No Adrian afraid i am just doing someone a favour:D
Steve.
Cheers Alan.
That’s a good reference point.

Just out of interest, even if it was a side cap badge would there be a reason for it to be in the aircraft in the first place?
Steve
Andy.
The fixings on the back are missing but it appears that there were two fixing points that were soldered on. I do not believe it is actually silver, there are no hall marks.
Steve
I have a complete one, in good working order if that would help?

About a year ago someone posted a complete set of London County Council bomb damage maps on flickr. They were great and not only showed the damage to individual properties in london but also showed the exact impact points of all the V1 and V2’s. Unfortuantly the person who posted them was ordered to take them off the site or face prosecution under copyright laws. (I believe these may now be available in a book)

A couple of months ago i noticed that one of the dispersal areas of a local ww2 airfield had been ploughed. (Probably the first time since closing in 1946). As a footpath passes through the area i decide to have a little look. The first thing i came across was this.
The S* relates to the material the case is made of (in this case brass)
The single no is a batch no.
The P no’s are the manufactures codes in your case.
P120 = Dynamit A.G Vormals, Alfred Nobel & co Werk Hannover
P154 = Polte Armanturen u. Maschinenfabrik A.G Werk Gruneberg, Nordbahn Schlesien.

Thanks for this interesting thread. I live very near to little walden but was unaware that this was the location. I was led to believe that the he177 crashed nearer to Ashdon at Butlers farm. Would this be the same location ( its not that far as the crow flies). Any way if you need any help with photos etc i would be more han willing.
Steve
looks as though i should have got into this 20 or 30 years ago. Any idea of the location of the P51 accident?? Also what has happened to all of these A/C.
Cheyne’s death certificate appears identical to Flemings. Incidently what was the home address of Fleming, when doing some research a while ago i seem to recall that they were from the same town in New Zealand.
Also Adrian i noticed you said your father witnessed the accident. I don’t suppose he has ever mentioned a P51 diving onto the ground close to Great Sampford Feb 1945. Apparently on the 04/02/1945 P51-D 44-15531 dived into the ground nr Great Sampford, killing pilot Alvin Wallace.
Cheers
Steve
Got the death cert for Cheyne today and as someone has already mentioned, place of death is given Great Sampford road. Which is pretty much generalised area.
Steve.
Also, I take it that the other Hurricane is still un disturbed, any one know the exact location of this site.
I would agree that the engine was smashed judging by the pieces i have found on the surface.
Thats great.
When i spoke to the farmer, he told me that on the first dig human remains were found and the local police were called in to deal with it. The dig was then stopped. The second dig then took place a year or so later.
If this is correct surley the police would have been able to discover who the remains belonged to, and if so what would have happened to them?
I am very interested that there is a dvd on the dig, was it actually filmed or is it a series of photo’s.
Steve.
