Was the C-series killed, then brought back only to be killed again?

I have heard such things, but I am not sure what the current status is – currently killed or surrently brought back?

didn’t know we were talking about take offs. Doesn’t matter though. lets say that by some chance air temp at some particular airfield at 14000 is 40 deg below zero celsius. (below 40 something fahrenheit) air density would be around 0.9 kg/m3.

Now if we take some arfield at 0 feet at 50 degrees celsius (around 120 F), air density would be around 1.1 kg/m3. Still higher.

In conclusion, it would be almost impossible to have weather conditions that would make a high and cold take off better than low and hot. If by some miracle temperatures do drop to more-than-arctic values that’d provide you with nice air density, i doubt one could even start the plane in the first place.

Which actually happens. You don´t have runways there, but you do have snow for skis.

The South Pole is slightly over 9000 feet above sea level. It is said to be 50 years ago that a first ski-equipped plane landed there – in summer. There has never been over -15 Celsius or so observed on the South Pole – typical polar summer day temperatures are -20, -30 Celsius range.

In winter, the absolute minimum is -78,9 Celsius.

Vostok camp is not on South Pole, but it is higher on the ice dome at about 11 500 feet and farther from sea, so it is colder year-round. Summer maximum -22 Celsius. Winter minimum observed -89,2: the minimum ever observed anywhere on surface of Earth. This does not mean it is the coldest place on Earth… for example, the summit of the ice dome is just over 13 000 feet, but there is no camp there and the camps in Antarctic interior are not very many, so not sure what exactly is the coldest place.

Anyway, -89,2 is record, but -70-s and low -80s are common polar night weather. And an important point is that it is impossible to reach Vostok by air in winter. The reason is said to be not that engines would not start, but that the snow is too soft and thick in winter and would not allow ski planes to reach takeoff speeds.

Air density IS all that matters. However, since air density depends on temperature and pressure, then those two certainly are quite important.

Low and high are relative terms, but lets say we’re talking about 10 000 feet and 30 000 feet. Difference in air density for those two is so huge that no local temperature difference can influence it. With certainty, air density will always be much lower at ‘high and cold’ than at ‘low and hot’, as the possible high and low values of hot-cold are much closer together than possible altitude values.

Well, while there is some terrain at 29 000 feet, no runways I know of. The highest runways are in the region of 14 000 feet.

But yes, the highest runways are not simultaneously the coldest… the coldest runways are near sea level.

Their international arm goes online in 2007/8.

They have no right to do so before 2010. Which means that they must find a profirable way to operate A340-500 inside India…

Crikey… the order hasn’t even gone through yet! Give it some time before asking such details

Mayrhuber already says that “in the emphasis mine Lufthansa configuration, the plane will be capable of carrying around 400 passengers”

What is the Lufthansa configuration supposed to mean? There are 4 different Lufthansa configurations for exact same 747-400 frame… which are capable of carrying 390, 368, 351 and 330 passengers. So, what does stating around 400 passengers tell about Lufthansa or 747-800?

    Seatmap?

What is the Lufthansa 747-800 seatmap like?

The curent 747-400 seatmaps all agree in that:

First is on upper deck, 16 seats

    Nosecone is Business.

The old maindeck accommodation versions are 64C/310Y, 78C/274Y and 99C/234Y. New is 80C/234Y… total 330 seats.

    With old C, 14 C can replace 36 Y, then 21 more C replace 40 Y. New C having same shoulder room but more pitch replaces 99 C with 80 C.

So… Where does Lufthansa put 70 seats in 747-800?

Upper deck 4 m stretch – since LH F pitch is 2,3 m, this is slightly not enough to add 2 rows…

    Lower deck 5,5 m stretch.
And galleys removed to attic… Do the attic galleys need service doors?

    Pitch

What is the window pitch of E-jets? And what is the RJ seat pitch?

Airbus have only 30 or so years experience. Far far short of the nigh on 100 Boeing have!

So no, they do not have the same ammoutn of experience. Sure, a lot of the groups that merged to create Airbus have long and impressive histories, but little of those original companies exists anymore.

Well, how much of the Boeing that built Boeing Model 1 (a seaplane BTW) about 90 years ago still exists?

Not Boeing…. Boeing of Boeing was thrown out of his firm even in his lifetime.

How is that possible? The 747 is a 10 abreast aircraft ? The XWB is narrower then the T-7 (which is used by some airlines in 12 abreast configuration) by around 9-10 inches.

Er, name airline that uses ANY aircraft 12 abreast? Aalto Air and their E-474, but even they do not do this with 777.

As for 10 abreast, not only is 777 a 10 abreast at 619 cm width (Emirates, Air France, …), but so is DC-10/MD-11 at 602 cm width (Finnair etc.) as well as Tristar at 597 cm.

Is Airbus 350 wide enough for 10 abreast? It seems to have width close to that of Tristar…

The first flight for the 787 is still schedules and nothing has been bumped up or down . Boeing has reported concerns but nothing at the moment warrants a delay .

When was A380 first flight delayed from March 2005 to 27th of April?

If everything stays as it is then the first flight will be in august 2007 . Boeing has a pretty darn good record of Dealing with aircraft projects in the recent past (just look at the 737NG family and the 777 Family) so They go into the 787 having a good record.

What was the Airbus record before the A380 delays? How did A330/A304 family do?

With nigh on 100 years history and experience, I think Boeing have a better grasp on whats possible in the designing, construction and testing of an aircraft than you do 😉

    Sure. So does Airbus.

When was Airbus 380 supposed to be delivered as of July 2004 (8 months before the supposed date of first flight in March 2005, even as now is 8 months before the supposed first flight of 787 in August 2007)? Was it already May 2006, or was it still March 2006?

Yep Mytravel, Monarch, Thomas Cook and a few others all have 9 abreast in economy on their A330’s.

    And for the size, see:
    http://www.content.airbusworld.com/SITES/Technical_Data/docs/AC/DATA_CONSULT/AC_A330.pdf
    page 30.

Aisles 16,5 inches like MD-11. Airbus, unlike MD, does not disclose seat width, but MD offers 57,5 inches for a three-seat block and Airbus only offers 57,1 inches for 3-seat block. So, a 9 abreast A-330 is more cramped than 10 abreast MD-11.

    How about 8-abreast B-767?

9 Abreast A330? I dont think the A330 can genuinly go 9 abreast ! Is there a carrier that flies 9 abreast A330?

The A340-600 has an incredible range with a normal passenger fit. I wonder what it is with a (possibly) lighter exec fit?

    See
    http://www.content.airbusworld.com/SITES/Technical_Data/docs/AC/DATA_CONSULT/AC_A340-500-600.pdf
    page 54.

I also wonder if they have fitted more fuel tanks in the freight bays? What would it’s range be then?

Can the MTOW line be extrapolated down through the fuel volume limited part?
