at least half a dozen before then so presume that is not what you meant.
(Now there will probably be a rustle of anoraks pulling out a sheaf of earlier machines from the USA, Germany , Russia etc.) 🙂

The engine bulkhead seems to agree with Camel drawings. What looks like the centre-line rib in the middle of the cabane, plus the wide splay of the centre-section struts, points towards a typical F1.

Hi Sainz. I wonder if you can check with your Tu-22 contact?
The F-14 is tucked in to around the 8 o’clock position relative to the Tu and slightly low , I would suggest that the escorting aircraft would not risk getting that close in ahead of the wing of the Tu. Thus a shot from the Tu cockpit is unlikely.
For this and other reasons I think the “set ” of the picture mitigates towards a picture taken from the tail end of the intercepted aircraft.
The Tu22R has a large , cut off low set stabiliser and ,as far as I am aware, no camera port in that area to give such an angle of shot, which certainly looks like being from a hand-held camera ,being in focus to such a close target.
Which brings us to look at the object in the top right of the image. This is largely in shadow ,with the exception of the sun illuminated small cylindrical object on its “trailing edge”.
I suspect that what we are looking at is a bit of tailplane ,slightly higher set on the aircraft than the camera, with a possible small ESM aerial of sorts on its trailing edge. Its a bit too hefty to be a static discharger! I don’t think its a fuel jettison pipe either, but I could well be mistaken.
This enclosed shot of a Tu-16 perhaps helps to support this supposition -note that this lump is by no means on all Badgers.
Perhaps your contact was on Tu-16’s at some time?
In any event it’s still a very unusual shot ( is that an AGI below?) . Please don’t misinterpret my nit-pick as anything other than an expression of interest.

Typos. I remember reading about “mental fittings” in one AP from the 20’s.

Understood. However, assuming that the object in the top right of the image is a part of the structure of the aircraft from which the photograph was taken – from where on a Tu-22 would you suggest the shot was taken from?

No, without wishing to trigger yet another pedantic exchange, that is not the precise definition. It is an MICV ( Mechanised Infantry Combat Vehicle) but that is besides the point I was trying to allude to.

Warriors are not “Tanks” and that is very important point when dealing with emotive issues involving uneducated civilians.

Somehow I don’t think that was taken from a Tu-22 of any description. Possibly from a Tu-16 tail gun position?

JDK Agreed. Looks very much like it. Might that be Victoria/Valentia conversion going on in the Gordon picture? Possibly at RAF Hinaidi at a long shot?
