“The French military procurement agency (DGA) has notified Sagem (Safran
group ), at december 2009’s end, an important deal for the French Air Force,
as part of the Modular Air-to-Ground Armament (AASM) program. The deal
includes : – a multi-year procurement of 3,400 AASM, of which a first secu-
…………….red batch of 680 units,
– the development and integration of a last gen. GPS module,
– qualification and industrialization of the inertial/GPS terminally …………….laser-guided version.
Developed and produced by Sagem, the AASM armament family is made of a
guidance kit and a range expansion kit adaptable to existing 250kgs bombs. The AASM is also available for 125, 500 and 1,000kgs bombs.
Shot from a secure distance, day or night and in all meteorological conditions, the AASM has a range superior to 50kms. Possibly launched from
low altitude and with a strong offset in targeting position, it offers a very high precision and a vertical terminal capacity, particularly adapted to asy-
metrical situations. It thus answers perfectly the new bombing needs in heavyly hilly landscapes or urban environments, as much for planned missions as for opportunity shots.
The new version with inertial/GPS/laser guidance will widen the AASM’s
family that already included two Rafale-qualified versions : inertial/GPS and
inertial/GPS/infrared. It will allow amongst other possibilities the precision firing on moving targets. This new contract comes as an addition to a first order of 750 AASM attributed to Sagem for the French Air Forces, the AASM having been deployed to Afghanistan in the last two years on the Rafale.
The AASM is also commercialized by MBDA as part of its global armament offering aiming ( lol ) to meet the needs of international air forces.
