You seem to believe that it is wiser to invest in a purely European stealth technology.

I would argue that it is wiser NOT to spend money on stealth technology if you can buy it more cheaply from someone else, like the US, I think you should do so.

Frankly, I think that it was wise for Europeans to have invested in Airbus, which produces greater economic value than pure military technologies such as stealth.

The likelihood of European countries going to war in the near future seems slim. I would invest in my economy instead of my Air Force. Germany’s economy needs serious help.

If the US wants to sell me top of the line fighter aircraft, without my having to pay all of the development costs of doing myself, fine and good. I’d buy JSFs and take the money I could have invested in stealth, etc. into kicking Boeing’s ass a bit more.

What sadden’s me about this is that there are fewer and fewer new fighter aircraft for me to discuss and enjoy. I’m afraid I’m going to have to start following those little R/C robots soon… What do they call them again? Oh, yeah… UCAVs…

The problem was called “Buy or Make” in business school.

Is it cheaper for you to buy it or make it yourself? With the JSF, the question is the same.

    Buy or Make?

Smaller European countries realize that it is cheaper to buy the JSF than make it themselves. Several countries have done this analysis and reached the same conclusion.

I don’t think it’s a bad decision. Money not invested in a home grown European JSF can be spent on other more important things.

I used to work for the Okinawa Prefectural Governent not long after I left University.

Actually if you consider the number of flights made out of US bases in Okinawa, their saftey record is pretty good.

That said, Okinawa and Okinawans in general have never had much love for the US military. For both economic and philosophical reasons, they have long wanted the US military to leave Okinawa. Any crashes, incidents, near misses provides them with an opportunity to demand that US forces leave.

Someone’s daydreams posted in the internet and taken a bit too seriously.

Reminds me of when I was a kid drawing imaginary fighters.

BTW it seems like Italy begins to understand that the jsf is a european R&D money trap : they have just get in the neuron project.

Neuron is not a JSF replacement.

As far as I know, Italy has not left the JSF program. If what you say is true, they have just joined a UAV/UCAV project.

UCAV development is a new and growing field with a lot of untested ideas and technology. It makes sense for European Defence manufacturers with limited R&D funds to cooperate.

You know it could depend on how you look at it. Turn your argument around.

The benefit of the JSF is that European countries can get a stealthy latest generation fighter by getting the US to pay for 90% of the development. Instead Europe can invest the money in Airbus, which creates jobs, promotes advanced commercial aviation technology, and supports the European commercial aircraft industry.

European Lawndarts were both built by Lockheed, SABCA (in Belgium, for Belgian and Norwegian F-16s), Fokker (in the Netherlands, for the Klu, Denmark and one machine to Egypt). Turkish and part of the Egyptians were indeed assembled by TAI, while South Korea actually has a full production license.

And the An-124 never had a chance for the US, no matter the time the Iron Curtain fell. Remember that back in the 1980s there was still a follow-on order of Galaxies coming off the assembly line, while the C-17 was already under development back then. Never mind the fact that the C-17 suffered from an extremely protracted development, which started back in the 1970s (the C-17 is essentially an upsized YC-15).

I make the points and Aurthur sharpens them up.

    Thanks, Arthur.

In answer to your second question:
T-45 Goshawk (Based on BAe Hawk)
    kc-330 (proposed Airbus strategic tanker)
F-35B (Verticle lift fan designed by Rolls-Royce
Fox Piranah NBC vehicle (German design)

    And these;
M1 Main Battle tank (Chobam armour British, I believe many other components are foreign as well)
    Bradley Armoured Vehicle
    M113 Apc
M249 Paladin (all made by BAe owned United Defence)

You make my point beautifully. If it meets US needs, the US will buy it.

Build what the US wants. You don’t squish a Rafale into JSF mold and call it a suitable replacement.

The European signitories to the JSF program all understand that they can’t build a JSF themselves and that if they want a stealthy F-16 replacement, their only true choice is the join the JSF program.

Europe does not have the will build a JSF competitor. Nothing proposed or in production today in Europe will do what the F-35 promises to do.

    A380

The A380 may be large, but it’s no strategic airlifter.

The Russian heavy lifters were too late to the party. The Berlin wall had to come down a lot sooner for them to make the C-17 bid process.

A MADE IN TEXAS helo isn’t a european one.
European AF use hundreds of made in USA F-16, why the opposite isn’t true ?

European F-16s were built in Europe. by SABCA. Turkish and some Egyptian were built by TAI. The South Koreans are also assembling F-16s.

And why not a Rafale instead of Superhornet ?

Because it took so long to get into service. It’s built to French needs.

The radar is French. The missiles and munitions are French.

The wings don’t even fold on the Rafale.

What does the Rafale offer that fits into the USN? Nothing. There’s absolutely no reason for the USN to adopt it. That’s my point. It offers no benefit to buy a Rafale.

Yeah, right. Several european countries will buy 100% MADE IN USA F-35.
How many important american programs has used totally made in europe systems ?
Look at the competition about Marines One, it’s two american chopper.

The new Marine One will be an EH101 built in the US by LockheedMartin

If you’re going to try and sell military hardware to the US, the biggest buyer of military hardware in the world, you’re going to have to make what they want.

Is the Eurofighter built to US requirements? Is the Rafale? Is there a stealthy air superiority fighter like the F/A-22 that the US can buy? Is there a European country that builds a strategic airlifter like the C-17? No, of course not. They are built for the rquirements of European countries. If you want the US to even dream about buying European, they have to make what the US military want.

What do european countries make that meets US military needs?

M249 Squad Automatic Weapon – FN
    M9 automatic pistol – Baretta
Stryker armored vehicles – based on the MOWAG Pirana (Swiss?)
