Adrian I forgot to mention we have parts of both the Bf109’s shot down at Headcorn in the museum
Adrian wait until you see what we have this year! As well as 2 BBMF Spitfires & 2 Hurricanes for the Battle of Britain show on the 11th July we also have a further 2 Spitfires & 2 Hurricanes as well as 2 Buchons, 2 Harvards, 3 Tiger Moths a Jackaroo & a Storch.
For the Combined Ops on the 15th & 16th August we have the BBMF (Spitfire/Hurricane/ Lancaster) & Aero Legends fleet both days On Saturday 15th we have the Great War Combat Team, The Gnat Display Team & the VULCAN. On Sunday 16th we have a full display by the Red Arrows
Nothing has changed since my last post! They will not be going to the US the only option offered by the NMUSAF is scraping despite several offers to take them to other museums across europe
Do they know where the light switch is?
When the F100 was delivered to Lashenden it arrived on 3 RAF Queen Mary’s fuselage on one, wings on another tail feathers etc. & a compressor on the third!
Project-9699,
You can try contacting the NMUSAF several other museums have tried, but as I understand it the NMUSAF will now only loan items to national museums with any non national museum being allowed to continue the loans they already have. No new non national museums will be loaned items (I’m sure Twin Otter will correct me if I am wrong).
Sadsack With regards to the cockpit of the F100 it has a broken canopy & other damage from the accident. The final decision as to whether any parts of the F100 or Mystere can be salvaged for future use rests solely with the owners of the aircraft the NMUSAF not the Lashenden Air Warfare Museum who would be quite happy to strip both aircraft of anything useful to the wider preservation movment
Sabrejet & David
The F100 was badly damaged by a Turbo Beaver that failed to take off in 2007 & the NMUSAF decided that it would be scraped, they have allowed other museums to strip spares from the F100 to help other restorations. There are several other museums interested in spares when the F100 is scraped subject to the approval of the NMUSAF.
The loan of F100, T33 & Mystere airframes to UK museums was a simple answer as to what to do with them (the original idea to donate them was killed off by the UK government & their tax demands). Unfortunately the NMUSAF made very few checks on the groups wishing to take on the aircraft. Neither of the aircraft at Lashenden were acquired by the museum, the F100 was acquired by the Malling Aircraft Archaeologists & the Mystere was acquired by the Robertsbridge Aviation Society. Both groups requested a home for the aircraft at Lashenden on the understanding that they would look after them. Unfortunately the Malling group was wound up & Roberstbridge had a change in collecting policy leaving Lashenden with the airframes.
The Lashenden Air Warfare Museum is putting its money into preserving its own aircraft The Fa 330 is in the early stages of its restoration by the museum & the very rare Fieseler Fi103R-4 Reichenberg is in store following its 5 year Restoration in Germany ready to be displayed in the new museum building that is under construction. The trustees of the museum have not spent the museums money on aircraft that do not belong to them, that they did not acquire & certainly did not want.
We are finally getting somewhere with the NMUSAF all they have to do is check their records to see if it still has any explosive devices fitted then it can be scrapped along with the Mystere according to the museums director (neither aircraft were acquired by the Lashenden Air Warfare Museum both aircraft having been acquired by third parties). The F100 & the Mystere have not been on loan to the museum since March 2007. Below is the latest Email from the NMUSAF
Dear Mr Matthews,
Thank you for sending me your letter of 11 Feb 2015, with the detailed background information on the F-100F and the Mystere IV at your museum, and for bringing this to my attention.
You are correct in that it has taken far too long to resolve this issue.
We thought we had two fundamental matters to resolve before authorizing you to proceed with scrapping the aircraft. The first matter is whether either aircraft has any components that include radioactive material. It turns out that we have paperwork indicating that both aircraft are free of radioactive material. The second matter is the question of whether either aircraft has any remaining explosive components that for example might have been part of the ejection system or the weapon release system. We have looked over the past couple days and as of this moment we do not have evidence of whether these aircraft were previously checked for explosive components.
We will keep you up to date on what we find, if anything else, on the status of explosive components in these two aircraft.
Am sorry this has taken so very long.
One way or another we will get this remaining issue corrected so that you are able to move forward and scrap the two jets.
I have copied on this email our Chief of Collections, Ms Krista Strider; our Chief of Restoration, Mr Roger Deere; and our Chief of Management Support, Ms Katherine Cox.
