And given that they have all been rotated through Shawbury for long periods of storage at various times since being delivered to even up maintainance life I would imagine that they will be sold off to other air forces rather than being grounded.

Yes, it was also a flyer at the time. The guy that built them also built a B-29 but that crashed on it’s ninth flight.

Bah, that was the week before the Paris Air Show and we came down from Scotland but didn’t do East Anglia until the trip back. The Angels had moved on by then. 🙁

I worked for National Power in their sales and marketing team in 1989 and we hired one to fly potential customers around G-SKSC. It was grounded for part of the time due to high winds but it flew over London for a few days and I flew in it over Gloucester.

I remember quiziing the crew about the prototype and they said that it was the first time that any of the passengers had ever shown any real interest or knowledge in the craft.

For a while the fibre glass cabin of one in Korean Olympic marks sat outside at Lasham before moving to Boscombe Down probably in support of the military ZH762.

It all went downhill for AI and eventually the company was sold to Alan Bond who then sold it on.

Ah, Lakenheath show 1970 – I remember it like yesterday – gin clear skies all day, one of every USAFE type in static, burger in one hand and can of Mountain Dew in the other. Arrived at 0815 as some of the static was still arriving. Typical USAF show with no barriers, so you could get the perfect shots providing you got there before ‘joe public’! Here are four of my shots from that day.
    1. C-133 Cargomaster arriving.
    2. Convair MC-131A Samaritan departing after the show.
    2. F-100D of based 492 TFS, 48TFW
    3. Douglas C-47A of HQ 3rd AF

Wonderful and not a blue cone in sight!

    MAGIC MAGIC MAGIC

Thanks for that, that brings back many memories. I think we got there even earlier than 0815 as I seem to remember that we wree asked by the security police to return behind the public barrier on the way back from having virtually walked all over the airfield and logged everything on the base.

    Those were the days.

Anyone got any shots from the Lakenheath show in 1970, or the Upper Heyord tiger meet the following year, or the Bolivian CV440s at Mildenhall in 1972?

The first Greenham show was in 1973 and the C-121 came in 1974 as a replacement for the planned C-124 Globemaster. It carried an Air Force band who weren’t really expecting to have to play at an airshow in Southern England but they immediately got themselves ready and did the business.

Glory days of the Air Tattoo.

They’ll be able to coin it in during the run-up to Bonfire night then 😉

    Kylie? That’s not sad.

    Moggy

Kylie, no, I did go to see her at the NRC and EC as well.

But going to a filming of Des and Mel amongst all the OAPs and running to get a seat in the front row probably is though.

I went to see Kylie on the Des and Mel show. Actually, I felt really sad the other night because a small kid came round trick or treating and I had forgotten it was Halloween and I didn’t have anything in the house and it was absolutely throwing it down good style. I felt a real swine saying no.

I then found some stuff and grabbed an umberella and went after them but they had gone. His mum was pushing a toddler in a push chair as well. 🙁
