Just finished ‘War in the Fourth Dimension: US electronic warfare, from the Vietnam War to the present’ (Albert Price) Very, very good. EW is not ‘just that’, I found out
Currently reading ‘Leave No Man Behind: The Saga of Combat Search and Rescue’ (George Galdorisi)
Thank you all for your information π
There’s a nice early Scooter being restored at Oshkosh (i believe) – regular updates on Warbird Information Exchange
Almost forgot about the Warbird Information Exchange forums. (How could I ? . . . )
Thank you bringing my attention back to that site π
Nope! Even de russians don’t make them that ugly:D.
Only the French could come up with something like that:diablo:.
It’s an Hurel-Dubois HD-34. About eight of the beasts were build.
Three are still around.
π Thanks for enlightening me, Stony π
What about this?
What is that . . ?! Must be Russian?
Been there, done it
‘Fire in the sky: The air war in the South Pacific’ (Eric M. Bergerud). And ‘Into Laos: The story of Dewey Canyon II/Lam Son 719; Vietnam 1971’ (Keith William Nolan) The last one is not strictly aviation related, but with a superficially ‘twist’
Very interesting material you got there, Jack.
I always had a soft spot for this fine little plane. (My favorit in FS9. Mostly ‘flying’ VFR, you have a good view from it)
In the books I have read, the pilots expresses great devotion to it. (Except for the ‘sauna environment’ in it due to inadequate air-conditioning)
Dear Jesper,
DANG! I posted a long reply on that rescue mission you had already posted and had to delete it.Jack E. Hammond
Hi Jack, sorry about that. π
But, why don’t you post it anyway? I think the story is so interesting, that it deserves to be told again.
And as I do not have that book at hand (Borrowed it from the library, and those guys want their books back π ), I can’t refer it in detail.
But what I do remember is, that the story – and the book – was highly intriguing.
J
Like to see the Bronco in the air too. But guess I ain’t got much of a chance to see it were I live. π Got a glimpse – and laid ears to the very distinct sound – of a Bronco two years ago in France. If my memory serves me right, there is a French owned in the vicinity of MontΓ©limar?
. . . . . . .
I remember reading a story of how a Bronco landed on the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos to pick up a Special Forces team. Couldn’t do that with a AT-6 either. . . . .
Guess it was in ‘A Lonely Kind of War: Forward Air Controller, Vietnam’ (Marshall Harrison)
He extracts a LRRP team – almost caught by NVA’s – from a piece of dirt road. Also inserted a patrol by parachute; 3 (4?) men sitting in the cargo bay.
One of my all time favorite books, together with ‘Flying Black Ponies: The Navy’s Close Air Support Squadron in Vietnam’ (Kit Lavell). Two very good books on the Bronco!
A very interesting, mind-wrenching, thought. Hmmm . . . If to choose from any shelf, it would be:
A1-H: Sitting behind that big, 18 cylinder, Wright R-3350 radial would be a dream coming through. π (Very good described by Richard S. Drury in “My Secret War”)
OV-10 Bronco. Gotta soft spot for this kite. (Could bring the Missus along for a ride. She might be quiet for a while, for once π )
http://www.avsim.com and http://www.simulation would be the 1st places I’d look.
But, FS2000 is known to be very demanding to any rig. And not that good visually . . .
FS2004 would be my suggestion of a flight sim with the best “cost/benefit ratio”. You can get tons of add ons, more than you’ll ever get the time to explore! π
Guess it can be obtained to a very reasonable price anywhere.
I’m still running it on my rig. And ain’t got no plans to go for FSX :p (Just my two β¬-cents π )
Jesper, did you know Mr Mason was flying Col. Moore around Ia Drang? He’s referred to as ‘Grunt 6’ in Chickenhawk…
as you said, an unforgettable book π
I remember the name “Grunt 6”, but did not know it was him. Interesting information, thanks π Better borrow that book in the library . . . . again π
At least they used the correct model of Hueys….something most films don’t bother with.
You usually get Vietnam era aircraft (short cabin UH-1B/Cs) trying to pass for something newer…like the current USMC Hueys…
or Newer aircraft trying to pass for a Vietnam era aircraft..Bell 212s/412s.
Did not pay attention to that (Guess my eye acceptet the “picture” as “right”? π ) But the description of the courage of the slick and gunship pilots in the scenes in “We were Soldiers Once . . . And Young” is quite close to what I had of impressions of “hot LZ’s” after reading “Chickenhawk” by Robert Mason. A book I’ll never forget.
“We Were Soldiers Once . . And Young”
Just watched “We Were Soldiers Once . . And Young”.
The F-100 fighter bombers – alas computer animated (Does this count in this tread?? ) – were not the best I’ve ever seen.
Just look at what flightsim freeware designers can do! So I think they should have paid more attention to detail . . .
PS. By the way: The A1-H’s . . which were those? They looked real to my eye??
Reads:
“Bury Us Upside Down” (Call Sign) Misty F-100 FFAC’s flying the Huns low and dirty
“My Secret War” A1-H pilot over Laos
Thanks guys. I did not think that there actually was any left. (Read somewhere else in this forum, that a 40+ was captured by the North Vietnamese army) But – you never know – there could have been some spirit hearted people out there, doing their best to keep yet another vintage bird in the air π
