Yes jackjack…
…more or less, lol.
Damocles ( or litening3, for that matter ) can launch/guide the
laser guided version of it but…the best feature of that weapon is
WHEN IT IS NOT guided to the target with precision.
This old snippet is best at explaining the autonomous nature of
the thing :
There have been tests like this one where terminal acquisition succeeded
under different conditions of incorrect adressing by the plane initial
guidance ( volontary off-bore as here, wrong/degraded GPS coordinates,
etc ).
In a nutshell, the AASM is a modular adaptative kit that makes the
bomb into a stand-off weapon. I’ll remind you of the numbers quickly :
15kms low/50-70kms high and fast added range
90 degrees initial freedom from launching platform
autonomous terminal acquisition ( which actually stems as much from the manoeuvrability than the guidance ).
What is weird is that no one commented on the other great success
of the Raffy at ATLC09 Al-Dhafra.
It finally repeated for all to see something that had been done in France
earlier for the sole benefit of our Indian friends, namely a full-swing role mission with Mica interception of EAD planes followed by delivery
of its AASMs.
Not to further the debate out of thread’s intent but that is exactly what
the AdlA had hoped from an OMNIROLE fighter. Other planes ( multirole ) can accomplish that but Rafale was designed for it and will grow for a long while in abilities over successive standards.
IMHO that demo will do as much to sell it than BVRsPHOON or
dogfightsF-22. Let’s remember that it is a one-plane swissknife
( come on Switzerland, catch my drift, lol ) alternative.
Countries getting the F-22 ( ONE ) or F-35 will complement them with another type ( maybe Raffy for their Navy ? ).
Countries not willing or able to do so will find Rafale’s beauty to be more than skin deep.
TC
Ad, lol.
Good year all!
I hope the wishes already received by you and yours are holding true.
Here are a few remarks in total disorder on this lazy sunday morning.
To complement Scorpio82’s very good educated guess and JackJack’s
reply, i would like to offer this link to the simple fact sheet of the AASM
provide by the French govt dedicated site :
http://www.ixarm.com/Technical-card,20860?var_recherche=AASM
The metric day/night version of the AASM using hybrid inertial/GPS
guidance with an infrared imaging system.
As such, it can leave the plane on GPS and strike on IR sensor!
That is why some American airmen in ‘STAN have gotten the habit of
calling it a “magic bomb”.
Check out the upcoming versions to find mention of a dedicated anti-
radar one.
In answer to mrmalaya, you are pointing in the difficult region where
the gen war is taking place.
The definitions that cover those generations of sort have come from the United States. It is in itself reasonable since they have the F-22 as a top-most tech A/C to offer in comparison.
BY those standards, Rafale is a fourpointfive plane. It cannot be only fourth gen because of its omnirole capacity but was though out from the beginning
to be upgraded continuously to always remain top line four+.
BY those standards, Rafale may not enter the fifth gen arena on account
of not being inceptually based on VLO design and that is not denied by
anyone including Dassault; They use “discreet” to mention the “.5” aspect
of the plane’s design that makes it LO in most directions.
( True fifth gen as F-22 supposedly VLO in ALL directions. )
So yes, Rafale is a ( maybe THE ) very modern actual ( 2010??? ) and future fighter if you don’t dabble in “gens”.
Finally, to answer this, by jackjack, i found this :
http://3reglescitoyen.over-blog.com/article-cuba-achete-le-rafale-42584034.html
You may have to gooogletranslate it if your french wont do
but it is worth it, hearty laugh assured! LOL.
Are you both sure?
Full aero brake and a nice nose wheelie braking skid?
Ridiculous!
No, performances DO NOT depend on requirements. Requirements do however define MINIMUM acceptable performances.
…by pcfem…………………………………………………
So on a basis of a minimum requirement of 110 KpH.
a Ferrari could be chosen for moving furniture???????
If you need a plane to operate at a given altitude, at a
given speed for tactical drops, it does not need
supercruise. If the same plane needs supercruise,
that is a different requirement with immediate impact
on performances and subsequently design/redesign.
Let’s picture this my friend : your country, of course
understandably the best in the world, makes the very
first Mach 7+ ultra-stealth bomber with a range of
speed for bombing between 5.3 and 6.4 Machs.
Sadly, the best bombs and missiles you have made
separate safely and efficiently only under 4.7 Mach!!!
Darn, aint it too bad that performances are not
dictated by requirements as you are now stuck with
an unusable world’s best multi-billion bird. Shucks!
Those pics…
have been accompanied by these three versions :
A- Mentioned here, years ago, against Italians;
B- Against the Germans over the years ( do remember
the shared geography and the French commitment to
German territorial integrity up to nukes : i.e. the planes
meet very often )
C- Last year against the Spanish.
Those for the apparence of a Rafale’s HUD.
But again, without situation info or RoE……
YES! Indeed, thanx hammer.
And even though being French will lessen this,
i do believe thay you’ve outlined why the Rafale should
win. The on-going “war between F-18 and Gripen NG in
the ranks allows Jobim and Lula to over-rule easy, softly!
But, and it’s a big butt, (oops, typo) the French Govt has
this tendancy do make things difficult. In this instance,
the importance of the Franco-Brazilian pact should be crucial.
If things hinged on tech only, U.S. having discredited
themselves supposedly in the past, the deal would be:
smaller plane with a big role in it VS
bigger plane with smaller role in it.
I found this very interesting as it was the NG basis of late :

We’ll see soon enough, won’t we?
Sorry,
I must have “written quickly”. I obviously meant that the
indication on the main screen should be linked to one or
many pages/screens accessing fuel data/use.
I do reiterate ( after checking the doc. ) that both of these
screens are for emergency use.
The fact was explained by someone that the pilot “knows”
by virtue of engrams the say, twothumbstap+one middle
finger squeeze sequence that will bring up his fuel/refuel
screeens. Although in present case, tapping want should
do the trick!
Will try to find a fuel screen pic for all though.
Good day all.
A small contribution…
to answer scorpio on the difficulty to read the small fuel
display at lower right hand.
If you go to the secretprojects link provided by ROM_un,
you will find the very first screen asking for refueling
and in the box’n’arrows pic, the same two displays are
given as emergency screens.
You can bet eyerything is accessible on that main screen
Paris-Marseille par exemple!
Agreed with H_K!
I am but the newbie but i have the advantage of being
a native french speaker and when a reporter talks about
“what a reporter said” ( even accounting for them being
one and the same ) my personal mili experience says that
static must be overwhelming on that line!
The very first thing that strikes me about this particular
instance is the consistency of the referent info pieces as far
as their extreme relativity!
As i was not yet privy to your discussions on the subject,
I nonetheless engaged the enemy ( lack of info ) somewhere
else and spinned myself into something worthy of web’s
conspiracy theoricist of the month, LOL.
At the very same time, nothing worthy came along for quite
a while and here i am!
The following link is that of a thread i got up in another forum
and you are more than welcome to skip/scroll to where the
action about Al-Dhafra picks up.
You will find the date correlations necessary to give proper
value to the exercise.
http://www.network54.com/Forum/211833/thread/1258064875/last-1260479420/Rafale+news.
……………OK! So…maybe we were not privy to essential
engagements/sparings! Maybe even in that tight-knitted
community, there could be ways for the brass to “shut up”
enough pilots to cover a simple scenario :
as was mentioned in one of those forums of which we are
one, all primaries were on the attack side and our militaries
are more or less calmly digesting data pertaining to pick-ups
and locks obtained in a skyful of M-2000s and F-16s.
I would welcome anyone’s properly thought and formulated
advice/opinion in this matter. Hoping it could spark someone!
