I’m sure he does, but as the image proves the second DIRCM turret is not new, having been first seen on 055 almost 3 years ago.

    DIRCM?

I thought that was part of the EOT System

Well i got an Airbus friend working in China with fairly good contacts with PLAAF officers, he also states these are rumours, but seems to trust them.

    😮

I wonder how/why an airbus employee would have contacts with PLAAF officers?
Did the PLAAF officers maybe indicate to them that these rumours are maybe credible or if he’s making that judgement by himself (if he’s an experienced PLA watcher he could definitely make the latter judgement with some confidence).

But yeah, my own assessment is that these are rumours that we should treat with skepticism, but the claims themselves are not that unbelieveable at all, especially looking at how F-22s performed in early exercises against the USAF’s 4th gens.

He may be talking about Henri Kehnmann (aka Henri K. owner of eastpendulum.com). He is an airbus engineer who had worked in China and seem to have some good contacts within some companies especially the civil aviation ones. How much contacts he has with the military side as well as the PLAAF is unknown, but he does seem to have some personal contacts from the military side too. He one of the best China watchers in the west.

I must make it clear again, the whole J-20 confrontation results are rumors of varying of believability. What we know for sure is that 2x J-20 are participating in the Red Sword exercises 2016, including aggressor roles.

Let’s begin from the first step: J-20 shot down AWACS first, so would it imply they are actualy able to carry long range AAMs?

Yes they would have been simulating BVR and WVR weapons. The J-20 is designed to carry several medium to long-ranged AAM. The primary BVR weapon is the PL-12G and possible ramjet versions (PL-21?) in the future. PL-12G is like the Chinese equivalent to the AIM-120D. At least 4x can be carried in the main weapons bay. Weapons integration tests for the PL-10 and PL-12G had started in 2013.

so today, news reports say China did live drills off the coast of South Korea which include live firing tests from its carrier aircraft. in protest to Trump.

anyone know what kind of loads the su-33s were using?

    Are you referring to this?

could you give more background about this exercise and what happened?

    DISCLAIMER: there are rumors

The 2x J-20 had been the aggressors (blue force). During one engagement, the red force had been comprised of AWACS, J-10, J-11, Su-30. There is some confusion here, whether they were J-11/Su-30 or J-16. But the J-10 were at least J-10B, possibly even J-10C. Both KJ-200 and KJ-2000 were part of the exercise but not clear which one was used during that engagements with the J-20. Anyway, at the very early stages of the confrontations, one of the J-20 takes out the AWACS. Once the AWACS was gone J-10s and flankers were completely lost. They were totally unable to locate the J-20. Not clear whether the AWACS itself detected the J-20. All of the Red-force were taken-out by the 2x J-20. It seem even in WVR J-10s and flankers RADARs were unable detect the J-20. There were also rumors about complete confusion between the Red-forces and their ground-control units once the AWACSs were gone. Essentially they were fighting ghosts. And according to more rumors, since things are extremely one-sided, they are planning the bring in counter-stealth assets to even the odds (Probably RADARs JY-50 and systems like DWL001/DWL002).

So even IF part of this is true, yes, the J-20 has made nice handsome debut but it also shows even with AWACS support, how poorly earlier gen fighters like the J-10, J-11 will fare against 5th gen fighters like the F-22 and F-35. If the engagements involved the KJ-2000 with multiple J-10C and they were unable detect the J-20, that is extremely worrisome. J-10C, KJ-2000, KJ-500 are some of the most advanced assets in the PLAAF.

    Red Sword 2016 line-up:

Lot of rumors flying around regarding the exercise. While PLAAF is very happy with the J-20, they’ve got a rude shock how ineffective J-10 + J-11 + AWACS combo were. If specific engagements involving the J-20 were against the the KJ-2000 and J-10 version was the J-10B/C then that is very worrisome. Barring the J-20, that is pretty much the best the PLAAF has and it had not taken the the 2x J-20 too long to finish them-off.

off the top of my head

    1. J-10 is the same size as the F-16 because of some guy’s ability to use photoshop. disagreed he called you racist
    2. plasma stealth is the future and superior to physical stealth
    3. 787 was named with respect to Chinese culture. 8 being an important number. it had nothing to do with boeing’s numbering scheme
    4. FC-1 exports, should be by 20 countries by the claims of some
    5. Typhoon will have aesa and meteor by 2010

I’ve been hearing this since the mid-90’s. How plasma-stealth based MiG-1.42 is the going to be the Raptor-Killer. The F-22 and ‘American-Stealth’ will be rendered useless. The fanboi claims of the MiG.-1.42 back in the 90’s deserve a special Nobel prize for creativity.
