I would have thought perhaps a greater chance of Ferrovial disposing of ABZ, as it is a lot smaller than the others.

Few years ago I would have been overjoyed at BAA selling off ABZ, but now they’ve announced the expansion plan, can’t help wondering if the timing of all this (being selfish!) is all wrong in terms of expansion.

Can only wait & see I guess.

My understanding is that it is illegal to listen into such broadcasts (aviation, police, fire, etc) on a scanner, but authorities tend to turn a blind eye unless they know that the information gleaned on said scanner is broadcast to others (eg. listening in to an aviation incident, or finding out where police units are if a crime is to be committed, thus the information illegally gained is “to your advantage”). Of course “turning a blind eye” includes airshows, where people listen in quite happily to the action. And it varies from country to country, sometimes airport to airport. The Law seems clear but the interpretation of it is a tangled web!!

Anyway, re BAA, I heard on radio that Ferrovial or whoever takes over BAA are “tied in” to any development plans already announced by BAA.

Wish all those UK airlines mentioned were still going of their own accord.

Of course BA “took good care” of B-Cal & Danair didn’t they?

Recall Air Europe went bust, but what became of Orion? I seem to think they were absorbed into Britannia for some reason, probably totally wrong.

Just think if all those independents were still in their pomp, perhaps Ryanair would still have been flying Rombac 1-11s!!!

If I’m honest, I hope they don’t pick AGP, as it would put them in direct competition with MON who currently fly AGP-ABZ.

Don’t think route could support 2 operators, unless GSM are confident of usurping MON.

Newsletter from Flyglobspan confirms 1 737-7 at ABZ for S07.

Still negotiating landing slots with the various airports they wish to serve from ABZ.

However they mention the Med & Cyprus would be within reach from ABZ with the new a/c.

As an ABZ regular, I can confirm that there has been a sharp upturn in the North Sea & UKCS in general, especially over the last 12 months.

All 3 helicopter companies (Bristow, CHC Scotia & Bond) are a lot busier & all have been training extensively, presumably in an effort to get more potential pilots on line.

The very high price of the black stuff has seen activity increase sharply, in a province which many thought was in terminal decline. (Actually the North Sea IS in decline, now in its mature phase, but many smaller independent companies especially are exploring blocks that the majors have ignored or given up, & it is mainly this that is causing the increase in demand for rotary transport).

As far as Bristow are concerned, perhaps they shouldn’t have sold 5 AS332Ls to the German Border Guard (as did CHC Scotia). As a result, they no longer have sufficient spare capacity to deal with the increased demand. Other units have been transferred away from the North Sea to other oil provinces to be based, as they were thought to be “where the work was” when the North Sea went into apparent terminal decline during the last oil price low.

Bristow also blame previous “short-term” thinking among the oil companies, who in the past were too ready to cut contracts & jobs when times were tough. Now times are good, and they require to send more people offshore, they are finding capacity previously there is no longer available.

Do I hear chickens coming home to roost?

Report I looked at says 2, but I suppose as it’s my local rag you can’t trust everything you read in the press!

Although it does quote Tam Dalrymple directly, and report says the 2 a/c will be delivered next spring.

Definitely says one of these a/c (or THE a/c if it is only the one) will be ABZ based.

Airline purchasing 2 B737-700s (modified) one of which will be ABZ based for S07.

Routes to be announced “in the coming weeks”.

Work “90%” done, remaining 10% is getting the suitable slots for the destinations they are looking at.

Anything from 7 to 14 weekly flights envisaged.

Wonder what the mods are (winglets perhaps???)

In the regional jet market, not exactly a lot of choice (if you’re looking for new planes).

More or less Embraer v Bombardier, & my money’s on the former.

CAn’t see Fokker (or Rekkof as they are called now) returning – lots of talk about it, nothing concrete.

Tom, BY738 has the answer re ABZ.

RYR 738s can fly out of ABZ happily presently, but as long as it’s to DUB (& soon LPL) & they are not filled so that they can take off from the runway!
Any destinations further away, they would need a longer runway.Hopefully that will be addressed by the time Oct comes around when LPL starts. RYR engines on their 738s are not as powerful as, say BAL (as was). Can recall BAL 738s flying to IBZ from ABZ non-stop.

Similarly, GSM 736s engines will not be powerful enough to take off from ABZ on its current runway length with a full load & fly to the destinations they want to (which I assume would be “bucket & spade” flights). Hence no announcements & no flights for 2006.

Personally a few years ago I wouldn’t have believed it either, as BAA were not particularly interested in ABZ. They would have been happier trunking passengers via London (just my opinion, you can disagree if you wish).

However now, I really do think something may be in the “pipeline” & the BAA are certainly now promoting ABZ.

Much work to do (runway extension, more a/c stands, expand terminal) but I think COA are interested in doing IAH-ABZ.

If it happens, I would imagine it would be a 752.

International traffic is certainly on the rise out of here, Apr 2006 v Apr 2005 apparently shows a 27.2% increase in travellers, a record Apr overall for ABZ.

Yes, it is mainly oil-generated, but if not here, then somewhere else would have benefited from the oil boom. I guess in some way, the energy industry will always play a part at Dyce.

I saw the programme Air Crash Investigation on satellite TV yesterday, focusing on this very incident.

Indeed Boeing’s repair of the initial tailscrape incident was at fault.

Was a very realistic depiction of the tragedy in 1985.

However Japanair obviously feel their staff today (new generation) have become complacent, and need to be reminded of what could happen if standards slip.
